News:: Review: Mutant Football League

All this talk about “sportsball” on Twitter during the Super Bowl sort of eluded me. Yes, I get it; gamers and geek culture are not generally associated with being sports fans. I can’t even properly say I am one myself. I didn’t watch the Super Bowl this year, or last, and I don’t really follow teams, but that has a lot more to do with the way I take in entertainment. I don’t watch TV very often in general. It’s like pulling teeth to get me to watch a movie. But unquestionably, my favorite organized sport is football, and I am not a stranger to football video games.

Now I’ll be clear here: I am referring specifically to arcade-style football. I have never been able to fully understand or appreciate the nuance of the Madden series (except in very early iterations) or other more serious football simulations. The idea of sitting through hours of tutorials and having to remember fifty different button commands to stand a chance at fighting my way through a season is arduous for me. But the these days, the options seem more limited than ever. Madden has practically monopolized the sport at this point, NFL Blitz is nowhere to be found, so if you want a decent game of football, you are practically forced to suck at the teat of EA and deal with everything that comes with it.

So it’s really nice to see an option come seemingly out of left field (because sports haha) in Mutant Football League. Not only is it a welcome addition to a genre that is sorely lacking in variation, but it’s a revival of a fun 16-bit franchise, the Mutant League sports series, that I remember pretty fondly from my childhood. It has a few kinks and imperfections which I will get into, but I was able to look past them quickly and enjoy the base game for what it is: simple, straightforward arcade football.

With punching and blood and explosions and mayhem.

News:: It's Black History Month so let's talk about our favorite black video game characters

Leslie in accounting just added a Martin Luther King Jr. quote to her email signature template which can only mean one thing: it’s Black History Month. Yes, it’s that time of year where students in elementary school will spend a solid 30 minutes learning about Rosa Parks and then enjoy a peanut butter sandwich because of George Washington Carver. At least that’s what we did at my white-ass elementary school. And if you think that’s an ignorant way to look at black history in America, you should know that at my middle school, we had a “slave run day” where members of the eighth-grade class were divided up into two groups: runaway slaves and slave catchers. On this day, the “slaves” would get 15 minutes to find a hiding spot in the school, after which the catchers would go around looking for them for 15 minutes, only able to search if they had the permission of the teacher of the classroom or office worker. The process would repeat throughout the day and at the end of school, any “slaves” not caught would be considered to have reached freedom in the North. That’s right, our lesson in the Underground Railroad was a day of hide-and-seek.

What does that have to do with black video game characters? Absolutely nothing, but it’s a little bit of ridiculousness from my past that there is no better time of sharing then right now. Because just as my school clearly got teaching black history wrong, the video game developers don’t have the best history of creating black characters. From racist-ass NES games out of Japan to the white-nonsense that was slave ship Tetris, some developers just don’t get it. But others do and that’s who we’re here to talk about today.

Just as I did with female characters for Women’s History Month and male characters for International Men’s Day, I asked my fellow Destructoid editors to sound off on their favorite black video game characters.  While I’m sure those names listed below are all fine in their own standing, I’m going to go out on a limb and say whoever they write about can’t be as good as Shinobu from No More Heroes.

Suda51’s masterstroke on the Wii resonates still with its punk aesthetics, piss-in-the-wind attitude, and a cast of certified case studies. The series is a straight-up banger. I maintain Suda51 is the single best character creator coming out of Japan with this game as yet another reason in the long list of why. Every villain in No More Heroes is a brilliantly deranged but Shinobu is so broken I think I like her more than the protagonist.

Originally an opponent of Travis Touchdown, Shinobu is out for blood believing he is responsible for her father’s death. She’s heartless, as demonstrated -- spoiler alert -- when she kills all the witnesses to Travis’s challenge of her. You almost feel sorry for her, a teenager living a secret life as an assassin because some jackass with a laser sword killed her father so many years ago. She’s turned off her heart and cast out her soul, leaving her an empty vessel for vengeance. Yeah, she saves Travis near the end of the game, but she’s no hero otherwise the game would have been called Still One Hero.

Shinobu could have easily fallen into the trap writers use when they want to reform a former enemy. She could have started to grow, started to feel again. She could have tried to make amends for all the innocents she’s slaughtered. But that wouldn’t be punk. Instead, she grows even more insane. After killing her way across Asia, she returns to Santa Destroy completely infatuated with Travis. She transfers her crazy dedication from her father to him, trying to wrangle Travis into a sexual master/apprentice relationship that creeps even him out. And Travis is pretty much the type of person to make PornHub his homepage.

She's cold, she's crazy, and I absolutely love her. This assassin’s journey isn’t done yet, and while I don’t anticipate her showing up in Travis Strikes Again if No More Heroes 3 does get made, Shinobu damn well better make an appearance.

News:: Review: Space Invaders Extreme (PC)

Almost 10 years ago, Space Invaders Extreme released for the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable and blew people away. The game was a wild reinvention of one of the most iconic shmups ever made and it somehow transformed a 30-year-old property into a modern darling. To say it was a must-own is an understatement, as you basically won’t find a single negative comment about the game on the entire internet.

Following that success, the game was eventually ported to the Xbox 360 with an overhauled soundtrack and some slight upgrades done to the graphics. The 360 port included four-player co-op, an improvement over the original’s two-player option, and was a critical darling for how chaotic the gameplay became. Sadly, that new soundtrack really put a damper on the experience and the game wasn’t as widely loved as the DS original (the PSP version also had a different soundtrack).

Now, 10 years later, we’re getting a PC re-release of the DS original that contains all of the improved visuals from the 360 port, but actually lacks features present from the beginning. The gameplay is still highly addictive, flashy, and chaotic, but this new port feels like a missed opportunity to provide us the “definitive” edition of Extreme.

News:: These bands would make awesome game soundtracks

It's not a new phenomenon for established mainstream musicians to create game soundtracks. Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo fame was largely responsible for The Sims 2 soundtrack; that little-known bloke Paul McCartney did work for Destiny's soundtrack that disappeared into the ether; and who can forget Little Jimmy Urine of Mindless Self Indulgence's contributions to the entirely memorable Lollipop Chainsaw? Having said that, in an ideal world where studios have heaving piles of money to throw at developing their projects, there are a couple of additional musicians I would like to see turn their attentions and talents to creating an OST.

So, which bands would I pick? And what would these hypothetical games be like? Here are my suggestions, with handy-dandy miniature Spotify playlists for reference. Enjoy!

News:: Valkyria Chronicles 4 trailer introduces the Edinburgh Army

Sega have started a new series of trailers featuring the characters of upcoming strategy sequel Valkyria Chronicles 4. The latest chapter in the series features more young men and women thrust into the dramatic conflict between the Atlantic Federation and the Eastern Imperial Alliance.

This first trailer stars the soldiers of The Edinburgh Army, Division No.1, or Squad E, led by the game's lead, Commander Claude Wallace. Wallace is backed by his loyal troops, including childhood friend and weapons expert Riley Miller, expert sharpshooter Kai Schulen, and brash assault trooper Raz.

These four characters make up the game's protagonists, and the player's eyes into their violent, unforgiving world. They will meet many allies and enemies along the way, which we will no doubt meet in further trailers in this series.

Valkyria Chronicles 4
launches in Japan in March on PS4 and Summer on Nintendo Switch. It is scheduled for release in the West on PS4, Xbox One and Switch later in 2018.

News:: Pearl and Marina amiibo announced as Off the Hook hold first concert

In a news it feels like I should have been reporting months ago, Nintendo have revealed that Splatoon 2 hosts Pearl and Marina are finally being made available as part of the amiibo range. The news comes at the end of a week which saw the girls, collectively known as "Off the Hook", perform in their first live concert (footage from NintendoWire).

The Big N dropped the amiibo reveal at the end of Japan's Koshien Tournament. The trailer features the besties in their all-new plastic forms. They're pretty damn good, with both gals looking vibrant in their respective neon colours, whilst vogue-ing like the superstars that they are.

Alongside the new amiibo, some new content was announced for the arena shooter, including the upcoming addition of Tetra Dualies to the game's arsenal and an all-new stage, Ajifurai Stadium.

Other than this trailer, there is little info on the girls. We don't have a release date, or any hints as to what features the duo will unlock. For now, I'm choosing to bask in the momentous realisation that I will soon have Queen of the World Pearl to call my very own... and her DJ pal, to whom I'm fairly indifferent.

Now, we just need Shantae, and we're all set.

News:: 'Monsters Inc' is the next Pixar world coming to 'Kingdom Hearts 3'

Pixar's presence in Kingdom Hearts 3 won't be limited to the Toy Story crew. Square Enix and Disney have revealed that Monsters Inc will play a role, too. You'll see Boo, Mike and Sully (minus the famous actors, of course) as well as settings from the classic CG movie, such as the door vault. There's even the chance to wield weapons themed around the movie... including Mike, apparently.
