News::Impressions: Awakening: The Art of Halo 4

Art books have been around for a long time, and they take on many different styles and formats. Titan Books, in conjunction with Microsoft Studios and 343 Industries, has put together a fantastic addition to any Halo fans’ collection in the form of Awakening: The Art of Halo 4 Enhanced Edition for iOS devices.

I am a videogame art nerd, through and through, so I have my fair share of physical and digital artbooks. While receiving a digital artbook along with a game that you have been waiting patiently for is a good bonus, it just doesn’t compare to having a physical copy in your hands. There is something much more personal and engrossing about flipping through a heavy tome of collected artwork, taking your time to pick out the small details strewn about the paintings and reading each small commentary piece to help you get a better understanding of the artist’s mindset.

When the opportunity came up to take a closer look at this digital artbook, I was skeptical that it could hold my attention for more than one sitting. I am very happy to state that this was not the case.

News::Are Consoles Holding Back The True Potential of Video Games?

MP1st - "...This is where I see consoles beginning to hold back innovation in gaming. The consoles are designed to last for 7-10 years, which is great as far as long term electronics investment is concerned. The only problem is, the hardware market cycles almost every 2 years. While the locked down and uniform nature of a console certainly gives developers a lot of leeway and to push its hardware as far as it can go, it can still only go so far."

News::Review: Best Park In the Universe - Regular Show

Cartoon Network hasn't been doing a very good job with its videogame adaptations of Adventure Time and Regular Show. Barring one decent (but very brief) romp on the DS, the two properties have disappointed fans left and right on the iOS platform, only to leave them wanting more.

Next up on the chopping block is the beat-'em-up Best Park In the Universe - Regular Show, which seeks to marry one of the oldest genres in the business with the magical tandem of Mordecai and Rigby.

News::Curious platformer Contrast also hitting PSN and XBLA

Joining the already announced PC version, Compulsion Games has signed on with Focus Home Interactive to bring its hybrid 2D/3D puzzle platformer Contrast to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network later this year.

Set in the 1920s, Contrast comes across as a combination of film noir and vaudeville. Check out this teaser trailer to see what I mean. Gameplay is described as "leveraging light sources and manipulating real-world objects to affect the shadows placement, depth, height and overall weighting to solve mind-bending puzzles."

While the shadow concept has been explored before, and I'm worried that the platforming itself might be somewhat loose, there's enough going on here that this looks worth keeping an eye on.

News::The Lighter Side of Gaming: Penning The Parable (TheBGB Review)

One of the many important factors of video game development is the story. Without a story, the game has no goal; no objectives for the players to complete. The story can be as simple as rescue the princess or as complex as rescue your reality tearing daughter from an alternate dimension version of yourself within a city in the clouds. As long as there is a story, there is a reason for playing. But just how much story is too much? How much control should be taken away from the player in order to advance the story?

News::Renegade Kid's Treasurenauts looks retro-tastic

[Update: I've confirmed with developer Jools Watsham that the game does feature local multiplayer for up to two players, with a Download Play option that only requires one copy of Treasurenauts.]

Fresh off of its impending Mutant Mudds Deluxe release for the Wii U, Renegade Kid has just announced a new game -- Treasurenauts for the Nintendo 3DS. Not a whole lot is known at this time, but the game seems to be a retro platformer, possibly with multiplayer elements.

Only a portion of the cast has been revealed, as an Indiana Jones type, a Tiki-guy, and a Ninja adorn one of the three screens provided by developer Jools Watsham. From what I can tell in the screenshots, the game will be focused on loot collection with a "total" cash goal in mind across multiple levels, potentially earning you more upgrades for each character through an in-game shop.

For now we can only speculate, but there will be more info available after the exclusive reveal in the third issue of Nintendo Force magazine.

News::The Analog Shtick | Review: Call of Juarez: Gunslinger Far From The Cartel

After the series unfortunate outing in modern-day Mexico in 2011s The Cartel, its no wonder people were less-than optimistic about the announcement that Call of Juarez would be going back to its old-west roots. With the oldest two games having not aged particularly well, and The Cartel having been such a disaster, there wasnt much hope that Gunslinger would become anything more than a poor cash-in on the franchises name. Polygon: "Resident Evil: Revelations proves that somewhere in its DNA, Capcom still has an understanding of how to make this series work. Both raid mode and Revelations' single-player emanate a self-certainty that's increasingly rare in the series. It nails both the survival-horror tension of old-school Resident Evil and the bombastic setpieces of modern Resident Evil, and it rarely screws up in the process. It's frustrating that "good" has become an unexpected reaction for me to the Resident Evil franchise, but if Revelations is any indication, there's still an opportunity to turn that around."

News::In-depth Review: Call of Juarez: Gunslinger - Electronic Theatre

Call of Juarez has undeniably been one of this generations most turbulent franchises. The original title was an interesting yet malnourished experience, while the sequel Bound in Blood, was a fantastic old west experience unlike any which had been seen before. The third title however, was a step too far, not only attempting to recreate the winning formula in modern times (which would have been a creative idea had it worked) but also neutering the enjoyment. Call of Juarez had climbed from respectable to top tier and fallen into disarray in just three outings; exactly where it would go from here was anyones guess.

News::Call of Juarez: Gunslinger Review | WGTC

Chad from We Got This Covered wrote: Its surprising how little the gaming industry makes use of the rich source material found within the historical Wild West. The time of cowboys, saloons, six shooters and tumbleweeds is a goldmine of interesting characters, both good and bad, not to mention settings and storylines. In fact, its almost a shame that we dont get many Western-inspired video games these days, although it could be said that the lack of over-saturation is a good thing. Then again, at least some companies have been attempting to pay homage to that era, providing us with a limited amount of great and memorable experiences like Sunset Riders, Red Dead Redemption, GUN and the above-average Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. There arent too many to speak of, of course, but this very week has added one new title to that list of notables. That would be Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, the downloadable Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network and PC game from Techland and Ubisoft.

News::Sanctum 2 developers continue to patch the game

The developers of Sanctum 2 are really taking criticism to heart. As Patrick spoke about in his review, he was frustrated that resources would drop at each level's core, introducing a level of tedium brought about by running back and forth constantly. Also, the lack of resource sharing between players is frustrating, since you often times will find people stealing materials, and the lack of feedback when upgrading towers was puzzling.

Thankfully, Coffee Stain Studios has addressed all of these major issues in today's patch. Players now automatically gain resources at the end of each round (thus, also avoiding the theft of materials from others), you can now share resources with each other, and tower upgrade requirements are now displayed on screen.

This isn't the first major patch either, as less than a week after release, Coffee Stain was hard at work addressing some other issues, despite the fact that they're already working on DLC for the game. I admire such tenacity, and it's nice to see a studio actually listen to their fans. I would like a lot more fundamental emphasis on tower defense compared to the FPS aspect that Sanctum 2 brought to the table personally, but hopefully the developers will continue to fine tune their game and make it even better.
