News:: Contest: We're giving away 10 copies of Genital Jousting. Also, cocks!

Every once in a while something comes along that's so remarkably on-brand for us that it's hard for us to say no. We long for the opportunity to get our hands on it, and savor every last drop. Genital Jousting, a game where you play as a dick with a butthole, is the best example of this.

In his review, Peter says, "Genital Jousting is crude, for certain, but it showcases how imaginative and creative gaming can truly be. When I was a child, I never thought I’d have the fortune of playing as a flaccid dick in a game, but look where we are." If that doesn't get you nice and turgid for this game, nothing will.

Except for this.

News:: 50 Shades: Porn afraid to be porn

I don't think I'm really offending anyone when I say that the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy is one of the worst trilogies to ever happen to cinemas. It's rare to see a story told where every installment is awful from beginning to end, but for entirely different ways. Say what you will about the Transformers movies, and you can say a lot about them, but at least those movies are interesting to dissect. Hell, Lindsey Ellis has been making an entire series going over each individual reason why the Transformers movies are so fascinatingly awful.

If a person watched one of the 50 Shades of Grey movies and was asked afterwards why the movie wasn't good, they'll throw out one of several reasons why. There are no characters. The story is terrible. The soundtrack is in your face and tries to sell whatever new pop song is making the rounds. Nothing happens over the span of nearly two hours. The sex scenes are amazingly unsexy. Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson have no chemistry. All of these are true, but they're systemic of the main problem with 50 Shades of Grey as a movie franchise.

50 Shades of Grey tries to be accessible porn. Milquetoast porn. Porn without any bite, eroticism, and most importantly, porn that has a story. So before we can talk about why the movie's suck more than Anastasia Steele, we need to talk about the books. Hoo boy.

From the beginning, 50 Shades of Grey was associated as soft-core mom porn. It was porn that your mom read in her book club. It was something that was publicly known and made fun of on the internet, but that reputation helped solidify its place in pop culture. Hell, I used to gather around with a bunch of theatre friends when the book first came out and we read the sex scenes in various character voices. Droopy Dog, Barack Obama, Shaggy, everyone got a chance to narrate the BDSM sex scenes and cause tons of laughter for everyone. 50 Shades of Grey had a reputation, and by God did it stick to it.

I understand why the series took off with that particular demographic. 50 Shades of Grey was the perfect escapist fantasy for women. It stars a young woman who leads a boring life who meets this billionaire that she starts to fall for, he becomes attached to her and does kinky as hell things to her, she enjoys it, wants to become a part of his life, and slowly starts to change him into a better person while still keeping all of the freaky sex, money, and luxurious life style. Believe me, I get it. There's nothing wrong with escapist fantasy for women, just as there's nothing wrong with escapist fantasy for men. We all want to be the good looking, smart, shredded guy who gets the girl and saves the world. To condemn 50 Shades of Grey based on it's premise is shallow in my opinion. If you were a women, wouldn't you want to be married to a billionaire who gave you some of the best sex of your life?

But here's an important fact to remember. Back when I narrated the sex scenes with some friends? We ONLY read the sex scenes aloud. We didn't care about the plot of the book or the struggles of the characters. It was porn. If you've ever watched porn, man or woman, can you honestly say that you cared about the story that the actors went through. The development that wasn't related to their genitals? Probably not. You watched porn for the sex, plain and simple. People enjoyed reading 50 Shades of Grey for the sex scenes. They worked so well in the books because E L James provided the framework for you to insert your own fantasy into the story. Your imagination did the heavy lifting in depicting how the sex scenes were shown in your mind. They could have been mild, or they could have been the steamiest fantasy that you've ever encountered.

When you transition a product from one medium to another, you're going to encounter some problems to say the least. In the case of books becoming movies, a producer needs to ask questions like "What scenes need to be cut?," "What scenes need to be added?," but most importantly "How is this going to look on film?" But when you start to think of an answer to that final question, all of the problems start to pop up.

50 Shades of Grey is soft-core porn. It's erotica. The sex scenes have been built up by the readers as being these amazing, spectacular visions of pleasure, but now you have to put it on screen. You need to get actors involved. The movie needs to get a rating. You can't just put porn in theatres, that'd be career suicide. So in order to make bank at the box office, the producers make the only rational decision they can make. They need to make the sex scenes tamer. They need to make them tame enough so that they can still get the R rating an ensure that their movie can screen in theatres.

And there's your main problem. You toned down something that should not have been toned down. Sex was the original focus in the novels, and when that isn't the focus of the movies, the only thing that can be the focus are the characters and the plot. What I'm trying to get at is the 50 Shades of Grey movies made the immortal sin of all porn and put the story before the titillation. Characters come first, completely unintended pun comes second.

So when people look at the poor characters and the nonsensical plot developments of the trilogy and call them out rightfully as being awful, it's because the weakest element of the novels was put front and center. I mean, have you read the part of the books that weren't surrounding sex and BDSM? They're unreadable! "All of my worst fears packaged neatly into one sentence now exorcised." What the hell does that even mean?

It says a lot that the only reason why 50 Shades Freed is the best in the trilogy (and that's not a big compliment really) is because there are at least a handful of sex scenes on display. I think we got close to ten scenes this time, and while they don't last for all that long, and don't do enough to get anyone aroused, one could argue that they take up about 5-10% of the movie. Okay, that's not a whole lot, but it's still more than the previous two movies. It tried so hard to give in to the sex, but it couldn't quite reach it. Instead we get an hour and a half of watching Anastasia and Christian go vacationing around the world with their armada of Audi cars with an unhealthy amount of Oedipal subtext.

But there is a way to redeem the series. I mean, there was a way because now that the trilogy is done there's no going back unless someone wants to reboot this and no one in their right mind is that evil to do that, but there was a way to save the franchise. It might not have made it good, but it would have at least earned my respect.

50 Shades of Grey should have gone NC-17.

I know that may sound impossible given today's current film climate. I mean, when was the last time you heard of an NC-17 movie being released in theatres? Actually, it's not all that uncommon for movies to be rated NC-17. It's just that after they get that rating, studios decide to edit down the content in order to give it an R rating. Movies like Sausage Party and Evil Dead 2 all originally received NC-17 ratings, but the producers edited the movie afterwards in order to make sure that it got an R rating and could screen at most theatres. Keep in mind that a lot of mainstream movie theatres don't want to screen NC-17 movies for fear of investing into something that's going to receive little payoff as well as ruin their "family friendly" image. Remember, NC-17 usually means incredible violence or porn. That's why you'll see "Unrated" or "Uncensored" versions of comedies or horror movies on home video. Those were the original NC-17 versions most of the time, got edited for theatres, then were released in their original glory on DVD and Blu-ray.

Can NC-17 movies make a profit though? For movies that decide to keep an NC-17 rating, chances are that the odds are pretty low, but not impossible. Blue is the Warmest Color and Showgirls are NC-17 movies that released with an NC-17 rating and both made a pretty nice sum of change. Both movies made around $20 million each while working with a small budget, usually around $4-5 million. Both movies made a profit at the end of the day, which is exactly what studio executives want.

The budget for the 50 Shades of Grey movies are pretty large, totaling at $150 million between all three of them. When you actually watch the movies, all the budget is really used for is to create elaborate sets. Yes, the sets look great and they're shot great, but the franchise is also pretty intent on showing Audi cars, elegant fashion lines, jewelry, and vacationing to a whole bunch of different venues. I know that those moments are integral to the series, but the franchise could certainly do without the fleet of Audi's on full display paying for a ridiculous soundtrack that has only pop songs from the hottest artists in it. You can make this franchise on a much smaller budget.

And would people go see an NC-17 50 Shades movie? I think so. I think that if you have a series that is established erotica with sex scenes being the primary selling point, you'll get an audience in. The books have earned over $95 million in 2013 before the films came out, so there is already an established fan base, plus I'm pretty certain that the majority of those fans are over 17 years old. Plus those are just the numbers from 2013. They've probably doubled by this point, expanding the reach of the series exponentially. There's a solid chance for it to work. You have the audience, you'll be able to satisfy them, and I'll at least be able to respect a modern NC-17 film trilogy existing in general.

But would that happen? No. Money is money, and if you can take a risque series and dull it down enough to get audiences into seats, that's all that matters. Yes, 50 Shades of Grey could make money as an NC-17 series, but it wouldn't be enough when it could have made MOAR MONEY as an R rated series. Who cares if we neuter the material as long as they get money off of it? I know this was all just one giant think experiment, but I firmly believe that anything can be made good. Yes, even one of the worst franchises in modern cinema, but it could have been better. Is it likely that could have happened?

No. Not at all.

News:: Modders have already fixed Kingdom Come: Deliverance's saving and lockpicking

It sure didn't take the modding community long to capitalize on two of Kingdom Come: Deliverance's biggest inconveniences. Three days after release and there are already mods that alter the save system and the lockpicking.

One of the most contentious mechanics in Kingdom Come: Deliverance deals with saving. In order to manually save, players have to consume a "Saviour Schnapps" -- a liquor that's both expensive and addictive. It's meant to keep from spamming saves and it adds some heft to possibly-poor decisions. But, with a not-always-reliable autosave system, people have found themselves wishing for a more palatable option.

Almost immediately, someone came up with an unlimited saves mod. It seemingly does exactly what it says -- it allows for unlimited saving without any real trade-off. Simple as that.

The lockpicking is a bit more convoluted. In order to pick locks, you need to find a specific part of a circle (which represents the whole lock). Then, once in the appropriate place, you rotate the lock while moving the cursor to keep it positioned at that invisible spot. It can be confusing keeping track of exactly where on the circle the cursor is supposed to stay.

Again, modders to the rescue. Without functionally changing how any of the lockpicking works, someone developed a simple mod that breaks the lock up into 12 different sections -- much like spokes on a wheel. This serves as a visual aid so that players can follow that specific section rather than guesstimate where it moved to. Another reasonable solution to make things just a little more convenient.

News:: Atari will use cryptocurrency to bolster its online gambling business

In its latest bid for relevance, Atari is glomming onto the cryptocurrency craze. The company is hoping to bolster its gambling business in Europe with Atari Token, according to Bloomberg. "Our aim is to take strategic positions with a limited cash risk, in order to best create value with the assets and Atari brand," CEO Frederic Chesnais noted in a release. Like Kodak and, err, Long Island Iced Tea before it, the stock market has responded favorably to the news, pushing Atari share prices up by over 60 percent after the company announced its intent to jump into cryptocurrency. Maybe now the company can afford to tell people what it's going to include in the Ataribox.

News:: Bloggers wanted: The heel-turn

Last week, in the quick posts of Destructoid's community, we saw the rise and fall of community manager Wesley J. Russow. He rose to prominence with his immutable power, only to see it come crashing down as the working class clambered beneath him and tore him down. Truly, the life and times of Westopher G. Raggamuffins was a lesson in live fast, burn hot, crash spectacularly.

News:: Liar Princess and the Blind Prince makes a good first impression

Sometimes, all you need is an image or a piece of artwork to decide right then and there that you need to follow a game. That's exactly how it went down for me with Liar Princess and the Blind Prince, an upcoming PS4, PS Vita, and Nintendo Switch game from Nippon Ichi Software. It's gorgeous.

The game is about a wolf-turned-princess guiding a blind prince through a forest.

Liar Princess isn't confirmed for the West just yet, but it's releasing in Japan on May 31, 2018. So if it is localized, it might not be too terribly far off. Seems like a perfect little Vita/Switch game.

News:: Where the Water Tastes Like Wine hits the road on February 28

Oh, the places you'll go and oh, the people you'll meet. That's the point of Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, a Depression-era excursion across rural America as you soak in the folklore of the countryside. Also, you're a skeleton.

This one should be on the radar of anyone who values storytelling in video games. While there are a lot of questions surrounding Where the Water Tastes Like Wine (as with any game like this), they should get cleared up soon. It was recently announced that it'll release on February 28 on PC and Mac for $20.

We should have our verdict on Water/Wine sometime around launch. If you want something now, Darren has a good writeup from last PAX West.

News:: GOG has one free game and lots of cheap games right now

Video game playing: It can be free sometimes! (Disregarding the cost to own the equipment to run the games, the mostly-nominal uptick in your electricity bill, the opportunity cost of not doing something where you could've made a lot of money like inventing an app or franchising a TGI Friday's, and any emotional toll from net negative experiences outweighing net positive experiences.)

Hell yeah, everyone loves free video games! GOG has another freebie as a complement to its currently-running Chinese New Year Sale. Anyone with a GOG account and the willingness to click like one button can nab 2015 strategy game Dungeons 2 at no charge. It's available for the next 46-ish hours.

Anyone with the willingness to spend a little coin might be interested in the 500-some titles that are discounted. Remember: Everything GOG is DRM-free. The event runs until February 20 at 3pm Pacific. Head here to nab Dungeons 2 and/or to check out the sale. It's the year of the dog so everything's gonna be a-okay, friends.

News:: Nightdive Studios puts System Shock on 'hiatus'

The team behind the upcoming System Shock remake is in a tough spot. After raising $1.35 million in funding for the game on Kickstarter back in 2016, Nightdive Studios has now paused production.

"I have put the team on a hiatus while we reassess our path so that we can return to our vision," wrote CEO Stephen Kick in a message to backers. "We are taking a break, but NOT ending the project."

Here's how Kick explained the decision:

"Maybe we were too successful. Maybe we lost our focus. The vision began to change. We moved from a Remaster to a completely new game. We shifted engines from Unity to Unreal, a choice that we don't regret and one that has worked out for us. With the switch we began envisioning doing more, but straying from the core concepts of the original title.

As our concept grew and as our team changed, so did the scope of what we were doing and with that the budget for the game. As the budget grew, we began a long series of conversations with potential publishing partners. The more that we worked on the game, the more that we wanted to do, and the further we got from the original concepts that made System Shock so great.

Ultimately the responsibility for the decisions rests with me. As the CEO and founder of Nightdive Studios, a company that was built on the restoration of the System Shock franchise, I let things get out of control. I can tell you that I did it for all the right reasons, that I was totally committed to making a great game, but it has become clear to me that we took the wrong path, that we turned our backs on the very people who made this possible, our Kickstarter backers."

Director of business development Larry Kuperman told Polygon that Nightdive attempted pitching System Shock to publishers for extra funding, but those plans fell through. Kuperman also noted that while 15 or so contract workers will be taken off the project, there won't be layoffs for full-time staff.

At first glance, "System Shock put on hiatus" is not the sort of headline you want to read as a backer, but the alternative -- having an overly ambitious game stretched too thin, or an outright cancellation -- has got to be worse. I do hope they figure out a plan. I was really looking forward to this game.

News:: Joe Madureira Documentary - From Comics to Games

This past week Gameumentary released its latest Side Feature documentary covering the early career of Joe Madureira in comics and games.

This Side Feature marks the beginning of Gameumentary's coverage on the Darksiders franchise and the story that follows after the closure of THQ.

Releasing later in March, the Darksiders documentary will be Gameumentary's longest production yet by quite a margin.

Following the Darksiders documentary, Gameumentary will continue the story of Vigil by releasing documentaries on both Gunfire Games and Airship Syndicate later in 2018.

News:: PlayStation Network is running a flash sale

It's another flash-sale Friday on the North American PlayStation Network. What'll it be this time?

This weekend's sale is light on Vita games (even more than normal, I mean), but there's a decent crop of PS3 titles. Of course, PS4 is where most of the deals fall. That hasn't changed. I'm spotting Titanfall 2 for $10 -- a good price for the story campaign if that's all you want -- and SOMA for $12.

There's a fair amount of games under $10 this time around. Let us know what if anything you pick out.

News:: Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality hits PS4 in April

For as many PlayStation VR games as I own, so few of them are physical copies. Sometimes that's by choice (it's a lot easier to swap between games with a headset on when you don't have to change discs, and file sizes are typically small), but for the most part, digital is just all that's available.

With the PSVR port of Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality, we'll have options.

The puzzle-solving comedic adventure releases for PS4 on April 10, 2018 with a standard physical copy and also a collector's edition. The latter includes a double-sided poster and (everyone's favorite!) a Funko Pop vinyl figure. One side of the poster should look familiar to fans of The Last of Us.

The other takeaway? They got a Plumbus on the box art.

News:: Overwatch is holding another free weekend event

Blizzard's latest free-play event for Overwatch starts right now. You'll be able to play the team-based shooter on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One at no extra charge until Monday, February 19 at 11:59pm Pacific. (Note: You will need either PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold if you're on console.)

As usual, the promotional event offers access to all of the game's heroes and maps, plus Quick Play, Custom Games, and the Arcade. The timing here is great, too -- Overwatch is currently running its Year of the Dog celebration and that includes a newly-reworked capture the flag mode.

My interest in Overwatch wanes from time to time, but right now, I'm all about it. A large part of that is due to the Overwatch League, which just concluded its first stage. For once, my team won!

News:: Kenshiro has many ways of dealing with foes in Hokuto ga Gotoku

Every time I see Hokuto ga Gotoku, I get more excited and hope Sega tells us that a localization is coming. I love Yakuza and seeing the team work on something new gets me really excited. Anyway, with the game coming out in mere weeks in Japan, Sega is getting people ready to jump into Kenshiro's boots with some new gameplay 101 trailers.

These videos cover "Beginner," "Intermediate," and "Advanced" techniques. My favorite bit has to be grabbing the death quotes from fallen enemies and beating your foes with them. This is looking absurd in all the right ways and I love it. Kenshiro can also unleash the power of the Hokuto Shinken after filling a seven star meter (referencing his seven scars).

News:: Xenoblade Chronicles 2's big New Game+ patch has been delayed

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was all set to get a massive patch, one that would add a welcomed-but-at-the-same-time-insane-because-wow-this-game-is-packed New Game+ mode -- but it's just been delayed.

Nintendo announced the delay on Twitter, and was transparent about it pertaining to a bug that basically screwed the whole patch deployment operation. The time that's needed to fix it? About two weeks. You can catch the patch on March 2 worldwide.

As a reminder the big draw of patch 1.3.0 is of course NG+, which is described as "Advanced New Game Mode" with a few twists -- most notably, more blades can be recruited, including spoilerific characters. These blades can be found almost immediately if you're lucky when popping crystals, which the team notes can cause some story problems -- but they put in anyway since players have already beaten the game and they decided to err on the side of fun. You can also dispatch more blades for missions, even story ones that couldn't leave your party before, there's more affinity tree development, and you can level-down at inns to earn bonus XP that can be used to buy unique items.

Works for me!

News:: Let's check in with those two Persona dancing games

I vividly recall walking through Akihabara, Tokyo a few years back and just standing in the sidewalk to watch an advertisement for Persona 4: Dancing All Night. It was a surreal moment to see such a niche series from my childhood come so far and host a rhythm game to boot.

It was such a popular spinoff that we're getting not one, but two more of them, in the form of Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night. Both are out on May 24 in Japan (and haven't been announced for localization yet), and you can get a better look at them with the latest Ann and Junpei trailers below for each respective game.

Even though a few big series like PaRappa are dormant, rhythm is still alive and well.

News:: Dissidia Final Fantasy NT now has a proper spectator mode

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is going to have a tough time in the pro circuit due to a few key mechanics, but I've been having fun with it when treating it as an escapist brawler. It could easily expand its audience beyond that with tweaks though, which I hope are coming given that we already have a ton of confirmed paid DLC on the way.

One such addition did already arrive in the form of patch 1.05, which came around the same time as 1.04. As a result of the new updates NT now has a proper spectator mode in custom matches, stability has been improved, a few unnamed bugs have been fixed, and you can now copy EX skills between characters (a nice quality of life addition for roster setup).

Get a look at the full official notes below, but be wary that they're sparse. That's another thing Square Enix could fix -- better, more detailed patch notes! I'm sure serious fans will appreciate knowing exactly which bugs have been addressed.

News:: Review: Monster Energy Supercross - The Official Videogame

Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Videogame is a first for me as a contributor to Destructoid as it’s a title I’ve covered from reveal to release. I was there for its announcement, playing the version developer Milestone brought to Las Vegas for the Monster Energy Cup. I was there when the full game and track editor were shown off for the first time to the gaming press, and I’m here now reviewing it.

It’s interesting to follow a game in this manner, to experience it presented in the absolute best light under developer and publisher supervision and then compare it to the actual product sold in stores. Sadly, Monster Energy Supercross loses some of its luster from preview to review, but at its core, it's a pretty fun racer.

News:: For Hideki Kamiya, Bayonetta 4 seems to be a given

It's crazy to think that at this point, Bayonetta is basically a Nintendo property. She's been featured in their biggest fighting game franchise, hosted two exclusives, and two ports of the original. Nintendo made Bayonetta 2 and 3 possible and series director Hideki Kamiya seems to be very happy with his relationship with his publisher.

So much so in fact, that Bayonetta 3 doesn't seem to be the end of things. Speaking candidly on Twitter, Kamiya stated something to the effect of "Well, I have plans for the fourth [Bayonetta]," when asked whether or not the series was going to continue.

I'd love to live in a world where Bayonetta and a proper Capcom Devil May Cry co-exist and challenge each other. It's a great time to be an action game fan -- but isn't it always?

News:: Hot Wheels' new AR track turns toy racing into a warzone

Hot Wheels may be known for little die-cast cars, but celebrating its 50th birthday this year doesn't mean it's stuck in the past. The brand's already given us AI-controlled racers and cars on virtual courses, but the one thing that's gone largely untouched is its signature plastic track. This year, Hot Wheels mixes things up with Augmoto, which takes the classic racing set and throws augmented reality on top of it. Now, road hazards and collisions can now look as cool as they do in your head, and each race becomes a lot more strategic.
