News::Check Out This Fan-Made Ocarina of Time 2D Remake

We have seen a lot of fan-made trailers and demos for remakes of classic Zelda titles, over the last couple of years, but not as promising or as ambitious as this one: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2D.

News::Gauntlet Review: I Wish It Was Longer | Technology Tell

From the review, "Gauntlet is amazingly fun. I loved every minute I spent with the game. The action is tight, the level design is excellent, the graphics look fantastic. It is easy to learn and get good at, even if the Wizard takes a concerted effort to master."

News::Rituals Preview: A Story within a Story | Technology Tell

From the preview, "Rituals puts the Unity engine to good use in building its environment, discarding any attempt at realism in favor of a world thats colorfully surreal. The house your character wakes up in has walls covered in colorful tiles decorated with ornate patterns. All the furniture youd expect to find in a well appointed home is present and accounted for, but they exist alongside more esoteric design choices, like giant man-sized gas lanterns that provide light, giant toothbrushes that serve as pillars, and giant teacups that serve no discernible purpose. There are also portraits hanging on walls with living occupants inside them, as well as a room with a wall thats covered in seventeen faucets, none of which actually dispense water."

News::Horror title Noct reaches its Kickstarter funding goal, Greenlit on Steam

Noct, a 2D top-down multiplayer survival horror game that blends arcade combat with RPG survival elements has recently met and exceeded its Kickstarter funding goal of $20,000 CAD and has been Greenlit on Steam.

The game's bleak world is rendered in a unique art style utilizing a high-contrast thermal camera viewpoint, giving it an almost surreal sense of detachment. Visually, Noct reminds me a bit of Teleglitch, but with a much more eerie and claustrophobic atmosphere.

I have to admit, when initially viewing the footage in the trailer I wasn't overly impressed. I thought the game had a unique look and would probably cater to my penchant for top-down shooters, but once I saw the some of the larger enemy types, I was hooked.

Toronto-based developer Chris Eskins has stated that the creature designs were inspired both by the eldritch monstrosities of Lovecraftian literature and the giant boss creatures from classic games like Gradius and Contra. If you'd like to get a closer look at the beasties you'll be facing off against in motion, make sure to have a look at the game's Imgur page. Note the little details like the heat signatures coming off the spent brass.

At the time of this writing there is no footage of the game being played available to share with you, but I've contacted the developer and we should be posting something in the very near future. In the meantime, have a look at the the prototype trailer and let us know what you think.

News::Free update for Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare adds tweaked classes, tacos

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare has already done right by its users by providing good post-launch support via free downloadable content, and it is continuing on that path with tomorrow's Legends of the Lawn update.

The DLC features a host of character variants that add options to both sides of play. Additionally, a new mode called Taco Bandits is included, which is described as capture the flag, but with tacos instead of flags.

Legends of the Lawn should release for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One tomorrow, at the low price of zero dollars. You can't argue with that.

News::The Evolution of Assassin's Creed's Parkour-ign

The original Assassins Creed featured several fresh ideas when it released in 2007, but none was as trailblazing as the franchises parkour mechanics. According to Alexandre Pedneault, lead designer at Ubisoft Montreal on Assassins Creed Unity, the parkour mechanics were established long ago and have been passed down through the generations - not unlike the ancestral memories accessed in the Animus. Its the original team that created the philosophy and set the bar for the behavior of all the Assassins, he told IGN. They had high ambitions -- and most of them wanted to improve what they achieved in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. [] They really wanted to create a believable video game character.

It hasn't happened though, and YouTuber TotalBiscuit has revealed that he was only offered Shadow of Mordor code in return for a paid branding deal.

News::Video Game Museum Resurrecting Long-Dead MMO Habitat

This Sunday, The Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment in Oakland, CA sponsored a Hackathon to attempt to relaunch Habitat, a LucasArts MMO released for the Commodore 64 in 1986. Habitat is considered a hugely influential precursor to modern MMOs, and is often cited as a breakthrough for online communities. The game was incredibly ambitious project on its release. It used a network of Commodores connected over dial-up internet to create a virtual online community. Hamish McPherson takes a closer look at a title some consider to have invented the word "avatar".
