News:: The Nintendo PlayStation can finally play CD games

It was no small feat when Terry and Dan Diebold got their hands on a prototype of the fabled Nintendo PlayStation, but there has always been a catch to it: its signature feature, the CD drive, couldn't actually play games. Even a load of repair work barely got the drive to turn on. Well, the end is finally in sight. Professional tinkerer Ben Heckendorn (aka Ben Heck) has managed to get the CD drive working, including games. The solution, as he explains, involved replacing some "questionable" capacitors and "jiggling some things around" -- he was caught off-guard when things started working. The biggest challenge now is finding games to use with the near-mythological system.

News:: With just a few Injustice 2 DLC character slots left, one of them better be Sandman

On Monday, the day every week I unleash these questions on the Destructoid staff, I posited there was no way Ed Boon and Netherrealm would reveal all the DLC characters for Injustice 2. “Surely,” I told myself “surely they would wait until the week of launch or after it was on store shelves.” That thought became my security blanket for the week after I asked the staff to name DC characters they want to be included in the season pass.

Then Thursday happened and my heart sank as it was confirmed characters would be revealed on Friday. I worried this would be my first week since I started this feature that I would fail to have a post ready.

Imagine my relief then when only a few of the characters were announced. Starfire, Red Hood, and (boring) Sub-Zero are there, as well as Black Manta and (boring) Raiden based on their obvious silhouettes. So that’s five of the 9 characters, leaving us with just four more. Four characters I hope to God are not from Mortal Kombat. I don’t know who they are, and some people have probably already figured out their identities, but I do know one of them should be Sandman.

Sorry Neil Gaiman but I’m talking the OG Sandman. Debuting in 1939, Wesley Dodd’s Sandman was part of the dark, pulp golden era of comic books. He wore a green suit, fedora, and a gas mask like a child straight out of The Doctor Dances. Like Batman, he was a skilled detective, could handle himself in a fight and didn’t believe in killing his villains, opting to gas them to sleep. He's basically like Bill Cosby if Bill Cosby was a good guy.

Armed with a gas gun and tiny gas capsules, he would make for an excellent status effect fighter, putting his opponents to sleep or paralyzing them. If his occasionally used wire-gun is included, Sandman's combat repertoire would grow even greater, creating someone far more interesting than Cheetah looks.

Mostly, I just want as many people as possible to learn about Sandman. In the same way Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & 3DS reintroduced the Duck Hunt Dog character to gamers, it’s time comic book geeks reacquaint themselves with Sandman.

News:: Overkill's Walking Dead game suffers another delay

If you've been eager to get your hands on Overkill's The Walking Dead, then I'm sorry to disappoint you. Originally intended to release in 2016, Overkill's take on the franchise is now being pushed back to the second half of 2018. Much like the walkers on the show, this game is taking its time arriving.

Starbreeze Studios (owners of Overkill) announced this decision via their official website (translated by VG 24/7). They stated their intention for delaying the game was for the product to "reach its full potential". Its becoming increasingly odd for big publishers to not rush games out to market, but I can dig it.

If you're still curious about the game, Starbreeze will be hosting a livestream event on May 10 to provide some insight into the development of the title, among a few others. Hopefully the game ends up good, because the last Walking Dead shooter we got was just dreadful.

News:: PREPARE TO FRIENDSHIP: Dtoid's Master Gaming Contact List

[This was a surprisingly eventful week for friendship. Even after all this time, there's still so much to add! The List will be updated into perpetuity -Panda]

Good morning/afteroon/tomorrow, my friends/robots/Gardevoir

It has been made aware to me that, just perhaps, you all enjoy video games. It might even be said that you... like to game with others? Now now, don't be that way, I don't mean to lump you into some sort of box. You're all just such lovely folks, it pains me to watch you, struggling in vain to connect with each other, striving to engage in...

News:: Japan: Watch birds shit on a man, Hadouken a pigeon

Last week, Kotaku East ran a hyper-sensory commercial that I haven't been able to get out of my head. It's for a bird removal company. There's a very brief Street Fighter sequence, and then it only gets more intense from there. After enduring the whole thing I went down a very strange rabbit hole of music videos that range from grotesque to fascinating, two more of which I'll share with you below. If you're into this sort of thing the Youtube account GalTV is a great place to force your friends to visit this weekend.

What you're about to see might be disturbing in the best way possible.

News:: Ben Heck's Mini Pinball kit: Selecting a microcontroller

As the development of the Mini Pinball kit progresses, Ben and Felix split their focus between different areas of the build. Ben is finalizing the design of the flippers and how they're controlled, while solenoids are being used to give the power required to blast the metal ball up the table. Thanks to a technique called pulse-width modulation (PWM) from the Arduino software, we can make sure the device isn't powered all the time. Felix isn't having an easy go of it with the Teensy 3.6: After switching out the I2S audio circuit, so he's now using a digital-to-analogue Converter (DAC), and the SD card Arduino libraries meanwhile aren't making the right noises. Do you have experience with SD cards and Arduino? What would you like to see in the Mini Pinball kit? Let us know over on the element14 Community.

News:: Free on weekends? We're looking for some contributors

Destructoid is looking for a few extra hands to help us with the smaller indie stories we might have missed during the crazy weekday news rush, and with the onslaught that is E3 next month. To apply simply send me a link to stuff you're written in the past (on Destructoid) and we'll try to get a few of you sorted.  I'm not looking for resumes -- I only want to hand the keys to people who are already using our community blogs.  Hit me up!  Please specify if you're looking to write for Destructoid, Japanator, Tomopop, or Flixist (or more than one).

To apply please email me directly at: niero [atto] destructoid [desuuuu]

Please only apply if you enjoy doing this sort of thing for fun on weekends, as I'm not hiring at the moment, but when I have hired full-time writers in the past it's always promoting from within in order of seniority. If you're looking for a paying writing gig asap it's best you launch your own thing and send me a thousand questions at the same email if you need advice on how to get started, I love helping people do that. As for Destructoid, we've been talking about doing a Patreon to expand our payroll to more writers from reader donations, so look for that soon. Until then Destructoid runs on the steam of our collective farts and youthful photos of Keanu.
