News:: Swery is making a new game called 'The Missing' and we know virtually nothing about it

Alongside of the insightful interviews from Toshimichi Mori (Producer and BlazBlue series creator), and Daisuke Ishiwatari (Director and Designer) from this week's Arc System Works event, the Japan-based publisher threw an extra bit of news my way -- Swery is making a new game with his White Owls label, and Arc is publishing it.

Um, okay! All we know about it is that it's called The Missing, and it's going to be released in 2018. Oh and there's a teaser trailer you can watch below, but you'll probably just end up being more confused if you see it. Swery calls Arc "very supportive" and ensures us that he has complete freedom.

News:: We talked to the creator of BlazBlue about the Cross Tag Battle DLC controversy

When it was announced that BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle would provide half its roster as DLC, the internet pretty much exploded. Hardcore and casual fans alike were upset at the hard push for add-ons, more than any other Arc System Works fighter to date.

But today we finally have confirmation on what the pricing scheme entails, and as it turns out it seems cheaper than your average western or eastern fighting game after adding a season pass.

News:: Review in Progress: Kingdom Come: Deliverance

When Kingdom Come: Deliverance is at its best, I'm lost in the most detailed forest I've ever seen in a video game, low on food, drinking alcohol for nourishment, all so I can reach the next town to sell my wares...because the last town hates me for stealing, murdering, and other various crimes against humanity.

When it's at its worst, I'm cursing the person responsible for the lock pick mini-game, having a hard time walking up stairs because of weird random collision detection and other bugs, encountering framerate hiccups, and being greeted by a familiar blue screen telling me: “An error has occurred in the following application.”

But, when it is at its best, I'm genuinely loving my time with Deliverance.

News:: Type-MOON's Garden of Sinners films are now on Crunchyroll

As Fate/Grand Order continues to run its Garden of Sinners event, the original movie series has appeared on Crunchyroll in the Americas. All in all, Aniplex made a good move in having the films on there since people who just learned about Ryougi Shiki might be interested in learning more about her. Coincidentally, when I was grinding to obtain Shiki as a permanent servant, the whole segment made me want to rewatch them.

Back when they premiered, I remember loving the way how ufotable (Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works 2014's Animation Production, Tales of Berseria's Opening) handled the lighting and the blood. In fact, The Garden of Sinners made me fall in love with the studio.

If you're into urban fantasy stories, I recommend giving them a watch, since they revolve around Shiki being involved in various supernatural investigations. To some extent, it's kind of like the early episode of Yu Yu Hakusho, but with a dark and serious tone. Most importantly, you gotta give Shiki some mad props for killing things while sporting a beautiful kimono and a gorgeous red jacket.

Since I remember the Blu-ray for the movies costing an arm and leg, I'm glad that there's another affordable place where people can watch them. Also, there's a chance that you might crave some Haagen-Daz strawberry ice cream after watching the films.

News:: How to play as Street Fighter's Ryu in Monster Hunter: World

Don't be alarmed if you start seeing Street Fighter's Ryu running around in Monster Hunter: World. Capcom added a crossover quest today that lets you play as the big-footed "Martial Artist in White."

You can find the quest by heading up to the Gathering Hub. Once there, just stroll over to the Arena Counter and post a quest called "Down the Dark, Muddy Path" found under the Challenges heading. It's a battle against a gargantuan Barroth, and you'll need to be Hunter Rank 3 or higher.

Currently, you can only initiate the quest if you have Street Fighter V data on your system. According to Capcom, the Street Fighter gear will be out for everyone "at a later date."

As for the Ryu armor itself, the Smithy will forge it for you in the Workshop (it's listed under "Full Armor Sets"). Here's what it takes to craft: SFV Ticket x7, Monster Bone M x6, Earth Crystal x6, and Barroth Shell x5. With that in mind, it'll take some time. My hammer smashin' skills need work.

News:: Mafia III studio suffers significant layoffs

Hangar 13, the developer behind 2016's Mafia III, was hit with a round of layoffs today. It's unclear how many of the Novato, California-based studio's employees were let go; LinkedIn estimates the company's size to be around 150 employees and it has been suggested that a significant proportion have been impacted.

Kotaku broke the news today and received confirmation from Hangar 13 parent company 2K Games. 2K said "[We] can confirm that there have been staff reductions at Hangar 13 in order to ensure that the studio's resources are properly aligned with its long-term development plans. These reductions will not influence 2K's ability to create and deliver its products that are currently in development. We never take these matters lightly, and are working with the affected employees to support them and explore potential opportunities throughout our organization."

Ever since Mafia III's release, Hangar 13 has worked on a handful of Mafia add-ons that released in the first half of 2017. More recently, it's said that the studio has been focused on prototypes of its next project. As always, we wish the best for all of the affected Hangar 13 employees.

News:: Find anything good in Steam's Lunar New Year sale?

Even if you don't feel like loading up on cheap Steam games right now, it's worth popping over to the Lunar New Year Sale to see some cute dogs. They even have a plump little Sif from Dark Souls!

The sale runs today through Monday, February 19. As far as personal recommendations, I'll just point to Nioh, which is down to $35. You could easily pour hundreds of hours into Team Ninja's yokai-busting samurai action-RPG, and this version also comes with all three DLC packs. It's a beast.

Alongside the deals, Valve has reworked Steam's wishlist feature. It feels crowded at a glance but the idea is to give users more control. You can filter your wishlist based on price, discount amount, genre, and tags. It's also now possible to exclude Early Access, pre-release, and VR-only games via a toggle.

If you see anything on sale that you think we should jump on, give us a shout.

News:: What the Golf? is everything I love about sports games

What the Golf? bills itself as "the golf game for people who don't play golf." It's spot on.

One quick scroll through this gif-filled about page is all you'll need to know if this is your type of silly, experimental take on sports. You can golf a human. Or a horse! It also has bowling and soccer reimagined as golf. How about first-person golfing? Golf platforming? There's even golf boss battles.

I'm so down with this anything-goes, almost game-jam-like vibe.

Developer Triband is seeking funding through Fig with a base goal set at a modest $50,000. Assuming that goes well -- and I really think it will -- then it'll move onto stretch goals at $65,000 (impossible golf challenges), $100,000 (local multiplayer battle), and $200,00 (a golf course level editor).

What the Golf? is currently planned for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Triband is "talking to platforms about the possibilities [of console ports], but it is not the primary focus."

News:: Rocket League's Diamond players complained, so now they're getting shinier wheels

As far as Rocket League's competitive tiers go, Diamond is toward the top. It's not Champion (everyone wants to be Champion), but it takes a good bit of dedication and time to get there. According to this breakdown of the most recent competitive season, Diamond-or-better players are in the top 3.23% to 10.59% depending on which playlist they favor.

That's why some people were none too pleased with their Season 6 reward. Traditionally, rewards get more ornate the higher the rank. Season 3's four sets of wheels are a good example. However, Season 6's Diamond wheels don't stand out in the same way. Here's what they look like in-game:

News:: Arnold Schwarzenegger is also in the Kung Fury sequel, of course

If the presence of David Hasselhoff in the feature length Kung Fury wasn't enough 1980s nostalgia fetish fuel for you, perhaps Arnie will fill in some gaps. Shortly after Michael Fassbender was confirmed to star in the film project, THR also reports that former California Governor and former Mr. Freeze Arnold Schwarzenegger will also appear, playing the United States President.

Arnold as president is a joke that has been played out at this point, but perhaps we're past the moratorium seeing how the gag from The Simpsons Movie was over ten years ago. As previously reported, the director, writer and lead actor of the original Kung Fury short, David Sandberg, is said to be returning in all of those roles for the feature length follow-up.

News:: Virtuos is handling the Switch port of Dark Souls: Remastered

Every so often I remember that we're getting a remaster of Dark Souls in May and I just have to smile.

In the case of the Nintendo Switch version, it's come to light (courtesy of the Australian Classification Board) that Virtuos is handling the port. Previously, the company brought L.A. Noire to Switch. As for the other console versions, it's still believed that QLOC is lending From Software a hand.

It's a light detail, without a doubt, but I suppose I'm just that desperate for more Remastered screenshots, info, or really anything. It's almost a given that I'll end up buying this twice -- once on Switch for portability, and once more on PS4 or PC for the better visual fidelity and frame rate.

News:: Review: Fe

What little we've known about Fe has seemed cleverly wrapped in enigma, like this forest is hiding mysteries that are just begging to be solved. That's half true. There's something to uncover at nearly every turn in Fe but nothing ever becomes any more clear.

Instead, Fe plays like a paint-by-numbers of stylish artsy games. It technically has a lot of the traits of a title that's poised for critical success. But all of that never jells in a way that rises above the expectation of the mystery. It's far easier to get physically lost in this forest than it is to get lost in an immersive sense.

News:: Warhammer: Vermintide 2 hits PC on March 8

March 8, 2018 will be a day of slicing and dicing. That's when Fatshark's co-op action game Warhammer: Vermintide 2 will appear on PC, with the Xbox One and PS4 versions coming later.

Along with the usual Skaven horde, you'll also have to face Chaos in this sequel.

There are five playable heroes (along with 15 different careers for further specialization) and Vermintide 2's Heroic Deeds System will conjure up quests that "dramatically alter enemy composition, level settings, weapon use, and mission objectives." Here's a brief preview of the Bounty Hunter:

This looks like such a good stress reliever!

News:: PlayStation VR bundles are on sale again

Sony has brought back a round of discounts on PlayStation VR bundles that are worth a look.

The two main bundles come with PlayStation VR 2.0, which is what you'll likely want to go for if you held off this long. The revised model has HDR pass-through (so you don't have to fuss with any cables if you use an HDR-capable display) and a better-placed headphone jack and audio controls.

  • PlayStation VR + PS Camera + DOOM VFR ($299.99) (Regularly $399.99)
  • PlayStation VR + PS Camera + two Move controllers + Skyrim VR ($349.99) (Regularly $449.99)

Additionally, Sony will offer the standalone PSVR headset for just $200.

These deals run from Sunday, February 18 through Saturday, March 3 at participating US retailers.

News:: Final Ready Player One trailer sure has a lot of stuff going on

To be honest, I kind of forgot Ready Player One was coming out soon. I somehow missed every trailer, but here's the final one for its upcoming March release. There's a lot to absorb here, namely each of its references to pop culture such as Jurassic Park's T-Rex, Back to the Future's DeLorean, and even video games exist in this world like Mario Kart (which is used in the dialogue, off-puttingly enough) and Halo.

There's a certain kind of fan out there that will definitely appreciate toys bashing against one another on-screen, but unless Steven Spielberg can translate all of this and deliver a solid base to hold all of this together I'm not sure how this will work for everyone else.

It's almost like this is everything and nothing, you know?

News:: Gwent is adding a much-requested draft mode

I haven't played much of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, mostly due to my fatigue from card games that hinge on random packs. I don't mind keeping up with the meta with multiple games, it's just that having to grind up paltry amounts of currency to get the cards I want gets old after a while if I'm doing it in multiple loot box (read: random card packs) supported titles.

That's partially what piqued my interest in the new draft-based arena mode just unveiled yesterday via developer CD Projekt Red's Twitch stream. Hosted by Gaunter O'Dimm (of Witcher 3 DLC fame) you'll draft cards from the entire library of Gwent, picking singles just like a real-life Magic (MTG) draft. There's just one catch, you'll need 150 currency (ore) or $1.99 for each playthrough -- which can be anywhere from multiple wins to three deaths. You'll get one "keg" (loot box) after playing, even if you lose, with more prizes doled out to winners.

Draft will make its way to Gwent at some point this year. Arena modes aren't new even for digital card games, but I might check it out more once its added.

News:: Shaq Fu mastered martial arts, but it hasn't mastered announcing a firm release date

Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn, a second crack at what's infamously considered one of the worst games ever, is probably going to be better than its predecessor. It's not a high bar to clear, and it'd take a staggering lack of self-awareness to revive something this reviled only to somehow make it worse. That suspicion should be confirmed soon enough.

Shaq's video game redemption tour starts sometime in the spring. But, like many of the big man's free throws, it bricked the execution. Despite spring being right around the corner, we don't actually know when Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn will launch. Sometime before June, I guess.

Accompanying the time frame announcement is today's reveal that Wired Productions has signed on as a publisher -- likely to help with the physical version. As of right now, that edition is going for $35 on Wired's store. Of course, a bunch of NBA Playgrounds Switch players won't have to worry about that. Anyone who owned the Switch version of NBA Playgrounds before June 10, 2017 is getting a free copy of Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn as a make-good for the frustratingly-slow implementation of online multiplayer.

News:: New release PC deals: 18% off Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy XV, and more

Another week, another round of sales on upcoming games. While 2017 didn't exactly grace us with easy to use pre-order discounts (publishers were more strict on pricing than previous years), thus far in 2018 things seems to be returning to the "norm" of years past where digital PC games often have strong incentives for pre-order. In recent weeks we've had a flurry of releases, including this week's Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and for today we have the 3D remake of Secret of Mana.

While Secret of Mana isn't knocking it out of the park in terms of critic reviews, for fans of the title wishing for a bit of nostalgia, you can pick up the Steam copy for 18% off at GMG. Also available for a limited time with the site-wide discount code are some other upcoming games in March including Final Fantasy XV: Windows Edition, Surviving Mars, and Far Cry 5.

Accompanying these new release deals are also some recent release titles that net 22% off in lieu of the more standard 20% discount. This includes My Time at Portia (for those Stardew Valley fans looking for something new), Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, and Battalion 1944. Note that the 22% off code is limited time and will expire tomorrow night at 7PM Eastern.

News:: Daisuke Ishiwatari, creator of Guilty Gear, opens up about Arc's legacy, his crazy inspirations, and the Switch

Daisuke Ishiwatari is a tireless man. If you haven't seen the toco toco game creator special on him, watch it immediately...I'll wait. That mini-documentary was two years ago, but when asked how long he was interested in making games, just yesterday he told me: "until I die."

Ishiwatari has been with Arc System Works for over two decades, and has helped shape the image of the company, produced some of its best games, and assisted in growing Arc's presence at major fighting game events like EVO. Here are a few of his thoughts on where the company can grow and what the future holds.

News:: Shroud of the Avatar, spiritual successor to Ultima, will finally release next month

Richard Garriott, otherwise known as Lord British, has been working on a spiritual successor to the Ultima series for quite some time now. Our last post about the game was nearly five years ago, but the title has been available on Steam Early Access since 2014. After all these years of waiting, Shroud of the Avatar will finally be leaving Early Access on March 27, 2018. You'll be able to play the game on PC, Mac and Linux. If you'd like to try the game out, a free trial is now available from the official website.

The game had a successful Kickstarter way back when that raised nearly $2 million and has been doing fairly well for itself over the intervening years. I actually got to speak with Richard Garriott at RTX last summer, but I wasn't sure what to do with my interview. He's a super nice guy (and incredibly nerdy), but we mostly spoke about the history of the genre and how EA screwed him over on Ultima.

Hopefully for him and fans of his seminal series, Shroud lives up to the hype.

News:: It appears as if that Mega Man X Legacy Collection is actually going to be two collections

On that lovely Mega Man anniversary stream where we got wind of Mega Man 11 and multiple collection releases (mostly on Switch), one little tidbit was left out -- exactly how the Mega Man X collection would be distributed.

Many of us assumed that like the original legacy releases they'd be split up into two games, and it looks like we're right. According to the Australian Classification Board it will indeed be two separate iterations as it approaches a release later this year on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.

This whole thing has me thinking that we might see a Mega Man X9 if the whole 11 thing goes well. Hell, we might even see a game that links the two and swaps between timelines and visual styles? A [mega] man can dream!

News:: Sony drops PlayStation VR prices as low as $200

Sony thinks its holiday PlayStation VR discounts were a success, so it's bringing them back now that it wants to clear some end-of-winter stock. The company is running a new promo that drops PSVR prices by $100 across the board between February 18th and March 3rd. The sweetest deal by far is the Gran Turismo Sport bundle -- you can get the racing game, a PSVR headset and the requisite camera for $200. You can also buy just the headset for $200, although that won't make much sense unless you just can't find the GTS pack.

News:: Crowdfunded ‘Shaq-Fu’ revival game finally comes out this spring

The early '90s made a bad habit out of terrible action games cashing in on brands and celebrities. One of the latter was Shaq Fu, which has become a punchline in Worst Games of All Time lists for franchising out NBA star Shaquille O'Neil into a bad fighter filled with a confusing mish-mash of myths. Instead of ruin, some saw kitschy promise, and a revival was successfully crowdfunded in 2014. Friends who collectively sunk over $450,000 into this dream, your time is coming. Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn will arrive for PC and consoles (including the Switch) this spring.

News:: Xbox Live Gold is free this weekend along with a bunch of game trials

Have no plans for this weekend? Why not stay home and check out some NBA 2K18 on Xbox One? Don't have a real interest in sports games? You can also download Overwatch or Rainbow Six Siege and get to shooting. But wait, don't those require Xbox Live Gold to experience all the fun? Why yes, they do, but Microsoft has a nice surprise waiting for you, non-subscriber!

Starting today and lasting until February 18 at 11:59 pm PST, anyone with an Xbox 360 or Xbox One will get free multiplayer to play anything their heart desires. The aforementioned three games will be available as trials for players with Xbox One's, regardless of whether they are currently subscribed or not. This could make for some great weekend plans, providing you actually have the hardware necessary.

At least if you don't own an Xbox Live, Overwatch and Rainbow Six will still have free play weekends on their other available platforms. I know that isn't a replacement for seeing LeBron James' digital visage, but I'll take it.

News:: You can party chat with your smartphone on Xbox One now

Onboard console has always had competition from myriad third-party apps. It seems like pretty much every event I'm a part of, whether it's on a PC or a console, is hosted on Discord these days. Before it was Ventrilo or TeamSpeak, or Trillian.

But modern day consoles have been racing to catch up, and now Microsoft has announced a new solution to attempt to woo people away from the above. According to Major Nelson, the official Xbox app has been updated and now allows party chat straight through the app. Just hook up a mic or use the built-in one with your phone and you're good. The app has been tested through various Insider programs for a few months so it should be pretty sound at this point.

I hope that when Nintendo updates its online infrastructure later this year it actually adds native chat on the Switch -- as it started backward with smartphone chat.

News:: BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle adds Persona 4's Kanji, BlazBlue's Platinum, and UNIEL's Orie (as DLC)

The launch roster of BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle may be set, but for those interested in the other 20 characters coming as DLC still have plenty of character reveals to look forward to up until its full release in June.

Joining the DLC half of the roster is BlazBlue's Platinum The Trinity, Persona 4 Arena's Kanji Tatsumi, and Under Night In-Birth's Orie (the goodest girl). These characters look fine, but it's all going to come down to pricing.

Everyone who's going to purchase the DLC has already made up their minds (including me because I'm a mark with disposable income), but selling the base title at a lesser price will not make paying for these extra characters feel less iffy if the DLC prices aren't just the right amount.

Regardless, BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle hits PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch June 5. What would be a good price for you? Or are you waiting for the ethereal "complete edition"?
