News:: That Super Mario animated film is really happening with the studio behind Despicable Me

At Nintendo's corporate management policy briefing tonight, we learned some interesting tidbits about where the company is going. We found out its paid online service is coming this September and that Mario Kart is going mobile with Mario Kart Tour. Nintendo ended the briefing by talking about the different ways the company has broadened the visibility of Nintendo IPs through cereal you can't you find in stores and non-gaming merchandise GameStops shove into every single inch of available floor space.

To wrap up the presentation, Nintendo confirmed a rumor we told you about not too long ago: there really is a new Super Mario movie on the way.

News:: Mario Kart is going mobile with Mario Kart Tour

After a bumpy start to its mobile strategy with the quickly forgotten -- and soon to be no more -- Miitomo and the underperforming Super Mario Run, Nintendo has really hit its stride. Fire Emblem Heroes is arguably one of the best games available on phones and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is proving to bit a hit with women. Nintendo is already raking in millions with its smartphone games, so just imagine what will happen when Mario Kart goes mobile with Mario Kart Tour.

News:: Shigeru Miyamoto will co-produce a 'Mario' animated movie

Nintendo's third big announcement of the evening comes right back to its main star, Mario, and the news that he will star in an animated movie. Shigeru Miyamoto is listed as co-producer along with Illumination Entertainment head Chris Meledandri, but the announcement didn't mention other details like a title or release date. The press release notes that Universal Pictures is co-financing the project and will handle worldwide distribution, and it seems ripe for a tie-in with theme park plans both companies are working on.

News:: Nintendo will bring 'Mario Kart Tour' to smartphones by March 2019

After Super Mario Run and Animal Crossing Pocket, the next Nintendo game to get a mobile version is Mario Kart. Following up on the company's plan to release 2-3 games per year (there's a Zelda game in development too) Mario Kart Tour is scheduled to arrive at some point before March 2019.

News:: Nintendo Switch's paid online service launches in September

Online multiplayer is free on Nintendo Switch and it'll remain that way until September 2018. That's when Nintendo plans to finally launch its subscription-based online service for the system.

Aside from the updated launch window, the company didn't share any new details -- though it sounds like we'll hear more specifics soon enough. As previously detailed, Nintendo Switch Online will grant access to online multiplayer, the Switch app, the so-called "Classic Game Selection" with added online play, and eShop deals. Subscriptions to the service will run $4 per month, or $20 per year.

I'll be curious to see what, if anything, changes as Nintendo talks details leading up to September. You also have to wonder what big-name game might potentially coincide with the service's rollout.

Worth noting: even once the paid service is live, you'll still be able to use the eShop, register and manage friends, share screens to social media, and use the parental controls app without a sub.

News:: Nintendo Switch Online will launch in September

We knew Nintendo's new online service would launch this year, and now we know Switch owners will be waiting until September for it. The company tweeted that Nintendo Switch Online will launch then, but didn't reveal much else. We know a few of the features (like access to archived titles) and that it will cost $20 per year, but that's about it for now. A few games are already making use of its mobile apps for things like voice chat, but hopefully, we'll find out more information soon.

News:: PUBG, esports, and mobile games earned quite a bit of money in 2017

A new report from market research group SuperData claims that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds earned over $700 million USD in 2017. While the game officially launched in December, its early access release was in March, so it had roughly nine months worth of revenue to get to that total. If we factor in the last reported sales figures of 30 million units, that means microtransactions picked up a huge amount of slack.

In the same report, SuperData also claimed the esports games brought in around $756 million USD in total profit. Overwatch and League of Legends are bringing in the most views, but it looks like esports will become a billion dollar industry in 2018 if market growth continues.

If you thought the mobile gaming industry would have died down, then this next figure is going to make you sick. According to SuperData, 2.5 billion people played free-to-play games between mobile and PC platforms and around $82 billion USD was brought in from various in-app purchases. The final claim is about virtual reality, which saw a 37 percent growth due to price cuts last year. SuperData also mentions how Sony's VR solution saw increased adoption thanks to things like Resident Evil 7 and Skyrim VR being premiere titles for the platform.

That mobile figure really blows my mind. Coming from a purely greedy standpoint, I can see why major publishers are so eager to shove microtransactions in every game. Hopefully we can move away from such business practices this year, but I have a feeling we'll start seeing "smarter" implementations following the Battlefront II fiasco.

News:: Murderous Pursuits is one big murder-mystery party

Murderous Pursuits puts you aboard the HMCS Britannic, "a state-of-the-art, colonial time ship built at the height of the British Empire's lavish Victorian era," and asks that you discreetly find and kill your mark without attracting unwanted attention. Problem is, it's not just passengers and the occasional guard on the vessel -- other would-be killers are making the rounds, trying their best to blend in.

Think you can behave like the AI well enough to fool your competition?

If this hunt-or-be-hunted concept feels like an extension of the The Ship, well, it should! Murderous Pursuits is in production at Blazing Griffin, the studio behind 2016's The Ship: Remasted. This latest murder mystery is fast approaching with a planned March 2018 launch on PC.

I can never keep my cool in these hiding-in-plain-sight games as pressure mounts (see also: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood), but I try my best. Murderous Pursuits will be playable alone or in "online multiplayer with other players, featuring support for custom game options and wickedly intelligent bots."

News:: D.Va's Meka is a surprisingly good addition to Doom

It's always enjoyable to take a look at the modding scene to see what people are adding to Doom. There's that Aliens project. And there's the one that added loot boxes to the original Doom. Or there's the guy who loves Doom so much that he put the old Doom in the new Doom.

This particular modder, MyNameIs, has spent time implementing Overwatch weapons into his Doom WAD Toward the Hell. There are videos on his YouTube channel of stuff like Hanzo's bow and Pharah's rocket launcher. It's D.Va's Meka that's the most popular though, and for good reason. (Yes, I know it's a year old at this point.)

Check it out. Just hop in that mech and mow down most of Hell's finest creations. It's mostly efficient, except Cyberdemons still pose quite the threat. Those things have no regard for robot or human life.

Thanks, Ticklefist!

News:: The Persistence looks like the next promising PlayStation VR horror game

Stealth-centric sci-fi horror in virtual reality sounds like a spooky good time, and that's exactly what we're getting in The Persistence, an upcoming PlayStation VR title from Firesprite. Your former crew members have become mutants and your ship is stranded in deep space, far from help. Good luck!

There's also procedural and roguelike elements, which could mesh well with VR horror if done right.

"You play as Security Officer Zimri Eder," says director Stuart Tilley. "Well, sort of. With each new life, you play as a fresh clone with her Engrams (her memories and personality) restored. With each new life comes the opportunity to re-sequence her DNA to create more powerful clones in the future."

As confirmed today, The Persistence is locked in for a July 24, 2018 launch. There's already a demo in the free PlayStation VR Demo Disc 2 on PlayStation Network, but I haven't gotten around to trying it. This does leave me daydreaming about Alien: Isolation and especially Dead Space in VR, though.

News:: Silly road-trip sim Death Road to Canada coming to Switch, PS4, and Xbox One

Do you like games that let you name characters after your friends, family, and celebrities of choice only for them to die tragically partway through the adventure? If so, you might enjoy Rocketcat Games' Death Road to Canada. It's a road-trip game set in the zombie apocalypse and it is ridiculous.

The game released on Steam in 2016, but now it's heading to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One this spring. All versions support two-player co-op, which I'd say is the ideal way to play.

Here's a snippet from my original review: "It can be too harsh for its own good, and folks who are tired of roguelikes will struggle to embrace that part of the design, but it's still one of the better road-trip games I've played thanks to its cheerful personality, amusing writing, and all-around charm."

My memory of Death Road is mostly a blur, but I'll never forget the moose who mauled me.

News:: The 300 Week 4: The Citizen Kane of Adorable Bear Movies

Welcome back to The 300, a weekly feature that recounts my foolhardy attempt to watch 300 movies in theaters in the year 2018. Each week I'll be watching new releases, classics, and hidden gems to explore the wide world of cinema.

As always, there are three rules in The 300:

  • The movie must be at least 40 minutes long, meeting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' definition of a feature film.
  • I must watch the movie at a movie theater, screening room, or outdoor screening venue.
  • While I can watch movies I've seen before 2018, I cannot count repeated viewings of the same film in 2018 multiple times.

Over the last week, a slight bit of dread has started to hang over The 300. MoviePass recently ended their partnership with select high-traffic AMC theaters, and the company also updated their terms of service. I expect a rate increase and/or viewing restrictions to kick in soon. If my MoviePass account gets frozen (it happened before in 2016), this whole 300 project could be in jeopardy.

Oh, the suspense!

Anyways, January is closing out strong, and I already have a lot of my February viewing schedule figured out. As of this writing, I am already over 10% of the way to my goal.

And so, onward.

News:: Rocket League has a busy spring, including making the Switch version look better

Four months ago, we talked to Psyonix at PAX West and got a rough overview of the future of Rocket League. Now that we're squarely into 2018, those plans are becoming a lot clearer and a lot more imminent.

Psyonix revealed Rocket League's month-by-month roadmap for the spring, and it's full of additions and improvements. One of the most notable changes is that the Switch version will get performance and quality modes in March. Those who want to prioritize performance will get 60 frames per second at 900p resolution in docked mode and 720p while portable; the quality prioritization is 1080p while docked and 720p while portable, both at 30 frames per second.

There's also plenty of news for competitive-oriented players. The roadmap indicates that single-elimination tournaments should be implemented in March or April. There will be a public tournament beta on Steam sometime in February. Also, on February 7, season 6 ends and season 7 begins. The reward for season 6 is a new set of wheels, and here's what they look like:

News:: Nintendo designer Genyo Takeda will be receiving a D.I.C.E. award

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences holds the D.I.C.E. Awards every year to recognize not only the entertainment we enjoy, but the people that made our entertainment possible. For the upcoming 21st D.I.C.E. Awards, acclaimed Nintendo designer Genyo Takeda will be the seventh person to receive a "Lifetime Achievement" award.

He is primarily known for his work on the Nintendo 64, GameCube and Wii systems, though he had contributed much more during his 45-year career with Nintendo. Some of his other achievements include directing Punch-Out!!! and Startropics on the NES as well as taking over as acting director of the company alongside Shigeru Miyamoto following the unfortunate passing of Satoru Iwata in 2015.

Nintendo of America's executive vice president Don James will be presenting Takeda the award at the show, which is to be held on February 22, 2018. James states, "As a Board Member of the AIAS, I've seen the impact he's had on thousands of producers and programmers as they have brought their creative visions to life on the systems he helped create. He looked at his own designs through the lens of always helping game developers. That approach to his life's work is a great gift he gave the development community, and ultimately gamers everywhere."

News:: You gotta Roll with this new Mega Man Nendoroid

If you cute quota for the day wasn't met by the NieR Automata Trading Arts Box, then perhaps this new Nendoroid of the lovable Roll from the Mega Man series may tip you over the edge.

The new figure, originally announced in September, shines the spotlight on Dr. Light's assistant and the "sister" of the Super Fighting Robot. The Nendoroid is based on Roll's design from Mega Man 11 and comes complete with multiple face-plates, accessories, and even a puppy-style Rush to keep her company. It really is quite lovely.

Roll is the sixth figure in the Nendoroid Mega Man range, following four versions of Mega Man himself and the edgy Zero. Roll can be pre-ordered from February 1 at The Good Smile Company's online store, where I can expect she will be priced around ¥4,400 / $40 /£30, in keeping with the rest of the range.

News:: Ys VIII new localisation patch is available for download now

The journey for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA has been a rocky one. NIS America bagged the rights to the legendary franchise from XSEED last year, but received complaints over the latest iteration's poor localisation and voice-acting, ultimately leading the developers to publicly apologise to the fanbase.

The original plans were to have a new, fully re-localised patch ready for download in November, but that date slipped. Now, finally, said patch is ready to download on both the PS4 and PS Vita. The new patch includes fixes to spelling and grammatical errors, as well new names for certain items, characters and monsters. It also includes re-recorded English dialogue. Better late than never.

The upcoming Nintendo Switch port will, of course, feature the new localisation as standard. Unfortunately, things are looking rough for the PC release of the title which, after suffering multiple technical issues, has been delayed even further, with NIS even offering refunds on pre-orders.

Still, looking at matters positively, those who have been wary of the PS4 or Vita release, due to the negativity surrounding its translation, may be able to finally pull the trigger on the title. Despite all the drama, its well worth remembering that the game as a whole was still received well by press and fans.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA is available now on PS4 and PS Vita. The Switch release is expected sometime in 2018, while the PC launch date remains a mystery.

News:: Bad Boys 3 is still happening, has new directors, shoots in August

If there is one thing that Martin Lawrence wants to have happen it's for a new Bad Boys movie to come. The guy pretty much talks about it any time he makes a public appearance, but last we heard it was all dead in the water, and that was from the mouth of the man who most wanted it to happen.

"Not so fast," says Sony! "We're not done beating this dead horse over here."

Deadline is reporting that the studio has tapped Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to direct the third film, which will see both Lawrence and Will Smith return. The two don't have much to their name, but they seem to be trending upward in Hollywood after directing Black

The third film in the series, now called Bad Boys for Life, has been in development hell since the second film released. With Smith too busy and no one really sure if anyone actually wants another Bad Boys movie it's just sort of sat around. But now Sony is actually pushing it forward it seems as they've even set an August start date to begin shooting. Bold movie, Sony. Bold move.

I couldn't be less excited. Action cinema has come a long way since Lawrence and Smith bickered on screen, and it's got a lot better in almost every way. Maybe their chemistry can save it, but Bad Boys just feels like a relic of the past.

News:: Hero shooter Gigantic set to close down in July

Gigantic is not long for this world. The Xbox One and PC hero shooter will shut down on July 31, 2018.

Leading up to the closure, every hero will be freely playable and the ability to purchase Rubies and Hero Packs has been switched off. "Currency will still be rewarded in-game, and any Crowns or Rubies gained by an account will remain available to purchase Shop items at discounted prices."

This decision was bound to happen sooner than later. Perfect World laid off staff at Gigantic developer Motiga back in November, leaving behind only a "core team" of developers to support the game.

Writing about the impending server shutdown, the remaining staff said "the current state of the game has restricted options for further progress and relevant content updates, and delivering basic features while also fixing long-standing issues was more complicated than expected." Simply put, Gigantic "did not resonate with as many players as we'd hoped" and couldn't "break through in a crowded market."

So this is it. The just-released January update, which adds a new character, will be Gigantic's last.

News:: We tried to send all of Hunt: Showdown's monstrosities back to hell where they belong

Please allow me to crib the title from our most recent video and say that Hunt: Showdown is intense. Like, always intense. Like, you could shoot these surprisingly-harrowing zombies but maybe it's smarter to not fire your gun so you better hope you can outrun them.

As we learned at E3, Hunt has a three-stage loop to it. Find three clues in the environment, locate and kill whatever monster this summoned (in our case, a big and nimble tarantula), and then banish it to hell and take the bounty. But, there's a critical fourth step: Escape with that bounty.

Even though Hunt seems largely about you and your pal against the horrors of the swamp, there are four other groups of players who want you dead. It's one and done, so getting other people out of the game increases your odds of taking off with the bounty. There's never a moment where you're at ease.

Crytek held a brief closed alpha yesterday, and this video is what we got out of it. It ran a little rough at times, but it's legitimately beautiful. The visuals and sound design make Hunt an immersive experience -- no matter how frustrating it can be. Join us in wading through what I call the Louisiana Fastball, because it's bayou.

Also, Jordan killed a horse. And he wanted to kill more. I think he's in the market for a horse snuffing simulator.

News:: NVIDIA proves the cloud can replace a high-end gaming rig

A year ago, NVIDIA's GeForce Now game streaming service let me play The Witcher 3, a notoriously demanding PC-only title, on a MacBook Air. This year, NVIDIA finally unveiled the Windows version of the service, and it was even more impressive. I was able to play Rainbow Six: Siege and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds on underpowered PCs that sell for $200 to $300. If NVIDIA's Mac demo was a revelation, playing high-end PC games on discount hardware felt like a miracle. Now, after testing the GeForce Now beta release on PCs for a week, I'm even more intrigued by the possibilities of game streaming.

News:: Review: Space Dave!

2014’s Woah Dave! from indie developer MiniVisions should have clicked with me in an instant. As a reimagining of the single-screen platformers that died at the arcades right as I first got into gaming, it should have been the type of throwback that kept me coming back for more. But something about it just never sat right with me. Maybe it was the color palette or the pick-up-and-throw gameplay, Woah Dave! was just too off for me to find real enjoyment in it.

Space Dave! ain't got none of those issues.

News:: Look for these two new DualShock 4 colors in March

I'll admit it: I'm a total sucker for alternate controller colors. Not to the point where I unnecessarily stock up on gamepads to "collect" them -- that'd get way too expensive even with just one console -- but if I'm in need of a replacement, I try to go for different designs every time. Here are two new options.

Sony is coming out with two more colors for the DualShock 4 in March: Steel Black and Midnight Blue. The former would go great with my silver controller and the latter is a soothing shade.

These will be available in North America next month for $65 USD and $75 CAD each.

News:: The Wii Shop miraculously isn't dead yet, but your ability to buy points for it will be soon

One of my favorite things about the Wii was the Everybody Votes channel. A lot of the time I'd pop that bad boy on even if I had no intention of playing something on the Wii, which was a neat little phenomenon that some other consoles can't replicate. But it's dead now, along with nearly everything else on the Wii -- except the Shop, which is dying soon enough.

As previously announced, the Wii Shop is going to last until January 31, 2019 (read: next year), after which point it's dead entirely. Kaput, no more, it ceases to exist, even if you ran four million volts through it.

That's a long lead right? Well here's the catch -- you can't buy points for it after 1PM PT on March 26. Yikes! So now you're basically on a timer as to when you can pick up that one game you missed out on. That 2019 timer is just for downloading games you already own.

This is such a bummer, especially since other storefronts like the Xbox Live Arcade are still up, alongside of perpetual markets like Steam.

News:: February's PlayStation Plus lineup includes the G.O.A.T. Knack

You might as well put aside all of your February plans, because Sony has dropped a bombshell with the PlayStation Plus lineup. Instead of offering up relatively unknown indie titles or even four-year-old AAA releases, we're finally getting the greatest game that has ever graced a home console; Knack! While the lineup stumbles a little by not including Knack 2 alongside this gem, at least Plus members finally have a reason to keep their subscriptions active.

The other games don't even matter, but you'll be able to download Rime on PS4, Mugen Souls Z and Spelunker HD on PS3 and finally Exiles End and Grand Kingdom on Vita, with that last game being a cross-buy title for PS4. I suppose the disappointing lineup was all thanks to Knack being such a huge pull.

StarBlood Arena is also being offered as a bonus for owners of the PlayStation VR headset and will be available for the duration of February. Again, anything looks paltry compared to Mark Cerny's baby.

News:: Tiny, adorable NieR: Automata figurines available to pre-order

Square Enix and Trading Arts have announced that they will release boxsets of mini figurines, based on characters from 2017's emo-smash NieR: Automata. The box-set features 10 randomly assorted figures from a collection of 11 characters, including one "secret" character.

The range features stars 2B, 9S, A2, Operator 210 and Machine, with each character receiving his or her own variant. Although that amounts to ten figures, and there are ten figures in each box, it appears that the fashionable "You don't know what you're getting" schtick is in effect. Why buy something you want when you can spend fifty bucks and hope instead? Ehhh, old man rant over.

The cutesy figurines are the chibi-est of chibi, standing at a mere 36mm in height. Each comes with a clear plastic base and the gang would look absolutely darling in anyone's collection. Anyone interested in pre-ordering the set should head over to the AmiAmi store where you can pre-order a box for a limited time price of ¥5,980/$55/£40.

The NieR: Automata Trading Arts Box is expected to arrive in May.

News:: Hollow Knight: Gods & Glory will be the game's third free DLC

Hollow Knight is one of the best indie platformers to come out in a long time and the game is about to get even better. The third free DLC has just been announced as Gods & Glory and it looks to feature a bunch of new content. The biggest addition has to be extra boss fights, but there will also be a brand new questline, a new character, new music and a new game mode.
