Video Games Got More Beautiful This Year

Sure, you could say that video games get more beautiful every year. Graphics technology gets better, game developers get more adept, and as a result, games get more beautiful. All the same, 2014 felt like a special year for video game beauty.

News::Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut Review | Power Up Gaming

Owen Atkinson writes: "As the follow-up to 2013's Shadowrun Returns, Shadowrun: Dragonfall has been hailed by some as the game that Returns should have been. Not so much sequel as a continuation, Dragonfall changes little from the formula that revitalised the Shadowrun series. But does it add enough to justify a second purchase?"

News::Habitat Preview [Capsule Computers]

Jamie Laike Tsui of Capsule Computers writes: "Habitat is a quirky physics based strategy game from 4gency and Versus Evil (The Banner Saga). The game is currently in Early Access alpha and was funded with the help of a Kickstarter campaign held earlier in the year. Players are given a randomly generated patch of space junk and some engineers to create a habitat that will help them survive."

News::Catgirl visual novel Nekopara out today on Steam

Nekopara tells the tale of Kashou Minaduki, a young baker descended from a long line of Japanese confection makers who sets out on his own to open a patisserie. Of course, a couple of catgirls show up, as catgirls are wont to do, and hijinks ensue. Naturally.

The visual novel is slated to debut on Steam today at 6pm PST with a cool $10 asking price.

It's Not Quite Super Metroid, But It'll Do

The bad news: we haven't seen a Metroid game in almost five years, and that's not looking to change any time soon. The good news: Xeodrifter, which came out earlier this month for PC and 3DS, is a fine enough substitute. Well, it's an OK substitute. A decent enough substitute. It's margarine, basically. It's I Can't Believe It's Not Metroid.

News::How to Survive Review (PC) - Trust in Play

Trust in Play: "With countless zombie games out there where the protagonist can slice and dice their zombies up, how in fact would you survive the zombie apocalypse? Its easy to start up Dead Rising, grab a chainsaw, and start tearing apart zombies, but what should your goal be at the start of the apocalypse? How can you survive a world where the majority of the human race is against you and food is dwindling? Thats the goal the developers at EKO Software had in mind with How to Survive."

News::Wii U GameCube adapter is in stock at GameStop, in bundle form

Just a quick heads-up, the Wii U GameCube controller adapter is in stock at GameStop online for $109.97, which means that you'll have to buy the Smash Bros. bundle to get it. It includes the Wii U edition of the game, as well as a GameCube controller and the adapter itself.

To price it all out, the game is $60, the adapter is $20 (but sold out everywhere), and the controller is $30 -- so you're not saving anything, but if you're desperate for that adapter you could always sell off the other bits yourself.

News::Lisa ReviewPain and Pleasure (The Koalition)

Garrett from The Koalition writes: You may remember Lisa as that painful looking RPG on Kickstarter with cute graphics that are comparable to Earthbound. Having played both Earthbound and Lisa, I can safely say that this is a fair comparison. However, Earthbound, while undoubtedly cute, is subtle with its blemishes, as the Charlie Brown aesthetic thinly veils its horrific themes like police brutality; you could easily mistake it for a kids game. The same cant be said for Lisa, however. Yes, the sprite art is ostensibly cute, but by the time I witnessed the scene in which a young Brad Armstrong gets hit in the head with a beer bottle by his alcoholic father, I knew that Lisa is not fucking around.

Sex Can Get Pretty Weird In The Sims 4, Thanks To Cheats

Under normal circumstances, sex in The Sims 4 is rather tame. You don't really get to see anything, and instead of 'sex,' the game calls it 'wohoo.' But players are finding their own ways of making the game saucier—and the results are hilarious.

News::Be the biggest fan with Paparazzi's asymmetric multiplayer

I won't lie; I was tempted to just post Lady Gaga lyrics as I hum the tune and then call it a day. That would do a disservice to the game Paparazzi , which was featured in the Indiecade showcase at E3 2014. We missed it then, but it is looking like a unique competitive multiplayer title.

One player takes on the role of the celebrity and the other plays as the paparazzi. The celebrity has to maintain his dignity by sprinting around, hiding in crowds, and otherwise avoiding the gaze of the photographer. Meanwhile, the paparazzi player has to search for the celebrity, be quick to track, and go for the ultimate limousine-exiting crotch shot.

Paparazzi is headed to PlayStation 4 and Wii U in February 2015.
