News::Doom: Celebrating 20 Years of BFG

Erik writes, "At the time Doom was first released in 1993, I was way too young to even be playing console games. When I eventually grew old enough to be able to handle using a mouse and keyboard to play games, Doom was there to guide me. I remember the first time I saw Doom in action, was on my fathers computer when he sat me down and said Play this. Im not too sure where my dad got that copy of Doom from or what compelled him to let his young son play the ultra-violent game, but Im sure as hell glad that he did. Initially the game scared the hell out of me, with its new (to me) control scheme, dozens of demons and the level design, but once I got familiar with it, I played it more than my consoles. Since it was the shareware version, I only got to play the first episode, but you can bet I played the crap out of that first episode. While I was disappointed I never got to play the other episodes, that didnt stop me from getting my daily dose of Pinky killing action in after...

News::Nice: Catacomb Kids will be funded on Kickstarter

The Kickstarter for Catacomb Kids will be funded when the campaign closes in approximately a day's time. Designer FourbitFriday has release a couple of video demonstrations since we last checked in with this roguelike platformer, the newest of which can be seen above.

The attention to detail is impressive. As shown in the walkthrough, you can light up a boulder with fire magic and push it into water to cause it to boil, cooking dangerous fish alive and making an otherwise poisonous mushroom edible. Some rather neat systems to tinker around with.

Then we get to an earlier video, embedded below, that shows the almost laughable versatility of a small rock. Crazy. It's not too late to contribute to the crowdfunding drive if you like what you see here. I certainly do.

News::Call of Duty Didn't Win Best Shooter Again? About Time

Wade Westfall writes: If you've ever taken the time to check through this blog, then you would probably learn two things about me. 1. I really like Majora's Mask 2. I really hate the Call of Duty franchise I've ranted about this before, so I'll keep it short. It's not so much Call of Duty in itself that I can't stand. Modern Warfare was released that I played the game pretty consistently. But over the years a single game wears itself out, and that's what the entire Call of Duty franchise is: A single game with a yearly $60 map pack.

News::Shovel Knight Preview: Building on Mega Man and Zelda 2 | GameZone

GameZone: "Shovel Knight became quite the Kickstarter success, more than tripling its $75,000 goal during the month-long pledge period. In that time, seemingly countless fans expressed their interest in the game, and it was obvious that developer Yacht Club Games had a potentially winning formula. By drawing inspiration from Capcom's famed Mega Man franchise, Shovel Knight has managed to gain the attention of indie game aficionados and old school NES lovers. After spending some time with the game myself, I can attest to its unbridled pixelated charm and wonderful retro challenge."

News::Review: Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians

Genre blending is becoming more and more common as developers explore different gameplay styles. As with puzzle and role-playing, rhythm elements are often folded into otherwise unrelated games to various degrees.

BeatBuddy: Tale of the Guardians puts quite a bit of focus on the musical gameplay. It is sometimes about exploration, sometimes features puzzles, sometimes requires combat action, but is always considering how those affect the overall audio character. Music is the entree here, and everything else serves as garnish.

News::Speedball 2 HD Review | Hardcore Gamer

These days pretty much every sports game is licensed with a real world league and aims to be more or less a simulation of the actual sport. Back in the 90s, however, video game sports were much more creative. You had games like Mutant League Football and Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball which took real sports and added a unique video game twist. Then you had things like Speedball, which was a game that basically created its own cyberpunk sport that was a mix between hockey and handball. A sequel, Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe was released in 1990 on many of the various home consoles and computers of the time, and was just recently given the HD treatment with the release of Speedball 2 HD on Steam.

A new Telltale Games franchise is coming. While The Walking Dead put Telltale Games on the map, their follow-up, The Wolf Among Us, has proven that at least initially the studio's storytelling prowess is no fluke. Following a set of rumors, the developer confirmed at the Spike VGX 2013 Awards on Friday that one of their next two projects will take them to Westeros, George R. R. Martin's world that, though it has steadily gained a following, has yet to truly leave its mark on video games.

News::Eurogamer: "A future that has a history": Introducing No Man's Sky

Eurogamer writes: If you're on Mars next October you should probably be careful. There's a comet swinging past - comet Siding Spring - and while it's unlikely to connect with Big Red itself, it will bring glittering meteors spinning in its wake. Lots of meteors, actually - some of which - and I shivered when I read this line on the front page of the New Scientist website - "could pose a danger to orbiting spacecraft." That's a wonderful phrase, but I'm afraid I've turned it over a few times and the thrill of it quickly gives way to disappointment. You won't be on Mars next October, not with the best will in the world, even if you called in absolutely every favour you had coming to you. And those orbiting spacecraft? They won't be carrying any humans either. When it comes to outer space, we're not onto our training wheels yet. We don't even know what training wheels look like - and when we do find out, the things they entail will probably briskly kill us with radiation.
