News:: The Witcher 3's Xbox One X update sounds significant

The Xbox One X releases on Tuesday and if you're upgrading to the more-powerful system, you probably have some games in mind to test out (find a list of supported titles here).  Even though The Witcher 3 has been out for a while -- long enough that you could've had your fill of the core game and the expansions and then some -- I think it'll be a good showcase. I mean, it's a hell of a game.

CD Projekt RED has spoken more about its Xbox One X update for The Witcher 3 in a post on Xbox Wire. It's said to support 4K resolution, "higher-quality shadows, ambient occlusion and texture filtering, as well as higher resolution textures, and an all-around performance boost." So, the works.

"Thanks to 4K, we can show everything our artists created with more detail," noted development lead Jakub Kutrzuba. "And it's not just owners of a 4K TV who will benefit from the higher resolution. Thanks to supersampling, the leap in quality will be visible even on a 1080p screen."

As I said when I covered the PS4 Pro update, I'm glad the studio took time off from Gwent and Cyberpunk 2077 to work on this stuff. And supersampling? Icing on top.

News:: Rest in peace, The Tomorrow Children

Today marks the end of the road for The Tomorrow Children, Q-Games and Japan Studio's strange, somber, gorgeous, and oftentimes mundane social sandbox game about rebuilding a destroyed world.

The free-to-play PlayStation 4 title shut down its servers today as previously scheduled, and while it lacked the mechanical depth and hooks needed to keep me invested for too long after launch in October 2016, I am bummed knowing that it's now gone for good. It had a one-of-a-kind feel.

Q-Games took to Twitter to thank fans, friends, and family for their support.

"It was years in the making but today the servers have officially shutdown. Thousands of hours were spent on this passion project and we loved every second of it. Thank you to everyone that stood with us to the very end. Thank you to our wonderful and talented staff that made this dream a reality. Thank you to our families that stayed up late waiting for us to come home. But mostly thank you to the dedicated players around the world. This journey may be over but there is always the next one."

I'd love to see Q-Games revisit this world if the opportunity ever arises. So many people missed out on that aspect of The Tomorrow Children by either passing on the game or never even hearing about it in the first place (which is understandable on both counts). The setting has untapped potential.

"We hope you'll join us next time," the studio said in closing.

News:: Stranger Things Experience coming to PlayStation VR

Sony released a teaser trailer announcing that PlayStation VR will be a getting an "experience" soon based upon everyone's favourite "Have you watched it yet?" Netflix show, Stranger Things.

The teaser, frankly, is little more than an animated announcement. As such, it doesn't really tell us anything. The news comes during a week where PlayStation VR has seen a real resurgence in upcoming projects, with multiple new titles announced at Sony's Paris conference for the immersive 3D hardware.

There was a short, interactive YouTube game released well over a year ago that featured a scene similar to the one in the teaser below. It remains to be seen whether this "new" PSVR game is just a dusted-off replication of that, or whether it will be re-worked and expanded for the Sony hardware.

Stranger Things recently debuted its second season, which got off to the best start by featuring a Dragon's Lair cabinet. It is available to watch on Netflix now.

News:: Review: Retro-Bit Dual Link SNES/Genesis Controller

The SNES Classic has been out a while now and my daughter and I have been enjoying it quite a bit. The best thing about it is the controllers. Having played with a Raspberry Pi, it was tough to find a suitable controller to use in the third-party market. I experimented a lot before finding something I liked, but having dealt with Retro-Bit and reviewed some of their other products, I was excited when they told me they’d send along a couple of new offerings, a Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo gamepad, complete with USB and original console ends for me to take a look at.

I am glad they haven’t broken their recent trend of offering decent accessories, because these new ones have made a fine addition to my growing collection of input devices.

News:: No, Osama bin Laden probably didn't play video games

There's a sad glut of headlines going around today all distantly framed as "Osama bin Laden: He's just like you!" The CIA has just released a list of 470,000 files that were found in the May 2011 raid on his Abbottabad compound. Among them are some pop culture names that you, yourself, probably enjoy.

Here are some movies, video games, and programs that the CIA recovered on hard drives inside the bin Laden compound:

News:: Bloggers Wanted: Overstuffed

Is there a holiday or time of the year more indulgent than Thanksgiving? I mean, we cook a turkey that weighs as much as three newborn babies, whip up about a billion sides consisting mostly of carbs and butter, and top the whole thing off with nine different pies, all featuring the main ingredient of "excess." It's equal parts disgusting and awesome, and is definitely my second favorite holiday behind our dearly departed Halloween.

But we were so occupied with whether we could eat six pounds of food in one sitting, that we didn't stop to think if we should. That brings us to November's Bloggers Wanted prompt: Overstuffed.

News:: Resogun developers Housemarque leaving arcade shooter genre

Speaking to EndGadget, Helsinki-based developers Housemarque announced that they are moving on from their trademark arcade shmup shooters, due to the genre not being financially viable in today's gaming climate.

The company have put out several excellent titles over the years, such as early PS4 game Resogun, Super Stardust HD and the brilliant Nex Machina, with their latest game, Matterfall receiving official Sony distribution. All of these titles were received positively by critics and genre fans.

Sadly, that doesn't automatically translate to big bucks, with Nex Machina failing to sell over 100,000 copies across two formats. Still an impressive number for a niche title, but not enough to keep the company in financial security.

"We are really proud of what we accomplished with Nex Machina," said Housemarque CEO Ilari Kuittinen. "It was a passionate work of love, and we got to work with our hero, Eugene Jarvis. We don't have regrets. We would have liked to continue down this path, but unfortunately that's not possible."

Though it fortunately appears that there will be no job losses at the fifty-strong developer, Housemarque have no choice but to pursue other avenues of gaming more aligned with the mainstream consumer, rather than the passionate genre stalwarts. It's quite sad, as vibrant, flashy shmups are clearly where the heart of the team lies, but obviously they need to stay afloat like everybody else. Here's hoping the team bring their gorgeous visuals and pulse-pounding action to more financially-secure titles in the future.

"I think we've seen the writing on the wall for quite a long time," continues Kuittinen. "We were just hoping that we might be able to reverse the tide."

A company letter to the fans about their new direction can be read here. Housemarque also released the music video below, originally intended to promote an update for Nex Machina, as a thank you to their dedicated followers.

News:: This Japanese Dragon Ball FighterZ overview trailer is just damn good to look at

Although I didn't understand what anyone was saying, the context clues were good enough to gauge what was going on in this latest Dragon Ball FighterZ. Along with some of that good, good Bulma (who I hope gets to be a playable fighter someday), we get some new story mode cutscenes, a little bit of info as to how it works (going to certain points on a map to fight evil clones), some footage of the lobby and replay systems, and brief, brief looks at the newer characters like Tien and Nappa.

The rest of the information here is pretty much stuff we already know (other than the Dragon Ball collecting mode), but seeing more of Android 21 is very promising. Can't wait to see how she plays.

News:: Call of Duty: WWII airdrops your loot boxes for all to see

Ahead of Call of Duty: WWII launching this Friday, a clip has surfaced on reddit that shows how the game handles loot boxes. Rather than just go through a menu, you'll be able to call in a supply drop while you're out and about in the Normandy beach social space with other players. It's all very showy.

How to open a Supply Drop in WW2 from WWII

Asked if anyone can steal your stuff (now wouldn't that be something?), uploader cuzseile replied "No but the other guys can see what you get." And that's clearly the point. It's not enough that loot boxes exist in the game, you need to be repeatedly reminded that they're there. No escape.

News:: Put Joanna Jedrzejczyk on the cover of EA Sports UFC 3

UFC has a problem that was unimaginable two years ago: It's lacking mainstream stars. Ronda Rousey has been beaten badly in her past two fights, and, even though she hasn't yet retired, UFC president Dana White doesn't expect her back. Conor McGregor, who's undeniably the promotion's biggest draw, hasn't fought an MMA match in 2017; he's proven time and time again that he'll follow the money. Jon Jones fucked up, probably for the last time.

So who does UFC have left? Current Middleweight champion Michael Bisping is somehow an underdog this weekend to George St-Pierre, a man who hasn't fought in four years. Stipe Miocic shares the Heavyweight record for two consecutive title defenses, which says more about the constant shakeup in that division than anything else. Tyron Woodley's great but no one outside of MMA circles knows his name.

The Woodley Problem is really the heart of UFC's issues. It's full of up-and-comers and just-not-quiters. Fighters who have been very good but not transcendently good. It's full of Lawlers and Edgars and Fergusons and Aldos and Holms. None of these people have mainstream appeal unless they're attached to someone like McGregor or Rousey. None of these people sell video games.

EA Sports UFC 3 will be officially revealed on November 3. Put the most dominant fighter in UFC on the cover. Put Joanna Jedrzejczyk on the cover.

Jedrzejczyk is ridiculous. She's gunning for her sixth straight Strawweight title defense on Saturday and she's going to get it. Vegas has her betting odds at -600 right now, by far the biggest favorite of the night. You'd have to bet $600 on her to win $100. That's a lot of money down to win not a lot of money. That's how goddamn sure everyone is that she's going to win.

Jedrzejczyk is probably the most talented striker in the UFC. Over her past six fights, she's landed three times as many strikes as her opponents have. Even though her last four matches have gone to decisions, they weren't particularly close decisions. She's not knocking people out, but she's absolutely outclasssing them. This profile on Deadspin nicely details exactly what makes her so uniquely proficient and dangerous.

As that Deadspin headline reads, it's not a stretch to call Jedrzejczyk the greatest female fighter ever. Rousey and Cris Cyborg are the only other contenders. A case could be made for all three, but Jedrzejczyk has the other two beat in terms of technical skill.

It's time people stop overlooking Jedrzejczyk. It's time she gets the credit she deserves. Put Joanna Jedrzejczyk on the cover of EA Sports UFC 3.

News:: Super Mario Odyssey speedruns are starting to roll in, and they're amazing

The moment I started playing Mario Odyssey, I knew it was going to be a great speedrun game. I mean most Mario titles are, truthfully, but the sheer amount of tech available due to the Cappy transformations is really going to lend some variety to all of the speedrun videos coming out.

There's a bunch already, too, and they're already dipping into below the hour and a half mark. World records are teetering around 1:28:00 at the time of this writing, and will probably be shaved on a day-to-day basis until a plateau is reached (which could be months as long as new discoveries are made). One of the best runners, IMtendo (who you can watch below), even thinks that runners can shave down to sub one-hour clears.

Another big thing to note is that there are multiple categories available for speedruns, including the well-loved "any %" modifier. That means that prospective runners can acquire whatever Moons they want so long as the critical path is cleared (read: 253), so there's likely going to be a lot of differential when it comes to figuring out which Moons are the most important to grab. If you want content complete (503 for clearing the secret level) or 100% runs, they're an option too, but the latter is going to be pretty insane given the sheer number of coins required to unlock every costume.

Wolfenstein: The New Colossus improves on everything you liked in the franchise's soft reboot, 2014's Wolfenstein: The New Order. The action, set pieces, characters and writing are all sharper this time around. So is the thoughtful terror in the alternate universe's setting. After striking a blow in Europe against the global Nazi regime in the first game, The New Colossus brings protagonist BJ Blazkowicz and his anti-Nazi crew back to the US — where they find many Americans have gleefully accepted Nazi rule.

News:: Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth comes to GOG

Halloween has come and gone, but it lives on in our hearts, and 2005's first-person horror adventure Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth can offer some respite from creeping holiday cheer. The game is now available through GOG.com for Windows 7, 8, and 10 at the impulse-worthy price of $5.

My main point of reference for this game is the tense escape sequence shown below. I've always meant to play it, but talk of bugs and other annoyances with the PC version put me off. While there are fixes out there, sometimes you just want to get in, get scared for a bit, and get out without much fuss.

GOG says this build of Call of Cthulhu has "various small fixes, including: proper V-sync functionality, a fix for the triangle raindrops on AMD cards, and a custom-made fix provided by user Guzz, which allows the invisible sorcerers on the reef to appear properly, plus restores skybox rendering."

News:: I'm all about this Viewtiful Joe outfit in Dead Rising 4

This latest batch of outfit reveals for Capcom Heroes mode in Dead Rising 4 is a doozy.

It warms my heart to see any acknowledgment that Viewtiful Joe a) existed and b) is worth celebrating but, beyond that, I'm also pleased to find that Arthur's exaggerated running animation is straight out of Ghosts 'n Goblins. There's also Amaterasu, Jill Valentine, Morrigan and her excellent bangs, and the big-eyed Bass. That's all in addition to previous costumes like Mecha-Zangief and Sissel.

In short, this dress-up-and-kill mode seems pretty dang good -- especially since it'll be free.

Capcom Heroes launches for Dead Rising 4 on December 5, which is the same day Dead Rising 4: Frank's Big Package releases for PlayStation 4. If you end up pre-ordering the latter (in North America, "at participating retailers") you'll score a free copy of the original Dead Rising for PS4.

News:: November's PlayStation Plus games are more bountiful than usual

There might not be much in the way of thematic cohesion across November's PlayStation Plus games, but that's made up for by sheer quantity. Sony's offering seven titles this month instead of the usual six.

The reason for the uptick in games is the recent one-year anniversary of PlayStation VR's launch. Because of that, Plus subscribers also get Until Dawn: Rush of Blood this month. Also, it's available until January 3 instead of the usual end of the month.

As for the normal November titles, there's some decent stuff sprinkled in. Abstract platformer Bound (PS4 and PSVR) is one of the best PSVR has to offer in terms of crispness and lack of jaggies. The rest of the games are Worms Battlegrounds (PS4), Dungeon Punks (PS4 and Vita), R-Type Dimensions (PS3), Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic (PS3), and Broken Sword 5: The Serpent's Curse Episodes 1 and 2 (Vita).

It looks like Korg is bringing its Gadget music-making app to the Nintendo Switch next spring. There isn't a ton known about it at the moment, but given the name, it seems like it's a port of the synth company's end-to-end iOS and Mac music production suite. News:: Santa must have got my letter, because Style Savvy: Styling Star is coming this Christmas

Oh Style Savvy. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. One… two… three... the fourth entry in Nintendo’s fashion empire builder, Style Savvy: Styling Star, was announced just a few weeks ago for release in Japan and Europe in the last set of Nintendo Directs to feature 3DS content. Fans in North America were left in limbo on whether or not we’d even get the game, with support for the 3DS starting to wane. But limbo no more. It has been confirmed Styling Star will hit the 3DS eShop on Christmas Day.

The prime gimmick of Styling Star is… well… styling stars. We’ll be performing makeovers on up-and-coming starlets with more than 20,000 different fashion items. Apparently, how we style them will also affect their storyline. This can either be really in-depth or simply skin deep, but it’ll be neat to see just how much damage I can do to some of these girls. I mean, how wonderful would it be to absolutely destroy an actress’s career by pulling a Felicity haircut on her?

Men’s fashion is also back and this time around we can hire a male or female assistant in our shop. Past activities such as starting a fashion brand, fashion shows and customizing our shops and apartment return. There will also be amiibo support.

Oh yeah, and there is also a demo available right now.

No price point has been announced yet and it is unclear if North America will receive a physical release down the road. Given we never got one for the excellent Rhythm Heaven Megamix, I’m not going to hold my breath. Either way, I am down to clown for more Style Savvy and thank the high heavens Nintendo and Syn Sophia are keeping the franchise going and growing.

News:: Owlboy will be hitting consoles, including the Switch, next year

We loved Owlboy back in November of 2016. But since then it's only been available on PC -- in a Switch-less world, no less!

That's about to change though, as D-Pad Studio has announced that their creation will be coming to the PS4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch on February 13, 2018. Blitworks will be handling the port transition, and to celebrate, Owlboy is now 40% on Steam for 24 hours, which comes with support for 10 new languages. A physical version is also in the works by way of Soedesco (tentative boxart in the gallery below).

For years I was accustomed to writing the words "PC, PS4, Xbox One" on nearly every release, but it warms my heart to see "Switch" popping up so often these days. As an old school platformer at heart, this is a perfect match for the system.

News:: Are you going to be picking up Switch ports like Skyrim?

Skyrim is that game that just won't die.

Not that I'm bitter that Bethesda didn't choose Morrowind for that task or anything (man, if only we could get a remaster of that every generation; I want to live in an HD Balmora!), but it's been ported so many different times that it's hard to keep track at this point -- especially if you count all the major updates like that Dragon Shout Kinect patch for Xbox (remember that?).

It's poised to make a splash yet again with the large install base of the Nintendo Switch, and after a lot of teasing, it's finally arriving on the system in mid-November. The question is, do you want it?

As always, if you're a "Nintendo-only" gamer, it makes a lot of sense why you'd want in on this wave. You've missed out on just about every Bethesda release for years on end, so you can finally join the party and see what all of the fuss is about -- even if you aren't even into the idea of a game like this.

But for everyone else, I'm willing to bet you're suffering from Skyrim fatigue. I was at the midnight launch and stayed up all night to beat the campaign, slowly making my way through the rest of the content/achievements months later. Then came the PC mods, and eventually, the Special Edition touched up version on current edition consoles. It's a lot!

While I'm anxious to play the Switch edition and see what amiibo support and Joy-Con can bring to the table, I don't think I'll be going for a 100% clear, if you know what I mean. What about you though?
