News:: Microsoft's redesigned Mixer mobile app helps you find new streams

Microsoft is continuing its quest to make Mixer as good a livestreaming experience on your phone as it is on your PC back home. It just launched a beta mobile app whose cornerstone is a redesigned Trending section that focuses on finding new game broadcasts. There's a carousel that flips through featured streams, and sections that highlight the hottest games and trending streams. It's now much easier to filter streams by type (such as co-op or interactive), and there's a new Following section to jump directly to the channels you already know.

News:: Unearthed Sweet Home commercial has a very grabby torso

Sweet Home is the weird, ugly step-father of the Resident Evil series. Never to be sold outside of Japan, the game's mix of Dragon Quest-influenced mechanics and brutal, feel bad aesthetics weren't likely to find much of an audience on the NES in 1990, but the game did OK in its home country. Since then, it's been written about countless times, usually with regard to the film that was released alongside it, and/or its previously mentioned influence on the Resident Evil series. A lot of people know about the game, many have watched playthroughs of it on YouTube, but few have gotten around to really playing the darn thing

This commercial for the game may change that, though. Spotted in our Qposts and uploaded by the good folks at Chronotendo, this 60 second long short does a great job of selling the whole concept of Sweet Home, though like many "story trailers" for games, it doesn't do a whole lot to let you know how it actually plays. If you're more keen on the live action portions of the short, you can watch the whole movie here for free, but beware, it's pretty darn slow. You might be better off watching Hausu instead

And I guess that's about it for Halloween at Destructoid this year. If you did something spooky tonight, tell me about it. All I did was fill out a mortgage application while developing a cold sore. Pretty scary stuff, but not really in the way that makes for a good story. If you have a better one, I'm all ears.

News:: Witcher musical opening in Poland this November

I've only started working my way through the Witcher series this year, but even with my limited knowledge I never took Geralt for a very musical fellow. It appears despite his rather stoic demeanor, Geralt will be slaying monsters mid-song because a Witcher musical is actually happening.

The show is called Wiedzmin which is the original Polish title for the book series and will be opening this November, in Gdynia, Poland. Should you be in Poland you can find ticketing information here.

News:: There's going to be a Bloodborne comic

As much as I don't typically go for comics based on games, I'm willing to make an exception for Bloodborne, whether it's fan-created or officially sanctioned. Anything to get me back in this horrific universe. With that in mind, I'm very curious to see how Titan Comics adapts the IP next year.

Its first issue, Bloodborne: The Death of Sleep, will be out physically and digitally in February.

Aside from the cover art, we've also got a summary:

In Titan Comics' new Bloodborne: The Death of Sleep - written by Ales Kot (Generation Gone, Zero), with art by Piotr Kowalski (Wolfenstein, Dark Souls) - a nameless Hunter awakens in an ancient city where horrific beasts stalk the shadows and the streets run slick with the blood of the damned. Seeking an escape from the endless Night of the Hunt, the Hunter embarks upon a dangerous, gore-filled quest with the hopes of ending Yharnam's twisted endemic.

News:: Overcoming Fear: Call of Poopy

[For most people, when asked to overcome a fear their mind typically goes to an instance where they were spooked by something horrifying and sinister. For Kevin, overcoming fear meant to defy social convention and be the man he was meant to be. Good job, DeadMoon! Get your work featured by Destructoid by contributing to our monthly Bloggers Wanted prompt. Now get out there and get spooky! - Wes]

Believe it or not, there was a time when all I played was the latest AAA games. I mainly stick to smaller indie titles now, but that only started after XBLIG and XBLA showed me the glowing creativity that was possible at the lower-cost levels of game development. Still, there was something magical about those big blockbusters like the Gears of War series and Halo 3. I spent countless hours after school teaming up with my friends and showing strangers on the internet just how the fuck it was done.

Call of Duty, however, never really struck a chord with me. That is, until the original Modern Warfare released. I still thought the online was garbage twitch shooting that lacked any real room for coordinated team combat unlike my slower-paced favorites. Although, I did manage to fall head over heels for the campaign mode. I must have beaten that damn thing on Veteran at least 30 times. It was incredibly fresh and a genuine challenge at the time. Sure, the checkpoints were fairly generous, but you had to know what the hell you were doing to actually see it through. The arcade mode was a blessing as well. I loved the score-chasing aspect of it.

News:: Sega won't be sending out Sonic Forces review codes before release

There is a trend in the film industry of not showing pre-screenings of upcoming movies when the studio doesn't believe the film is that good. This is an attempt to avoid people reading negative reviews and to get uncertain people into seats before they hear anything. I'm not sure if that really works or not, but some games publishers have been utilizing similar practices in recent years. Bethesda is the most prominent, outright refusing to send review codes until the day of release, but it looks like Sega is now following suit with Sonic Forces.

Ever since its initial reveal trailer, fans have been speculative of the quality of Forces. Shown alongside the 2D revival Sonic Mania, it looked like the proper Sonic Team game was going to get upstaged by a fan project. While we still don't know if that is true, this pre-release embargo might as well outright confirm it. Why else would Sega not want reviewers to play the game early?

This news was confirmed by IGN's executive editor of reviews, Dan Stapleton, on twitter.

News:: A fresh look at Bloodstained just in time for Halloween

It's all too fitting that we'd get a Bloodstained development update on Halloween.

The team has shared a few tracks as well as a new video depicting a courtyard area and a clash with Zangetsu, a samurai who "resents anyone and anything tainted by demonic power."

There's also a tease nestled in the Kickstarter update: the developers say they "know how eagerly you've been awaiting another demo." Nothing is being announced "yet," but "there are lots of big surprises coming soon, and we can't wait to... well, surprise you with them."

For my part, I'm mostly focused on Miriam's movement, and from that perspective, I like what I'm seeing here. There's room to nitpick the footage, sure, but that's par for the course for crowdfunded games that provide updates with any sort of regularity. Bloodstained is due out next year.

News:: Overcoming Fear: Can I Really Be The Artist?

[Find that inward motivation to express creativity can be tough under normal circumstances. Add in the overlapping burden of family legacy, and you've got a hell of a dilemma on your hands. D-Volt shares with us a story of how his love for artistic expression hit a serious roadblock, only to be redeemed by the unlikely duo of a TV painter and a video game. This blog is fantastic, folks, and goes to show how video games can sometimes mean more than their face value. D-Volt got his work featured on Dtoid's Front Page by contributing to our Bloggers Wanted prompt, running with a new theme every month. Why don't you try your hand at it? - Wes]

Author's Note: This is the first time I'm including an audio version of my C-Blog. I know sometimes people want to read a blog, but don't have the time. I figured having the option to consume my work in audiobook-style format might make my work more accessible. You can also read through my blog while having it narrated by me or not use this option at all. The choice is entirely yours. But PLEASE, if you use this option and enjoy it, let me know in the comments! Making these takes a little extra time, so knowing whether it's worth it or not would be very valuable to me. With all that said, enjoy!

News:: You wanted more Switch games, so you got 'Monopoly'

As the Nintendo Switch was gearing up to launch back in March, fans worried that it would go the way of the big N's prior consoles: Spectacular first-party games with minimal third-party support. But after a tenuous few months when Zelda: Breath of the Wild seemed like the only thing worth playing, the floodgates have opened. Titles of all stripes are coming to the console, from Doom to Shin Megami Tensei V -- and so, it seems, has Monopoly.

News:: Monokuma turns Attack on Titan 2: Future Coordinates into a nightmare

While not much is known about the upcoming 3DS game Attack on Titan 2: Future Coordinates, publisher Spike Chunsoft probably created the most terrifying crossover imaginable. For those not in the know, Attack on Titan is an anime series that features gigantic human-like creatures assaulting a walled civilization of people. The titans, as they are referred to, are typically 30 ft tall and can wreak havoc on just about anything.

Now imagine blowing up Danganronpa's diabolical Monokuma to 30 ft and unleashing him on the world. I don't think we stand a chance! The very small scan from Famitsu magazine looks incredible and it honestly makes me really interested in trying out this game. I'm not sure if its headed to the West, but you'll be able to grab the Japanese version on November 30.

The game will feature a story mode (probably fashioned after season two of the anime) and online co-op with a selection of 80 characters from the anime. Here is a trailer that shows off some of the action. Sadly, Monokuma doesn't make an appearance.

Dtoid is always looking for cool blogs to promote to the front page, so get out there and write something cool! Make sure you brush your teeth tonight! - Wes]

It's impossibly deep! You flail around, hoping in vain that you tread enough water to stay afloat. Despite your best efforts you can't keep your head above the water and begin your slow, steady descent to the bottom of the seemingly endless void. Once your feet do touch the ground you try your best to keep moving but the water pressure crushing your body makes you feel as if you were Atlas with the weight of the entire world on your shoulders. Surely things can't get any worse! Then you hear it. The dreaded music. Move over Jaws - this is the most terrifying theme to ever shred through water! The pounding symphony of destruction comes faster and louder with each passing second; if your heartbeat were a canon it would make the guns of Navarone look like a child's play thing! Stricken with terror it finally happens, the music stops, and you die, drowned like a rat - or in this case a hedgehog.

If nothing else, EA is listening to the fans for Star Wars: Battlefront II. After all, outcry was the reason the game will have a single-player campaign mode and an awful lot more depth. News:: Ye old video game oddities: Rise from your grave!

Last issue, we showcased the day the spiders won, how 30 FPS is a matter of having class, an 8.8 score that burned the Zelda community to the ground, and my backup plan for the inevitable moment I'm capped in broad daylight. For this issue however, we'll be focusing on spooky video game myths and legends, fan theories, and worst of all -- reporting on my own death.

That's right, unfortunately, I've died. But thanks to an online service known as “Final Thoughts,” I'm able to keep sending emails from beyond the grave to my fellow peers. Thankfully, I was able to get this out there in the form of an email transcript. Whether it was the threat himself that did me in, or some angry person from the YouTube comments on our Super Mario Odyssey video review that murdered me over Chris Carter proclaiming Super Mario Sunshine was his “least favorite” 3D Mario, we'll never know.

News:: These Street Fighter vs. Darkstalkers posters are glorious

It just feels right posting this on Halloween.

Udon Entertainment has a line of 16"x24" prints that pay tribute to Street Fighter and Darkstalkers all while looking like classic movie posters. It doesn't get much better than that! And at $20 a piece, these aren't the wallet-busters that so many cool-looking pop-culture prints often are.

It's hard to pick a favorite but a few of us have settled on Victor von Gerdenheim vs. Blanka. Not just for the featured characters (though that is a fun match-up), but for the composition, too.

News:: PUBG will make it to Xbox One on December 12

The long-awaited Xbox One version of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds will debut on December 12, 2017, Microsoft Studios and PUBG Corp. have announced.

The wildly popular battle royale title will first be available as part of the Xbox Game Preview program, as expected, so this really only marks the beginning. The PC version of PUBG is also still in its early-access phase, but the developers are targeting "late December" for the 1.0 launch.

"Both versions are being developed at the same time, but they both have their own separate roadmaps," said PUBG Corp. CEO Chang Han Kim. "Various Xbox One features and functionality will change and come online over time just like they have on PC, with our goal being to have both versions align to each other as soon as possible."

News:: Pony Island developer's next game stars video game archetypes gone wrong

“It was my mom,” a friend shared with a strident laugh at a packed Vancouver monthly indie game developer gathering. For me: an ex-colleague. Both my friend’s mother and my former coworker were used in a clever prank by Pony Island. At one point, this creepy puzzle game scans your Steam friend list for a devious fright that spills out of the PC game’s window. Unlike usual video game horror tricks that dissipate after the encounter, Pony Island’s scare is more akin to learning mid-conversation that your current Chatroulette buddy died two days ago. When it launched last January, the title spawned conversations galore among local industry folks about its subversive horror. And when the creator’s next game, The Hex, releases next spring, I’d reckon it'll bewilder bartenders at those indie meetups.

The Hex is largely inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, for the most part. In an old tavern, six patrons sit out the turbulent weather when the phone rings with news that someone will be murdered by daylight. Also, those patrons? They’re video game characters. During the game, you’ll play as The Space Marine, The Sorceress, The Platformer, The Fighter, The Apocalypse Survivor, and The First Person Perspective — each with their own individual gameplay style during flashbacks. For instance, The Sorceress will have to wait her turn, as in RPG fights from a time long ago. When they aren’t exorcising the ghosts of the past, they will prod and poke the establishment to identify the killer. Less abstract than Pony Island’s descent into digital madness, The Hex weaves a more straightforward tale of one long night for some video game archetypes gone awry.

To learn more, we chatted with its creator, Daniel Mullins, about his upcoming murder mystery.

News:: 'PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' arrives on Xbox One December 12th

For Xbox One owners, the wait to play PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) will end December 12th. The battle royale game consistently racks up 2 million daily players on Steam, and in just over a month it will transition to the Xbox Game Preview program as a work in progress, with studio Bluehole leaning on players to help guide the game's development. "We can use it like Steam Early Access where we can develop on console with the community, and that's going to be really essential -- in our view -- for getting a really great version on console," creator Brendan Greene told Engadget.

News:: Star Wars Battlefront II's loot crate system revised in response to player criticism

The way the Star Wars Battlefront II beta handled progression and loot crates didn't sit well with some players, and while DICE later clarified certain points to alleviate fears, the studio is now taking more substantial action in light of player feedback. The new system isn't perfect, but it's improved.

This is what you can expect at launch on November 17:

  • Epic Star Cards, the highest tier of Star Cards available at launch, have been removed from Crates. To help keep everyone on a level playing field, these Star Cards will primarily be available through crafting, with the exception of special Epic Star Cards available through pre-order, deluxe, and starter packs.
  • You'll need to reach a certain rank to craft upgraded Star Cards. You won't be able to buy a bunch of Crates, grind everything up into crafting materials, and immediately use them to get super powerful Star Cards. You can only upgrade the ability to craft higher tier Star Cards by ranking up through playing the game.
  • Weapons are locked behind specific milestones. While a select few will be found in Crates, the rest can only be attained by play. Want to unlock a new weapon for your Heavy? Play as a Heavy and you’ll gain access to the class’s new weapons.
  • Class-specific gear and items can be unlocked by playing as them. As you progress through your favorite class, you’ll hit milestones granting you class-specific Crates. These will include a mix of Star Cards and Crafting Parts to benefit your class’s development.

Those last two points are the biggest deal for me (not that keeping a "level playing field" isn't important too). During the beta, I earned a whole lot of stuff for ships and characters I'd rarely if ever want to use instead of upgrades for the classes I was actually investing time in and doing best with.

EA notes that this revised progression system "will be continually iterated on and improved," so keep your feedback coming. They are listening. (Though, clearly, loot crates are here to stay.)

News:: Classic Carentan map returns in Call of Duty: WWII trailer

A new trailer has been released by Activision revealing that Carentan, a map from your dad's Call of Duty games, will make a return in Call of Duty: WWII, which releases later this week.

Carentan is a map well-remembered by COD fans from the franchise's early years, appearing in both Call of Duty and Call of Duty II. The map will be available on launch day for owners of the Deluxe Edition of Call of Duty: WWII and season pass holders.

The Battle of Carentan took place between the U.S. Army and the Wehrmacht during the Normandy offensive of 1944. The battle ended on June 12 when the Nazis were forced to retreat due to a lack of ammunition.

The trailer ends with an advertisement for the game's first DLC expansion, The Resistance, which is coming to the PS4 release January 30, with other formats following some time afterward.

News:: Overcoming Fear: Knowledge is Power

[Anyone who says they aren't afraid of water levels and the awful music that typically plays as you watch your hero clutch their throat for air in a futile attempt to continue being a living person is a liar. Cedi, thankfully, is a truthful person. Join them as they recount a horrible fear of drowning in a hotel pool, and how they eventually learned to move beyond that fear with reason. Get your work on Dtoid's front page by participating in our monthly Bloggers Wanted prompts! Have a spooky Halloween! - Wes]

Confession time: Despite how much I like to project strength, when it comes to games invoking a sense of fear I’m a big wuss. Jump scares make me seizure and lock up more than any flashing lights do, and I was diagnosed with autism and seizures from an early age. Horror games and movies are my “no thanks” genre. I’m plenty alright with creepy, unnerving, and disturbing atmospheres, but if a game wants to make me actually be afraid, my gut reaction is to throw the controller out of my window and into my neighbor’s window, whom I then beg to play the game in my stead.

Hyperbole aside, I actually used to ask my sister play the haunted levels of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle because I was that afraid of the ghosts that pop up out of nowhere. She had rarely played the game outside the Chao Garden before that point. So when I saw that this month’s Bloggers Wanted prompt was about facing and overcoming fear, I took a big gulp. How could I possibly pretend to overcome fear when I’m so timid that I constantly try to avoid it?

News:: This short clip will teach you the basics of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT

Any iteration of Dissidia Final Fantasy, including the upcoming PS4 NT version, can seem a little all over the place from an outsider's perspective -- hell, a lot of you that played the beta felt like it was messy even after testing it for yourself. Square Enix knows this, so they've been popping out little tutorials here and there online in Japan for people to peruse before its launch in January for folks to peruse, including this newly localized overview.

Essentially, the developers go over the four main classes (Vanguard, Assassin, Marksman, Specialist, not unlike a MOBA or hero shooter), then explain how the general mechanics work. To sort of sum up the madness, Dissidia NT is a 3v3 fighter where you're trying to get three KOs -- to do that, you need to use Bravery attacks (which throttle individual Bravery meters) to power up your HP attacks, which are used to actually damage your opponents.

Okay so there's no real great way to instantly explain away a lot of the intricacies, so maybe you should watch the video.

News:: Global shipments for the PlayStation 4 have reached 67.5 million

In a week of gaming fiscal revelations, Sony Interactive Entertainment have announced that the PS4 has now shipped a cool 67.5 million units worldwide, having moved 4.2 million from July until September alone.

As a result, Sony have chosen to increase the annual forecast for the console. The company now expects to have shifted around 80 million units by April of 2018. That's a staggering amount of hardware, especially when taking into consideration that the PlayStation 3 only shipped that same amount some seven years into its lifespan.

Given some of the reports we have seen released this week it looks like, for the majority, video gaming is most assuredly back in black.

This time of year, posts about ghosts, the supernatural, and even scary video games are a dime a dozen. Even around the office there have been lively discussions about ghosts and the supernatural. I don't contribute much to these discussions because I'm a bit of a skeptic.

That doesn't mean that I don't like a good ghost story or haven't experienced things that are inexplicable. Matter of fact, there are two instances which I experienced something sufficiently creepy.
