News:: The Great Retro Quiz Reboot: The Legend of Zelda

Merry Switchmas! Like many of you, I've spent the last couple of days exploring the various nooks and crannies of Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I've really been enjoying how I can take the game with me into any room in the house, but then again, I was one of those weirdos who would play the Wii U in bed from time to time.

Anyway, the whole world is diving into a Zelda title right now, which makes this the perfect time to put up a retro quiz about the series! Now, Chad did cover The Legend of Zelda in a retro quiz back in 2007, but his quiz only covered the original game. This one will take a look at the entire 30 year history of the franchise.

What would a quiz be without prizes? I have some options for our eventual winner this time. Whoever gets the most questions correct will get a code for their choice of the following: Drive!Drive!Drive! (PS4), Nights of Azure (Steam) or Altelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book (Steam). You can leave your answers in the comments below, and we'll leave it open until 12:01 AM Pacific time on March 12. If there's a tie, whoever gets their answers posted first will be the winner. When you're writing your answers in the comments, be sure to mention which prize you'd like. Official rules follow the end of the quiz. Let's get started!

News:: Is the community excited for NieR: Automata?

It feels like it's been forever since I first heard of NieR: Automata's development, all the way up to its release. As a fan of Platinum Games, I had just finished up Legend of Korra (which is not bad so don't start) and to my memory, Transformers Devastation wasn't out yet. It was the announcement of NieR: Automata -- a game series born from Square Enix but with Platinum Games' hand touching it -- that made me feel that if I was ever going to own a seventh-generation console, it was going to be a PS4 because of this game.

News:: Nintendo Switch game saves can't transfer between systems

It's not just your Nintendo Account that latches on to one Switch at a time -- your game saves are stuck, too. Nintendo has quietly posted word that saves are stored exclusively to the console's built-in storage, so you can't just transfer your progress to another system like you could (however awkwardly) with the Wii U or 3DS. If you're determined to complete Legend of Zelda, you'll have to finish it on the system where you started.

News:: What I really think the Dead or Alive series says about violence against women

I made a guest appearance on the Polygamer podcast to announce that I'm on not one, not two, but four panels at PAX East this year. The podcast, and list of panels I'll be appearing on, can be found here

I didn't spend much time talking about the panels though, as there isn't a whole to say about them until they happen. Instead, host Ken Gagne and I talked about the recent kerfuffle surrounding children's entertainer Pewdiepie, the difference between being a part of the games media as a hobby and just calling it a hobby in order to try to sound like an "everyman", the good and bad motivations one might have for using the Gamergate hashtag, being a voice actor on 2064: ROM, my time as Destructoid Editor in Chief, and a whole lot more.

Weirdly enough, an offhand comment I made about the Dead or Alive series seems to be the part of the show that interested people the most. In fact, at least one person has gone on to write their own analytical essay about my off-the-cuff comments. Isn't that weird? It's also a shame, because I did a terrible job of making my point clear on the podcast in the first place. It wasn't a priority for me. In fact, I had completely forgotten I said anything about the series until people started coming after me on Twitter for it.

But hey, if my opinion about Dead or Alive and the ideas it shares about violence against women is that interesting to people, I guess I might as well spend thirty minutes writing about it in more detail for this web log (another word for 'blog'). It's the least that I can do, for you, the readers of Destructoid, com.

News:: Review: Malicious Fallen

In this generation, getting remastered versions of last-generation games shouldn’t be a strange concept – we have seen it before with titles like Darksiders, The Last of Us, Halo 4 (via MCC), and Final Fantasy X/X-2, and we'll continue to see it with releases like Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix.

Both Malicious and Malicious Rebirth, which released on PS3 and PS Vita respectively, join the pool of remastered games on PS4, branded as Malicious Fallen and enhanced with PlayStation 4 Pro support and 60 frames per second. In addition to the performance improvements, Fallen also brings new episodes called Pursuit and Demise – two new chapters that conclude the Malicious saga.

News:: PREPARE TO FRIENDSHIP: Dtoid's Master Gaming Contact List

[I have heard this "Nintendo Switch" thing is pretty popular with the kids these days. So I have taken it upon myself to add Switch Friend Codes to the vast amount of data I will be keeping track of. The List will be updated into perpetuity -Panda]

Good morning/afteroon/tomorrow, my friends/robots/Gardevoir

It has been made aware to me that, just perhaps, you all enjoy video games. It might even be said that you... like to game with others? Now now, don't be that way, I don't mean to lump you into some sort of box. You're all just such lovely folks, it pains me to watch you, struggling in vain to connect with each other, striving to engage in...

News:: Play laser tag in the real world with this smartphone attachment

Playing laser tag is fun, but in order to do so, you have to go to a special venue, get specialized equipment and basically block off the entire day. With Proxy49's Inceptor, however, you don't have to. This little accessory combined with a game called Father.io essentially changes any smartphone into a mobile laser tag machine, without the need for a plastic toy gun attachment.

News:: Game of Thrones should get the Warriors treatment next

It's a good time to be a Warriors/Musou fan. For us in the west, we just got our hands on Berserk and the Band of the Hawk, which according to Chris is pretty darn good. Later this month, our friends over in Japan get their first crack at Musou Stars, a game I personally can't wait to play. Not long after that is Dragon Quest Heroes II, Samurai Warriors: Spirit of Sanada, and eventually Fire Emblem Warriors and the potentially game-changing Dynasty Warriors 9.

There are so many coming our way, and yet somehow I want more. After Hyrule Warriors and Dragon Quest Heroes proved to be global successes, I thought about other series that would work perfectly with the Musou formula. The first thing that popped into my mind and never left? Game of Thrones.

It seems obvious given the show’s popularity around the world, but that doesn’t make it any less of a perfect candidate for the Warriors treatment. When I think of these games, I think of large casts, massive battlefields, exotic locations, crap-load of lore to work with and grand battles. Game of Thrones checks off all of those. I can’t be the only one who watched the Battle of the Bastards and thought, “Oh shit, this would be so cool as a Warriors game.”

I know, there isn’t a lot of variation when it comes to weaponry. Most people use swords and shields that can get a bit boring. But there are so many more options. Embrace Melisandre’s connection to the Lord of Light and have her use fire-based Magic Attacks. Have Bran control Hodor and other creatures to attack for him, knocking them into the air allowing him to finish the combo as the raven. Make all of Tyrion’s attacks speeches he gives to get himself out of trouble. Jaime can use his gold hand and sword as a unique combo. That fucking nun with the bell can shame people to death like Marin from Hyrule Warriors. Use your imagination people!

There are so many options with the dozens of available characters, so many grand and memorable locations to utilize, and so many epic battles to recreate. I would kill for the chance to lay waste to the Sons of the Harpy in the arena as Daenerys and her dragons or to stomp all over Ramsey’s men with Wun Weg Wun Dar Wun. Come on Omega Force, make this happen! Game of Thrones is such a perfect series to spin into the Warriors formula that I bet none of the other writers at Destructoid can come up with an idea half as good.
