News:: $1,000 seems like an awful lot of money for a Nioh statue

Team Ninja's Nioh was a strong effort that had a legitimate claim to being one of 2017's very best titles. It's a beloved game, which means that it has its share of devoted supporters. But how many of them are willing to drop a grand on a dang statue?

Prime 1 Studio, a company that specializes in making realistic and expensive collector's statues, has a prototype for a new $1,000 piece that's based on Nioh. It has protagonist William Adams kind of hunched over while guardian spirit Saorise hovers over him. It's big, too -- measuring about two feet in height, width, and depth.

News:: The Netherlands has declared some loot boxes as gambling

Last year's release of Star Wars Battlefront II seemed to be the straw that broke the camel's back. Not even a week after the game was on store shelves, a bunch of politicians were looking into whether or not the loot boxes contained within the game were a form of gambling, something that has led to multiple conclusions since.

The newest update in this never ending struggle comes from the Netherlands. The Dutch Gaming Authority looked into 10 different games with loot boxes and declared that at least four of them were in violation of its "Betting and Gaming" act. The biggest reason for that decision was that the four games allowed for the sale or trade of items via external websites, therefore giving the items a market value.

Speaking with broadcast network NOS [via Dutch News], Dutch gaming authority director Marja Appelman said, "The computer games have been designed like gambling games, and they give the player the feeling they have almost won. When you open a loot box there are all sorts of sound effects and that encourages people to keep playing."

The six other games studied were not in violation of any laws, but were still heavily criticized for their addictive qualities. In an odd note, while the games under study were not revealed, NOS does bring up DOTA 2, Rocket League, PUBG and FIFA 18 as prime examples of loot boxes breaking the law. "Offering this type of game of chance to Dutch players without a license is prohibited," concludes the Dutch Gaming Authority.

News:: Getting weird with Knuckle Sandwich

Knuckle Sandwich is a surreal RPG in the vein of EarthBound, but there’s so much more to it than that. Andrew Brophy, the creator of the game, uploaded a cryptic trailer last week announcing that there would be an “announcement” on April 19. It featured warped, psychedelic images across an old television, while obscured gameplay lurked in the background. Today, we finally got to see what the big secret was all about.

Alongside a brand new trailer, Brophy announced he's launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the rest of development. He's asking for a modest amount just under $20,000 so he can work on the project full-time. I got the chance to get my hands on a demo of the game and it's every bit as ridiculous as it looks.

News:: PUBG will be getting its long requested map toggle soon

When PUBG introduced a new map, one of the first requests from players was some sort of ability to toggle whether they wanted to play on it or not. This was such a seemingly simple addition that it is kind of mind boggling why it has taken so long. Finally, though, a map toggle selector will soon be coming to the popular battle royale game.

As the Steam community forum update explains, the reason for the delay in the update was down to matchmaking. "We wanted to make sure that we could create a solution that worked for every region’s players, even the ones with a naturally low server population." I'm not sure I buy that, especially with 30 million people owning the game, but at least the feature is finally a reality.

After a short stint on the test servers to fully gauge how this impacts matchmaking, the feature will be implemented into the main game for everyone. I can't wait for Miramar to become a wasteland; I might be able to rack up more wins on it!

News:: There are plenty of ways to get rid of a body in Graveyard Keeper

It's been a while since we've heard anything about Graveyard Keeper, tinyBuild's upcoming simulator about life as a medieval mortuary master. But unlike its subject matter, Graveyard Keeper isn't dead as new gameplay footage shows there's more to life in this macabre game than its title implies.

Graveyard Keeper's recent gameplay trailer focuses on the daily life of its main character. There's plenty to do in addition to burying the dead, like performing autopsies, exploring dungeons, and even farming some crops. As expected from a simulator, Graveyard Keeper offers a series of upgrades and unlocks, allowing players to improve their skills and expand their body-burying empire.

But what's most interesting about Graveyard Keeper isn't its novel spin on medieval life; it's what you can do with the dead. According to tinyBuild, players can be less-than-ethical when it comes to disposing of bodies, be it for financial gain or as an act of sheer laziness. Pawning limbs and tossing bodies into a nearby river aren't exactly skills you should list on a resume, but when it comes to dealing with corpses, no harm, no foul.

News:: If I can get this many PUBG kills, you can too (maybe)

I don't know if this is a guide or a ego-fueled showcase of skills or a half-hearted pep talk that you can do it too. All I know is that I killed 12 percent of the players in a PUBG game last night. (There were 93 at the start.)

Listen, I never thought it could happen to me. I'm the guy who's happy with, like, three kills in any given game. But then the stars aligned, my nerves steeled, and I murdered 11 people in rapid succession. I don't know, maybe this could be you some day (but probably not).

Come with me on this brief journey of extremely-good-video-game-playing.

News:: Real Bout Fatal Fury returns today on Nintendo Switch

SNK's domineering obsession with re-releasing their back catalogue continues unabated this week, with classic arcade fighter Real Bout Fatal Fury hits Nintendo Switch today.

Originally launching on the arcade and Neo Geo platform in 1995, before being transitioned to the PlayStation and Sega Saturn a year or so later, RBFF is the fifth title in the company's Fatal Fury franchise. The controls received an overhaul, resulting in three attack buttons and a dedicated button for switching between the stage's three plains.

RBFF also brought Ring-Out victories to the franchise, with the ability to knock your opponent clean through the scenery in order to score a victory. The majority of the Fatal Fury crew show up to rumble, including the Bogard brothers, Joe Higashi, Yamazaki, Wolfgang Krauser and, of course, Mai Shiranui. Geese Howard returns as the final boss, in what was intended to be the smug bastard's swansong.

Today, RBFF is a fine fighter, I personally don't think it has dated all that well compared to other SNK games such as Real Bout 2 or Garou: Mark of the Wolves. Still, for completionists, it's great to see all of these games arrive, slowly but surely, onto modern platforms.

Real Bout Fatal Fury is available from Nintendo's eShop today, priced around $8.

News:: PSA: Fortnite is having a double XP weekend

As a way to say "sorry" for Fornite's server outages and a delay of the 50v50 mode, Epic Games is kicking off a double XP weekend. Unfortunately there was a database issue last week, and when the system went back online it buckled under the sheer weight of everyone trying to log back in.

The double XP festivities will start on April 19 and run until April 22, at which point you can...what else...nab double experience points in the battle Royale mode -- you'll also nab 20 Battle Pass Stars for your trouble.

It goes without saying but Fornite is the new in game right now, but I've been following it for a while and the whole meteoric rise phenomenon has been fascinating. It's funny watching it rank below League of Legends and Counterstrike during the day then dominate in the evenings when kids are home from school. Maybe I'll see you this weekend!

News:: David Leitch signs on to direct The Division movie

We're getting closer, everyone. Rampage threatened to be mildly entertaining, and that means we're just a few steps away from an actually good video game movie. It's gonna happen, and maybe it'll be The Division that does it? With the announcement that David Leich is directing I'm thinking... maybe?

The game's story and general quality are kind of meh, and it really did a crappy job of saying anything at all, but that's why I think they can pull this off. There's so little there that Leich, who has some serious action direction chops, could put his own stamp on this thing, and maybe actually say something in the process. Lord knows the game didn't attempt to do anything interesting so we've basically got a clean slate here. Having Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain star in the film won't hurt, but then again Gyllenhaal was in Prince of Persia and that was a craptacular video game adaptation.

So maybe this one won't suc... what's that? This is being developed by Ubisoft's film studio, who made Assassin's Creed? Never mind, guys, nothing to see here.

News:: Warhammer 40k: Inquisitor - Martyr delayed to June, as developers vow to work past the point of good health

Delays can be a bummer, but they're common enough to be mostly-accepted as a part of the video game development process. It's very hard to make a game that has widespread appeal, so of course there might be some bumps in the road. Most people hold this mindset regarding delays: Take as much time as you need, because it's better to wait for a more polished game than to get an inferior product now.

The developer of Warhammer 40k: Inquisitor - Martyr, NeocoreGames, is taking this to illogical extremes. Neocore just announced a slight delay for Martyr's release -- from May 11 to June 5. The holdup has to do with one console version (PS4 or Xbox One) not being quite ready to pass certification, and a publishing agreement that mandates PC and consoles launch simultaneously. So, this Diablo-like action RPG styled in the Warhammer universe will have to stay in Early Access just a little bit longer.

In an update on the game's Steam page, Martyr producer Zoltán Pozsonyi assures that this spare time won't be wasted. "This means that the PC version gets three extra weeks of polishing, which is never a bad thing. This also means that the game will be in a much better shape at release," Pozsonyi says. However, he also states "In return, we promise we'll push this extra three weeks in 90+ hours per week so it'll be very-very useful for Martyr."

That's unhealthy! Very-very unhealthy! That's more than half of the hours in a full seven-day week spent developing a video game. And that promise stretches for many consecutive weeks. (For what it's worth, Neocore is based in Hungary -- a country whose working culture is similar to the United States' where 40 hours per week is considered standard full-time employment.)

For the sake of the Martyr team, let's hope that Pozsonyi was being hyperbolic in his statement. Maybe it was just a misguided way of emphasizing "We're really dedicated to this game, and we're pouring our hearts and souls into it." But if it's literal, crunching this hard will only contribute to burnout. These developers' personal and professional lives shouldn't be jeopardized in the name of some extra polish.

News:: Mega Man is set for a 30th anniversary concert in July, will have 'new announcements'

Capcom is putting some effort into Mega Man's 30th anniversary, mostly in the form of the first brand new Mega Man game in ages (11), but also by way of re-releases and events.

One example of the latter is the newly announced Mega Man 30th Anniversary Concert, which is now dated for July 8. It'll be held at Nakano Zero in Tokyo Japan, and will run at two times -- 12:30PM JST and 5:30PM JST. If you're curious, tunes from Battle Network, X, and Mega Man classic are confirmed, among others.

Strangely there's also going to be a separate announcement session by way of a talk show with "special guests." I wouldn't expect much, but I hope the concert goes well so they can expand it worldwide!

News:: Yakuza devs already at work on unannounced all-new title

The gangsters of Kamurocho have barely begun picking their teeth up from the floor in the wake of the week's Yakuza 6 release, but the developers are already making strides on exciting new titles.

Speaking in this week's issue of Famitsu, Sega Sammy boss Haruki Satomi revealed that the Yakuza team have already begun work on an all-new game. Remaining tight-lipped on the whole affair, we didn't get any further info on this venture, although Satomi also stated that the company is hoping to "challenge new IPs on all platforms" in the future.

The Yakuza games, although relatively samey, have always had consistently great gameplay, fun and varied side-attractions, great music and some of the best directed cutscenes in the industry. Hopefully this level of excellence will be transferred to whatever the new project is. I, for one, am very excited to see what the guys and gals of Yakuza Studio have planned for the future.

News:: Capcom shows off a substantial part of the Mega Man X Collection, including the double-boss mode

Capcom TV did another one of its lively streams, and in addition to showing off some upcoming features for existing games like Monster Hunter: World, they also gave some screentime to the Mega Man X Collection series, which will be hosting Mega Man X-X8 by way of two packs.

Starting at roughly 3:15:00 of the four hour long video, the publishers gives us some insight into the extras of the pack (mostly artwork and the Day of Sigma anime short), as well as a brief look at the games and the concept of the "X Challenge" game mode.

As a reminder, the latter pits Mega Man X against two bosses at once -- the demonstration involves Frost Walrus from X4 and Chill Penguin from X. An important aspect of this mode is that you're using advanced X kit from future games on old bosses like Chill Penguin. It's almost like an official ROM hack!

News:: With VR in the rear view, CCP is doubling down on EVE Online

CCP Games, creator of the equally famous and infamous EVE Online, had a lot to celebrate last week. Mere minutes from their offices in Reykjavik Iceland, at the Harpa concert hall, they hosted their 14th Fanfest: a celebration of the game and its fans by way of a three-day event.

But the studio is coming off of a rather uncharacteristic past few years, having invested so much in VR, only to watch its investment stagnate. CCP managed to hit several milestones with VR, as EVE: Valkyrie was not only the first game to break the cross-platform VR barrier, but it also brought us into the surface of EVE's planets with the Ground Rush expansion. Sparc, a competitive sports project, was the first non-EVE thing the company had ever done. The future looked bright, and then in October of 2017, CCP pulled the plug on both the pair of games and the studios involved.

As CEO Hilmar Pétursson noted at the Fanfest 2018 keynote, it was time to refocus. Pétursson had spent so much time working on VR that he didn't have time to play EVE, something he vowed to correct just last week when he announced he had recently returned to the game.

To make sense of these shifting tides, I spoke to several key members of CCP staff about where they were going and where they've been.

News:: SNK tease new hardware to celebrate 40th anniversary

Long time developer/publisher SNK are celebrating 40 years in the business this year. The  former arcade giant has teased that they will be releasing new hardware as a thank you to gamers for decades of faithful fandom.

Although there is no images, nor a name for the new hardware, it is expected to feature a selection of Neo Geo classics from their huge back catalogue. In their official statement, SNK referenced franchises such as The King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown and Metal Slug, some of which will surely see inclusion on the Neo Geo Classic upcoming console.

Re-releasing their old games has proved incredibly profitable for SNK, particularly in recent years. The classic titles put out by Hamster on modern platforms, particularly the Nintendo Switch releases, have done wonders to bolster SNK's coffers. The company also recently announced a compilation, coming soon to the Nintendo console.

We will, of course, keep you informed on this intriguing new device as info becomes available.

News:: Super Meat Boy Forever has more levels in the first chapter than the entirety of Super Meat Boy

If you're looking for a detailed preview of Super Meat Boy Forever, Peter has you covered. This post and video are more of a supplement to his post. I happened to stumble upon him playing the game at PAX, and before you knew it, we were chatting with Team Meat boss Tommy Refenes, level designer Kyle Pulver, and Dtoid's own Rich Meister in a profoundly distracting way. Peter somehow still managed to get his assignment done on time, with glowing praise for the game no less. What a pro.

We also got some additional details on the game from Tommy. He told us exactly how this new game manages to cram more levels into its first chapter that its predecessor had in its entirety. We also heard about the Cartoon Network animators he hired for the game, how this toughened up Meat Boy manages to run through broken glass with only a drained life meter to show for it, and the open invitation to Suda51 to consider a Super Meat Boy Forever t-shirt for Travis Strikes Again

Off camera, Tommy went even further, showing us a few cutscenes, some plans to implement the classic Super Meat Boy replay system in Forever, and The Betus, a new enemy that symbolizes Tommy's longtime struggle with diabetes. It eats Meat Boy whole, but it can't digest him because he's 100 percent sugar-free lean cuts of meat. Instead of finishing him off, The Betus just moves forward in a daze until the player punches their way out of his maw. This makes this new foe both an obstacle and a means of transportation.

That's just one of the ways that Super Meat Boy Forever takes a new spin with the Meat Boy mythos. It's a real treat!

News:: ‘Football Manager 2018’ ads promote mental health awareness

Football Manager 2018, like previous games in the long-running franchise, is known for being the digital equivalent of crack. But in addition to providing endless hours of entertainment, its loyal UK playerbase may well get something more important out of the José Mourinho simulator. As part of a new NHS initiative, pitch-side advertising boards within the game have begun featuring messages for MindMate, a youth mental health awareness and support service run by the NHS Leeds Clinical Commission Group. The idea is to engage young people on home turf, pointing them towards the MindMate website if they click on the ads -- assuming they notice them while they're watching their team get thumped 4-0 in the relegation playoffs.

News:: Screenshots and art released for Spider-Man villains and more

A selection of cool new screenshots have been released by Insomniac Games for their anticipated new Spider-Man title. The screens, which appeared in The Daily Bugle The Telegraph, show of some of the rogues awaiting the web-slinger in his new adventure.

We get to see Shocker, clad in badass-looking body-armour, and a somewhat Trump-looking Norman Osborn, in the relatively sane state he occupies before donning his baggy nightcap as villainous alter-ego The Green Goblin.

We can also see concept art of The Kingpin, whose shed a few pounds, good for him, and the creepy looking Mr. Negative. Accompanying these images are a selection of shots of Spidey himself patrolling New York City. It's already shaping up to be quite the exciting project. You can check out the screens yourself in the gallery below. Spider-Man launches on PS4 September 7.

News:: Here's a first look at the Disgaea remake, Disgaea Refine

NIS has revealed the look for Disgaea Refine, its upcoming remaster of the original Disgaea, set for PS4 and Switch later this year.

You can get a quick comparison shot below between the two visual styles (old and new), and I have to say it looks like a nice little upgrade. NIS explains that they tried to get the look as close to Disgaea 5 as possible. Other than that it's basically the same exact game, offering up ridiculous amounts of stuff to do as you attempt to level your party up to 9,999 and reincarnate them for higher bonuses.

There's also going to be a limited edition version when it hits Japan for 9,200 yen -- which comes with a tear-off desktop calendar and a selection of the soundtrack.
