United Front Games, the studio best known for developing Sleeping Dogs, has today closed its doors. And it seems the move was sudden.
It seems that United Front Games, the developer behind Sleeping Dogs, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, Modnation Racers, and LittleBigPlanet Karting, has closed its doors in Vancouver, Canada with reports that all employees were let go sometime today. This news comes the day after its latest game Smash+Grab was available to play for free on Steam, which has now been removed from purchase.
This is pretty sad news all around. From what I'm told, Sleeping Dogs was quite good and I remember enjoying the developer's kart racers when I played them. I wish the best for all those who lost their jobs today, as I know what it is like to lose your job out of nowhere. It sucks.

HBO’s Westworld is draped with the trappings of the horror, action adventure, Western, and horror genres, but it’s best understood as a mystery. The show doesn’t exactly have a coherent, unified plot so much as a tableau of vignettes and characters whose interconnectedness is only vaguely clear. The more that the show reveals about its setting, the less straightforward it all is.

The 600th episode of The Simpsons aired last night, and if you blinked, you might have missed an easter egg or two referencing 90's car brawler Twisted Metal. Those familiar with the series may remember that each of the unique vehicles has an EXTREEEME driver with their own biography and motivation listed in the manual. Two of these seem to have been snuck in during the show's first segment, Dry Hard.
The segment begins as a Hunger Games parody before transitioning into Mad Max: Fury Road. Just after the shift (at about 6:40), Springfieldites tear across the wasteland in strange vehicles to attack Burns' private reservoir, and two of these seem inspired by Twisted Metal's Axel and Shadow.
Axel's name is a pun based on the idea that he is a living axle, caught between two giant wheels. In the US, he was the cover model for Twisted Metal 2. On The Simpsons, he was represented by Mike Tyson parody Drederick Tatum, though the wheels aren't quite as large on Tatum's rig.
Shadow is a hearse rigged up with machine guns and spiky bits on the front, driven by Mortimer the undertaker in earlier games, and by goth girl Raven in more recent entries. It's a little harder to see, but you can make out a hearse being driven by Kearny behind Groundskeeper Willy as the Doof Warrior.
If you missed the episode, you can check it out on Fox.com. In my opinion this wasn't one of the best Halloween episodes, but it was nice to see a relatively obscure game franchise get a mention.

It's way easier to get people to play a game if they already have the equipment, nearly everyone carries a smartphone around these days. I've found that it's far less intimidating to get a group together to play Jackbox games than it is to pass out complicated controllers and explain button configurations. Since all that's required is a touchscreen and internet access, you don't even need a smartphone to join in. At my house, we've lent people who don't have their phones a Kindle tablet or a Wii U GamePad, and they were able to play along just fine.
Ease of access is just part of the formula though, and it wouldn't mean much if the games you were trying to share with your friends weren't any good. Fortunately, The Jackbox Party Pack 3 more than delivers on the promise of quality made by its predecessors. This year's installment continues to demonstrate that no one (no, not even them) makes a better party game. Each of the Jackbox games vary slightly in quality and complication, but all of them are simple enough that everyone can play. More importantly, they're enough fun to keep people coming back. It's a party in a box, just like it says on the label.

Because Civ's gameplay doesn't necessarily translate to trailers, this steers clear of it. Instead, it's a trip through time as mankind invents, fights, and progresses its way into the future. My, how far we've come.
Civilization VI releases on October 21. Those who want to play their part in advancing societies can do so then. Everyone else can take the easy way out by peeping this fantastic trailer now.
Endless Legend, a very good 4X strategy game for the PC, got a new expansion last week. It’s a good time.
When I think of THX, I think of its logo, that distinct before-the-movie "Deep Note," and also this wide-eyed creature. But, going forward, maybe I'll think about Razer, too.
The gaming hardware maker has acquired THX for an undisclosed amount, though the company will operate as an "independent startup" with its existing management and "have discretion to seek agreements with other product makers, service providers, and financial partners apart from Razer."
According to Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan, "This acquisition will allow us to reinforce Razer's leadership in gaming and extend the brand into broader areas of entertainment, while at the same time empowering THX to develop into a global powerhouse, independently."
"With Razer," says THX CEO Ty Ahmad-Taylor, "we can now continue to strengthen our core lines of business while delivering excellence for our customers' ever-changing needs. As a standalone company, THX will work with Razer but will primarily continue to service our partners in the industry in order to deliver great products to consumers."
I'm unsure how this will specifically play out longer-term, but for now, I'm just surprised by the move. I guess I didn't realize Razer was in a place to pick up THX, or THX was looking to sell. Ahmad-Taylor elaborated on the decision in a blog post, noting that the sale gives them a "rock-solid foundation" and that he "wouldn't be surprised if we launched a few joint products with Razer."
There's also virtual reality to consider. "As gaming bridges into VR, we expect to play a leadership role in the audio portion of that experience, which is crucial for completion the immersion into virtual worlds."

I'm not so sure Dark Souls III players will ever see a satisfying conclusion to the game's ongoing and still-disappointing poise stat saga, but there is a curious new chapter. With the next patch dropping on Friday for all platforms, From Software is tweaking a bunch of values, fixing bugs, and also setting the table for the Ashes of Ariandel DLC. But then there's this bullet point, which jumps right off the screen:
"Adjusted poise values across the board. Poise is now more effective for heavier weapons and armor."
Cue wild speculation based on a not-informative-enough description.
I can't help but feel that Dark Souls III's poise stat will never do precisely what players believe it should do (which is to say function the same as it did in prior games), but I'd love to be proven wrong whether it's in this patch or a future one. Give us more of an incentive to rock that heavy gear, please!

If you're still feeling drowsy, I can personally confirm that this trailer will wake you the hell up. It's for Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope, which arrived on Steam Early Access today with current support for HTC Vive (and eventual support for Oculus Rift, once the Touch controllers are out).
As previously touched on, Croteam is looking to get this through Early Access in around six months or so depending on how player feedback shapes development. The store page has a breakdown of exactly what's in the current build in terms of missions, weapons, and enemy types, as well as what's yet to come, so you'll know what you're getting into here. In short, it's standard Serious Sam fare but up close.
For launch week, there's a 20 percent discount, bringing Serious Sam VR from $39.99 to $31.99. And if you don't care one bit about virtual reality, the company has marked down the earlier Serious Sam games by 90 percent. That's worth looking into, actually!

Nostalgia sells, and Emily Is Away Too is selling it, again. The bing of AOL Instant Messenger loading up, the door-opening creak of a friend logging on (or a special sound for your crush)—the facets of our youth that live on in outdated software are re-livable in the upcoming 2017 sequel to interactive fiction title Emily Is Away. The game’s 2015 rendition is now available for free on Steam.
The opening scene in Cute Demon Crashers is a bored, horny, virgin college girl who’s home alone during spring break. Suddenly three incubi and a succubus, male and female sex demons, appear out of a portal in her hallway. The player is then faced with one question: how does the virgin react? (NSFW content warning.)
New York Giants wideout Odell Beckham Jr. was in Dreamland yesterday, and it's not just because he wore a pair of Kirby-emblazoned cleats. The talented "distraction" sucked up almost everything thrown his way to the tune of 8 catches for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Here's what his kicks looked like:

Settlers of Catan is one of those games that everyone should have on their shelves, and Amazon’s marked it down to $32 today. That’s within a few cents of the lowest price Amazon’s ever listed. Unfortunately, they won’t trade it to you for two wheats; I asked.
Weird sports games are good sports games. More often than not, that has been my experience. And Headmaster, one of the early games out for the PlayStation VR, is most certainly weird.
After strapping in, you'll come to find that you're stuck inside the "Football Improvement Centre," a sort of soccer prison, and the only way to gain your freedom is to compete in trials to prove your excellence.

We interrupt your news feed to give you a very pretty game for free -- the devs of Pankapu have showered us with 100 Steam codes and one of them could be yours! Simply drop a comment below and you'll be selected at random to win a free copy of the game.
What the hell is Pankapu, you ask? It's a gorgeous side-scrolling platformer that came out of a Kickstarter endorsed by the Square Enix Collective, and made by French studio Too Kind. The game features three fighter classes that you can switch to in real-time, and has a lovely father-to-son backstory about overcoming fears. It's also a Greelnight game, and the Steam reviews are Very Positive (57) at the time of this writing. The game was recently released and it's on sale now for $4.99 for PC, Mac, and Linux.
Contest hopefuls: please make sure your email address is up to date so you don't miss the code by mail. Huge Members, you're already grandfathered in. I'm painfully notifying the winners one by one this weekend so please bare with me. ;) Good luck!
[Disclosure: I was not paid a penny nor a franc to write this and haven't had a drunken orgy with the developers yet, they just reached out randomly and thought you'd dig it. Go indies!]
Gonner is a roguelike platformer that does not care if you think it’s too hard. When you’re playing, you tend not to care, either. It’s so damn cute and smart that every punishment, even the ones you might not deserve, is easily forgiven.
The best episode of Party Down (tied with every other episode) is “Not On Your Wife Opening Night,” in part because of its pitch-perfect community theater parody. There’s something honorable about the earnest “let’s put on a show!” mentality, even if the end result is less than stellar.
Yikes, what an on-the-nose comparison. 100ft Robot Golf is not a new episode of Party Down, which is the saddest thing I’ve ever had to write. Rather, the game feels like a community theater video game. Two people made this goofy video game about robots golfing and recruited their friends to help out -- the fact that Robot Golf exists at all is really neat and speaks to the often loose, collaborative nature of the games industry.
Too bad about the game itself. The chaos implied by 100ft Robot Golf’s wild, imaginative title never fully materializes, instead leaving players with some fine jokes, obvious anime references, and a kinda crummy golf game. We’ve seen video games designed specifically for Let’s Players, but this is a rare example of a game that is best experienced through a Let’s Play.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare hasn’t particularly had my interest but after playing a weekend of its multiplayer, I’m impressed. Running around as a machine gun armed robo-soldier was a damn good time.
