News::September 2014 NPD: PS4 outsells Xbox One despite Microsoft giving away a free game

Gamesbeat : "Sonys co-marketing deal for Destiny helped the PlayStation 4, but Microsoft had some good luck with its own free-game promotion as well. Consumers spent $1.1 billion on new physical games and consoles at U.S. retailers during the five-week period from Aug. 31 to Oct. 4. That is up 2 percent from $1.08 billion over a similar period in 2013. The year-long trend of new-console sales making up for lackluster software continued once again."

News::Leave 'em Laughing attempts to make a game out of comedy

Comedy ain't easy, especially in this medium, so a title that tries to game-ify creating a stand-up comedy routine sound a tad ambitious. Leave 'em Laughing from Australian developer Oscar Brittain is a mashup of adventure game elements with a procedurally generated comedy system.

Nelson is an aspiring comedian from Freemantle in Western Australia on an adventure to find his missing dad, which will provide great material for some jokes and this is where the procedural generation comes in. Each game will have a unique city location for Nelson to explore that will generate his joke list. How well he pieces together his gags, however, is up to you.

It's an interesting concept, at least. Most games attempt humor and fail (Jazzpunk being the awesome exception) but it's rare to see one focus on the creation of actual comedy. Of course, in the end someone is writing these jokes, so your mileage may vary.

At least it's not me writing the gags. I've graduated to making "dad jokes" at the age of 34 without actually spawning any offspring.

News::Sunless Sea Preview | VGU

Sam Foxall from VGU writes: 'You sail past undersea vents belching up green smoke. Your armoured guinea pig mascot tells you a giant crab is closing in on your ship, while coffins rattle in your cargo hold along with animate mudmen. This is the world of Sunless Sea, the first videogame from Fail Better Games who previously worked on the browser game, Fallen London. We were able to play the Early Access version, which is being updated prior to its December release date. Should you set sail upon the Zee, or should it be left in the murky depths?'

News::Dark Souls II Design Works book is full of bleak, gloomy pictures

Today in news that made me squeal like a fanboy, From Software has released a Design Works book for Dark Souls II just like its predecessor in Japan. It features over 200 pages of the darkly beautiful art of the Souls world, including illustrations and concept work from both the main game and the DLC chapters. You can find pages for it on both From Software's site and Amazon Japan where it is available today.

No word on an English version yet, but given the popularity of the Souls series and the success of the English version of the first Design Works book, it seems likely that we'll eventually see one. Even so, considering the original's heavy emphasis on illustrations and concept art as opposed to written content, you might not miss out on much importing the Japanese version anyway.

Supplemental material like this is especially interesting for the Souls series as they often help illuminate the mysterious story and strange world of the games, or at least provide some extra insight into the dev team's thought process. The original Design Works book for example hinted at some areas that were cut from the release version and a much larger role for Andre the Blacksmith, who was intended to be a pivotal character, but wound up as little more than a merchant (who can box and dropkick like a boss if provoked!).

You can check out a sample of what the book has to offer on an Imgur gallery. I may not have loved Dark Souls II as much as the first one, but it still had some of the most striking designs I've seen in a game; those From Software folks definitely know what they're doing.

News::Reds lack of choice explores concept of agency in Transistor

Gameverse - Recently, while preparing for an interview with Supergiant Games Darren Korb and Ashley Barrett I came across an analysis of Transistor written by freelance writer Nissacam. What I found surprised me and offered an understanding that not only is Transistor an exploration of agency, but that Red herself seems somewhat aware that she is a character in a game.

News::Vacationing in Far Cry 4s Luscious Kyrat | Hardcore Gamer

Hardcore Gamer: "While the Far Cry series has always been well known amongst first person shooter fans, it wasnt until the third iteration that it drastically broke it into mainstream popularity. Far Cry 3 did everything right: a beautiful world to explore, a story filled with a compelling cast of characters, entertaining main and side missions, and of course, the psychopathic Vaas. Since its release two years ago, Ubisoft has been hard at work creating a follow up with an entirely new story, setting and set of characters. While we got our hands on the game at E3 this year, we take a deeper look at what to expect when the game launches next month."

News::Ryse: Son of Rome Performance Guide

Nicolae Andrei at in2gpu.com wrote: "This is the second game created by Crytek which runs well. The first one is Crysis 2. This kind of makes sense, since both games had to be on consoles. Crysis 1 was ported afterwards and Crysis 3 had an excess of zeal or something, I dont know. So, after, uhm lets call it an adequate launch, on Xbox One, Ryse: Son of Rome finally makes its way onto the PC. I admit I expected a half assed port, instead Crytek did a pretty good job. Lets start with the basic settings:"

News::Payday: The Heist is free on Steam today

We told you way in advance that Payday: The Heist would be free to download (and keep!) on Steam for 24 hours, but the original date has since been moved up to ... today!

Claim your free copy here.

You know what this game is already, right? If not, it's the one about committing robberies with friends while wearing really creepy masks. Definitely worth adding to the ol' Steam library but it's also a freebie you might consider, well, playing. I know, I know -- crazy thought.

On a related note, Steam is hosting a free weekend for 10 games including the sequel to Payday. That promotion is live now and will continue until Sunday afternoon. Better prioritize.

Examiner had an exclusive interview with creative director Julian Gerighty regarding Ubisoft's upcoming title and in it we discussed post-game content. Much like Bungie's Destiny, a comparison we've made before, there's a significant amount of content that can only be attained upon repeat visits to missions that have already been completed."

Today Polish developer Destructive creations launched the first trailer of its upcoming PC game Hatred, causing extremely negative reactions from many, since it basically depicts one minute and a half of mass murder. The trailer also includes the Unreal Engine 4 logo, since the engine is being used to create the game. Apparently Epic Games doesnt really want to be associated with the themes depicted, and theyre requesting the logo to be pulled, as we mentioned in a statement.

However, on this day players were gifted with broken promises, simplistic gameplay, inadequate villains, ruined memories and tarnished dreams.

News::Uh, Nintendo? There are now 54 face plates for the New 3DS

Nintendo is showing off even more face plates for the New 3DS and, jeez, there's now more than 50 designs announced. Take a look. See anything you like?

Out of the new set, my favorite is the Boo theme (No. 50) but a shout out to K.K. Slider (No. 41) is also in order. Excluding the Yo-kai Watch face plate (No. 54), which releases in Japan on December 13, the rest are scheduled for November 11.

It's a common sentiment, I'm sure, but I'll say it anyway: too bad the New 3DS XL doesn't support swappable face plates. As much as I like the designs, if and when I upgrade, I want the big screen.
