News::Eurogamer's 2013 alternative awards

We're trailing towards the end of the year, so it's a time of excess, tubby tummies and endless top ten lists. News::Games with Gold: Sleeping Dogs, Guardian of Light

Before Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider reboot, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light was my go-to game in the franchise. In many ways, this twin-stick co-op shooter still is. It's joining United Front Games' open-world action title Sleeping Dogs in Microsoft's Games with Gold this month.

Gold subscribers will be able to download both games for free, starting with Sleeping Dogs from January 1 - 15, and then Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light from Jan. 16 - 31.

As continues to be the case with these promotions, both are worth downloading -- if you haven't already acquired them in the past either here or on a different platform.

News::The 10 Best Videogames of 2013

Wired: The funny thing about many of the best videogames of the last year -- and we think this trend will continue -- is you didn't see them coming. Sleeper hits, the games that stay off the radar because they aren't part of the game industry's annual jillion-dollar marketing extravaganza, have occasionally popped up in years past -- who could forget the year Katamari Damacy won our hearts with little advance fanfare? There are more and more Katamaris these days thanks to the independent developers who must rely upon post-release word of mouth, not pre-launch hype, to sell their products. Of course, some of the overly hyped triple-A stuff turned out to be pretty great too. After much passionate debate, here's our list of the best games of 2013.

News::The 9 Biggest Gaming Bummers of 2013

Wired: It's been an exciting year for videogames, from the launch of new consoles to the release of many surprisingly good indie games. And we'll talk about that in due time. For now, we're recapping the things that bummed us out about 2013. In years past we've looked at the games that most disappointed us during the previous 12 months, but for the most part, singing out specific titles didn't seem right this year. First off, it's difficult to be truly disappointed by bad games you can smell coming a mile away. Secondly, the most disturbing things this year seemed to us to be general trends, not specific problems. When disappointment comes in waves versus isolated incidents, it's more troubling. But we are nothing if not optimists here at Game|Life. So we'll offer a few silver linings as we run down the biggest bummers of 2013.

ARS: The end of a console cycle is always one of the most exciting times for gaming. While the encroaching Xbox One and PlayStation 4 ate up a lot of media attention throughout the year, veteran developers with years of experience on older hardware proved that there was still some life in the systems that would technically be last generation by years end. Those developers created some of the most epic cinematic gaming ever this year, building on the ambition and false starts of those that came before them to create some of the mediums most memorable experiences.

News::The Walking Dead Season 2 Review: Cinematic Game or Interactive Movie? | Unigamesity

Clementine is now the main character and surviving has never been so tough (or not). Episode one has shown us that the divine has exceptional powers and it can make anything possible, including saving a defenseless child countless times against all odds. This review is obviously a first impression of The Walking Dead Season two, however it seems to me that Telltale is rushing the gold mine and making whatever it takes to keep the game series running. As I said before, I hope the next episodes will introduce something enthusiastic and unexpected; else it will become more than evident that content quality is not one of the main concerns.

News::4 Films Based on Video Games Hitting Cinemas in 2014

As video games often have settings, characters, and plots, they have often become the basis for Hollywood movies. However, a lot of film adaptations of video games have been rated unfavorably and the adaptations often fail at the box office too even when they already have a large number of video game fans waiting out there. Now that 2013 is almost coming to an end, 2P gives a look ahead at the four upcoming film adaptations of video games that will hit cinemas in 2014 and records the release dates. There are more film adaptations of video games coming in the future like Assassin's Creed on August 7, 2015, World of Warcraft on March 11, 2016, Angry Birds on July 1, 2016, Metal Gear Solid, Mass Effect, Temple Run, Gran Turismo etc. Do you think they will do well at the box office?

News::The Edge awards 2013: studio of the year

3. Simogo

Simogo released two games in 2013, both recipients of an Edge 9 – Year Walk and Device 6.

From the wintry chills of Year Walk to the stylish mysteries of Device 6, 2013 has seen this two-man team broaden its range – with the help of some talented collaborators – to become the most exciting creative force on iOS. Dark, enigmatic and playful, these two short stories marry riveting narratives with unorthodox systems and flawless presentation.

2. Naughty Dog

The Last Of Us became the fifteenth Edge 10 when we reviewed the game in June.

The Last Of Us was seen as a stopgap, made by Naughty Dog’s B team to flesh out PS3’s lineup while the Uncharted team did big things for PS4. The Last Of Us, however, was better than any Nathan Drake outing, proving Naughty Dog has no B team and cementing its position not only as the best of Sony’s Worldwide Studios, but as an industry leader.

1. Rockstar North

Rockstar North’s latest open world was worth the wait. Our GTAV review heralded the sixteenth 10 in Edge’s history.

Few studios enjoy the luxury of five years between sequels, and fewer still would be allowed a late delay that pushes a release into a new financial year. But Rockstar North is given free rein because the end product will be worth it. Like GTAs past, GTAV melded best-in-class world, visual and audio design, though this time it had the mechanics to match. It’s the sort of game only possible when a publisher gives enough time and budget to one of the most talented, committed studios in the world.
