News::Xbox Live Gold freebies: Dead Rising 2 and Case Zero

Does the screenshot say it all? If not, let's be clear: you should check out Dead Rising 2 . Especially if you're still hanging onto that Xbox Live Gold account of yours, because the game is free as of today through the Games With Gold program.

That's not all, either -- Dead Rising 2: Case Zero , the standalone DLC that helped ease us into Chuck Greene's story of being a good father and sometimes riding a tricycle in his boxers, is also a part of this promotion. Be sure to play it first if you want to carry over PP, clothing, and Combo Cards for a little head start in the full DR2.

These will remain free through the end of August, so don't take too much time.

News::Code Hero, one year later: Money, lawsuits and poker

"It's been a year since we ran out of money," Alex Peake told me at the end of a long day he said was spent building a level in the latest version of Code Hero. The Code Hero Kickstarter ended on February 24, 2012, raising $170,000 of a requested $100,000. The campaign, run by Peake and his Primer Labs studio, promised a full game in six months that would teach K-12 students how to write Unity code. With the over-funding, Peake tacked on "multiplayer MMO" features and a documentary about the crowdfunding process.

News::Is PC gaming back on Microsoft's radar?

Ever since finding massive success with the Xbox 360, Microsoft has given Windows gaming as much focus as a four year old would to a book of theoretical physics. Even when Microsoft has tried to work on Windows gaming, it has done so half-heartedly, birthing well-meaning failures like Games Explorer on Windows 7 and pure, unadulterated rubbish like Games for Windows Live. Just when PC Gamers everywhere had almost given up on Microsoft doing anything for Windows gaming, a bunch of recent developments have made us stop and take notice and very warily draw the conclusion that Microsoft may just have some new stuff planned for PC gamers.

News::Super Mario RPG battle system inspired by children's toy

Of the two Mario RPG sub-series, Mario & Luigi is much closer in tone and spirit to Super Mario RPG on the Super Nintendo. That's because M&L developer AlphaDream consists of former Square employees who worked on the plumber's first role-playing adventure.

To commemorate the release of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, IGN interviewed key Nintendo and AlphaDream members on the series' development history. Yoshihiko Maekawa, Super Mario RPG co-director and Dream Team co-producer, explained how Nintendo gave AlphaDream permission to inject Luigi with an original personality for the first M&L. He also addressed fans' desire to see Mallow and Geno return in a future M&L installment -- Geno made a super brief cameo in Superstar Saga, if you recall.

The big element that Super Mario RPG was known for and saw further evolution in the M&L series was the innovative timing-based battle system. "That was very much inspired by a children's toy that was available in Japan at the time," Maekawa recalled. "It was like a large laptop with these buttons that would play music. You had to press the buttons with good timing to the music. It was that idea, having gameplay built around timing button presses, that inspired me to hybridize these two genres of game, to get a little bit of action and RPG into the same game."

Scott from The Controller Online writes: "It has been many years since Space Hulk was first translated into video game form, but Full Control Studios are here to bring it into the modern era. Based on a popular, two player, standalone, board game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Space Hulk takes a more focused approach to commanding a group of Space Marines than many other games in the 40K universe. While previous games built around the same concepts of the Space Hulk Board game, Full Control are aiming for a faithful, digital, re-creation of the original rather than a video game that is simply based on the original.
