News::Titanfall engineer on using the Xbox Live Cloud

Microsoft has been pushing the "infinite power of the cloud" hard with its Xbox One, perhaps partially to make up for the technological advantage held by Sony's PS4 specs, or maybe just for the sake of buzzwords. If they repeat the "infinite power of the cloud" enough times, maybe it will stick. Still, talking about the practicality and actuality of the Xbox Live Cloud is Jon Shiring of Respawn, the team behind Titanfall (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC).

Shiring first gives a nice, layman-friendly explanation of the benefits of having dedicated servers -- in short, a less frustrating and less inconsistent multiplayer experience -- and then explains the "Xbox Live Cloud" as "a system for running dedicated servers." One thing to note is that Titanfall on PC and Xbox 360 will use these dedicated servers, so an Xbox One is not a requirement. Shiring noted that "Microsoft priced it so that it’s far more affordable than other hosting options," which hopefully means more games will be able to take advantage of the dedicated servers.

There's been blow back against Microsoft touting its cloud; developer Jonathan Blow (Braid, The Witness) went so far as to call the company's claims outright lies. Meanwhile, Eurogamer has an extensive, informed evaluation of Microsoft's cloud that likens most of the company's claims to PR and marketing hand waving. The use of dedicated servers facilitated by the cloud does seem like one of the first concrete, legitimate uses of the service. Plus, it's nice to know Titanfall will still reap its benefits on PC, right? Or has the DRM reversal encouraged any of you to early adopt the Xbox One?

News::The Chaos Engine is coming back with a 'restoration'

My first reaction to this annoyingly teaserish trailer for The Chaos Engine was, "Holy eff! They're remaking The Chaos Engine!" That is not quite what's happening here -- this is a "restoration" of the classic top-down co-op title (also known as Soldiers of Fortune), reports Digital Spy -- but that's not a name you hear frequently mentioned and I'm still excited nonetheless.

"We've seen dozens of terrible remakes of classic games," explained producer Neil McKenna at Rezzed. "When we sat down and looked at it, it didn't even need that. The gameplay, even though it is old-fashioned, it just works really well. You just need to add anything in."

This tweaked version does have some updates: namely, "a bit of gloss" for larger monitors, 16-directional controls, and a "less brutal" save system. These visual and control changes can be switched off and drop-in, drop-out cooperative play is, I'm happy to say, making the cut.

The Chaos Engine is already up for pre-order on Get Games Go. The site lists it as having a $9.99 Steam release (Windows, Mac, and Linux) planned for August of this year. Talk about completely unexpected, awesome news.

News::Pre-ordering Gran Turismo 6 means in-game money or cars

Polyphony Digital is going a step further with pre-order bonuses for Gran Turismo 6, as detailed on the PlayStation Blog. It's not all retailer-exclusive, thank goodness:

  • BMW Z4 GT3 '11

  • Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 '13

  • Tesla Model S Signature Performance '13

  • Chevrolet Corvette Stingray (C7) '14

But, yes, there's plenty of that as well with GameStop offering 16 extra vehicles (full list below) and other goodies including the Beyond the Apex II app. This 15th Anniversary Edition Upgrade is faster than individually unlocking the featured cars, which also happen to be present on-disc. On that note, Amazon's bonus for pre-ordering is literally $1 million in GT6 credits.

News::Bungie Talks Destiny Networking, Loot and Customisation, Community, Vehicles and More - AusGamers

AusGamers recently spoke with Bungie engineering lead, Chris Butcher, about various Destiny-related topics, including just how networking and matchmaking work without an active UI, weapons, upgrades and customisation, loot and trading, vehicles and getting around the game-world, how they plan to foster the Destiny community and much, much more. From the interview: "...That helps you get around the larger areas, and if youve seen the Law of the Jungle trailer, theres a different kind of vehicle. That was one of The Fallen vehicles called the Pike, that we were showing off there. So there are other vehicles, both enemy vehicles and player vehicles. News::Allow K.K. and Friends to touch your musical soul

Ladies and gentlemen, I am playing Animal Crossing for the first time ever. I scored a copy of New Leaf, popped it into my 3DS, and immediately fell deep into Tom Nook's financial pit of despair. I can tell this game is going to take me places.

Speaking of going places, it appears that the canine guitar virtuoso K.K. Slider has partnered up with game music remixers Benjamin Briggs and Nathan "ectogemia" Becker to form a super group, K.K. and Friends! And wouldn't you know it, their first album has just been released!

The nine-track remix album covers various tunes from the original Animal Crossing, Wild World, and City Folk. You can download it from GameChops or Loudr for $7, or you can spend an extra $0.99 for the privilege of downloading it from iTunes (silly Apple tax).

News::Titanfall And Relatable Sci-Fi

Game Informer - One of the questions we had for Respawn was why the studio wanted to go down the sci-fi route with Titanfall. The reason came down to simple pragmatism. Theres only so far you can go if youre portraying [a conventional] military, says game director Steve Fukuda. A big part of it is if you want a guy to be able to leap buildings in a single bound or we want people to be able to cloak if you want people to be able to do exotic things and have somewhat outlandish things happen, it makes it easier if you can sort of explain it away or you have a mechanism for doing that, and sci-fi served that purpose.

As you've already heard, WayForward is helming another pair of Cartoon Network games. There is Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON'T KNOW!, a follow-up to last year's Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?! , slated for 3DS, Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. In addition, there is Regular Show: Mordecai and Rigby in 8-Bit Land, a 3DS-exclusive adaptation of the exploits of everyone's favorite park-dwelling slackers.

Nintendo Everything has scooped up Wii U and 3DS box art images of the Fall-bound cartoon romps. Those are things you can look at with the eyeballs in your skull.

I'm especially excited to see how Adventure Time will be tailored to home consoles. Part of me wishes for high-quality 2D animation, while another part hopes it adopts the polygonal look of the episode "A Glitch is a Glitch." As for Regular Show, I just want a Double Dragon level in which you use Death Kwon Do moves.

He was also played by Hugh Jackman in that okay Van Helsing film, but I couldn't help but notice he was missing those hairy sideburns and was sorely lacking adamantium in his hands. Jokes aside, I wasn't sure what to expect from NeocoreGames first attempt at an action RPG. News::Mad Max Preview King of the Wasteland I TheKoalition

Richard Bailey of TheKoalition writes: During Sonys Pre E3 2013 Conference a few weeks ago, Avalanche Studios showed off the first official debut trailer for their upcoming Mad Max reboot.
