As the trailer stresses, this is pre-alpha gameplay.

Not all First Person Shooters will go do in history as a legend. What about the shooters that didnt quite hit the mark? News::World of Diving Preview | GameRevolution

GR: Ive had one previous experience with the hotly anticipated Oculus Rift VR headset, going eyes-on at PAX Prime to blow up some stationary mechs in a Hawken demo. I wasnt impressed. The game I played didnt demonstrate what I really wanted to use Oculus Rift for, and with Sonys announcement of Project Morpheus for PS4, I was desperate to give the tech another try. If this is the future of gaming, am I about to miss the wave? Do I even want to catch it? Thankfully, the team behind World of Diving kept the water warm for me. Ew. That sounds terrible, and my experience with the game was anything but. The developers behind this ever-expanding adventure let me try their social diving game with and without the Oculus Rift. Demand for World of Diving isnt limited to early adopters of virtual reality tech, as those without can still get the transportive underwater experience they didnt even know they wanted.

News::TowerFall Ascension | Review - AWESOMEoutof10

AWESOMEoutof10's Darik Kirschman draws back the bowstring and fires off a review of MattMakesGames'instant party hit, TowerFall Ascension. "Ultimately, that feeling sums up TowerFall Ascension as a whole: a lovingly crafted game, made to make gamers smile, yell, grumble and cheer in equal measure. Theres a reason why everybody paid attention to Ouya and this game is it. If you already happen to have an Ouya console and its version of TowerFall, I strongly urge you to pick up Ascension anyway. If youre worried that, without online multiplayer, TowerFall Ascension might not be worth it, pick it up anyway. The multiple modes make it a delight even without buddies to play and drink with. For years to come, TowerFall Ascension will be a staple at any game-night I have, right alongside the wonderful games that served as its inspiration. And I cant think of any higher honor than that."

News::Bravery, shame and other feelings: GDC 2014′s Indie Soapbox

Spelltower creator and Ridiculous Fishing collaborator Zach Gage said it best as he opened this GDC session’s string of miniature rants from well-known developers: “This has been a very intense year for the indie scene.”

Now a fixture on the GDC schedule, this year’s Indie Soapbox offered paeans to bravery, tips on how to avoid shame, and former Journey developer Robin Hunicke, now at San Francisco studio Funomena, closed the session by stating her hope to see games do a better job of expressing exactly these kinds of emotions.

Gage began by calling 2013 “one of the best years” for the indie scene. It was “a year of advocacy and inclusion, a year of arguments. We’ve gone from what is art, to what is games, to what is indie,” he said, “But I feel that games, more than any other medium, are a representation of ourselves. I was thinking a lot about that dumb idea of corporations as people – if they can be, then games are people too. A game like Bejeweled laughs heartily at our jokes whether they’re funny or not…Spelunky is the kind of cool kid who puts up barriers before they let you in.

“The greatest games are the ones we never truly understand, even as their creator. This is how games keep us humble. Every game we release is an expedition into the unknown, every game designer is an astronomer discovering new universes; as long as we keep up the bravery, everything is going to work out great.”

“As long as we keep up the bravery, everything

is going to work out great” – Zach Gage

Ethan Levy, a challenging inclusion in the soapbox as an in-game monetization-focused consultant, followed this call for bravery with a discussion of the ‘indie game shame spiral.’ “Every game starts with a eureka moment; an idea you are intensely passionate about,” he began. “You start with a big to-do list, time passes and you find yourself getting through less of it than you hoped. So you start to get depressed about your lack of progress, which drains your motivation, which drives you even deeper into a pit of despair…before long, your behaviour starts to change. Maybe you start taking longer lunch breaks, maybe what you have to get done before you can get to coding becomes more and more. And all that time, a new idea is growing for a new game. So you abandon the original idea and start working on something new. It’s a proven way to never, ever ship a game.”

Levy provided a range of ideas to “claw your way out of” the shame spiral, such as managing your own time the way you would manage a team’s, ensuring you have realistic expectations of what you can get done and regularly performing ‘personal post-mortems’. “If you waste an entire afternoon arguing with someone on Reddit, you have to call yourself out on it,” he said.

The message from Robin Hunicke, who recently formed her studio Funomena with Keita Takahashi, was clear: “I believe in feelings. And especially lately I’ve been thinking about how feelings are important to game design. When we start designing a game, I think feelings are a good place to start: what are you trying to make the player feel?”

“When we start designing a game, I

think feelings are a good place

to start: what are you trying to make

the player feel?” – Robin Hunicke

“Have we given up on some feelings because they are harder to express than others?” asked Hunicke. “Or do we think that perhaps we as game designers can’t really express these things we find in ourselves? I find myself wondering and daydreaming what it would be like if we could interact with these feelings in some way. I find myself hoping that there are some games out there like this just waiting for us to reach them.”

Feelings “help us understand and appreciate each other,” Hunicke concluded. “Feelings make us human.”

News::Endless Backlog: Titanfall Review

If you go into this as someone who buys into hype trains, you're just setting yourself up for a disappointment as Titanfall isn't a game that is meant for anyone that isn't still into multiplayer. For those of you that are into multiplayer or want something just different enough to get you back into it for a little while longer? Titanfall is that game, and it's a very focused multiplayer experience. It's a change of pace from the annual Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Halo entry. Titanfall is also an argument against those 3 franchises that shows that you don't always have to reinvent the wheel to make something interesting again. Instead, you should at the least consider switching the style up and watch the money pile up (yes, massive grin when I wrote that). Titanfall is an example of how important the flow of a multiplayer game is, and for now that's more than enough to make it worth a spin. So adjust your expectations accordingly, and join the action.

News::Elder Scrolls Online PixelJudge Preview

While The Elder Scrolls Online doesn't break any new ground in its initial stages, it does put a definite Elder Scrolls stamp on an otherwise traditional MMO beginning. You start off as a prisoner (were you expecting something else?) in the realm of the daedric lord Molag Bal. Your escape, like in other Elder Scrolls games, lets you pick up your first weapon and choose your character's skills. There are plenty of opportunities for experience right off the bat - I was able to get to level two before leaving The Wailing Prison, where you begin the game. The mood of that place screams malevolence. The prison is dim and dark, lined in an eerie blue. In the background, the music thrums with malign intent. You just know that you're in a bad place.

News::Valve Allows Publishers to Police Themselves

CCC Says: "It kind of feels like game publishing has come full circle. Back in the early days of game publishing, anyone could make any game they wanted. Thats why you saw so many blatant clones and rip-offs, and also why you saw weird games like Burger Time, or even porn games like Custers Revenge. You could basically get whatever you wanted published without anyone stopping you. Then, as video games became a more respected and professional medium, publishers started throwing their weight around and coming down hard on clones and unlicenced games. Now, in the world of indie-publishing and self-publishing, we are once again opening up the floodgates to games like Custers Revenge, for the sake of other indie masterpieces like FEZ. How will the current gaming atmosphere deal with the inevitable influx of self-published genetalia!? No one gaming company can police every self-published game, can they? Would it even be self-publishing at that point?"

VRFocus - The Oculus Rift works. As insane as it may sound, its possible to slip on the much anticipated virtual reality (VR) headset and feel like youve stepped into another world. The problem? Right now you can only take our word for it. This isnt a matter of powerhouse visuals that can be showcased with a simple trailer or motion controllers that can be demonstrated live, this is a technology that truly needs to be seen to be believed. Unless youre lucky enough to own a developer kit or youve sampled the Oculus Rift at an event, its hard to imagine it really working. That perception is something that Oculus Rift creators Oculus VR and all other VR outlets are going to struggle with throughout the next few years.
