News:: Two weeks later, top groups are starting to clear Final Fantasy XIV's 'Ultimate' raid tier

In mid October, Final Fantasy XIV's new "Ultimate" raid, The Unending Coil of Bahamut, dropped. Meant for the top of the top (read: you have to beat a raid tier only 1-10% of any given server has cleared to even enter), this challenge is an experiment of sorts to see if Square Enix can keep people interested during "catchup" patches, when a new raid tier is in limbo.

For nearly two weeks, Ultimate went uncleared, but now people are starting to finish it. The below unnamed group cleared it first, but the Free Company (guild) Angered has since cleared, as well as Elysium, Gabagool, and Stardom. As a reminder, this is sort of an all-stars fight with several big bosses from the very first Bahamut-themed raid that debuted in the 2.0 edition of the game several years back. It's a roughly 20 minute battle without checkpoints, and if you mess up, you'll start the boss rush all over again from the very beginning.

Now that clear videos and guides are starting to roll out we'll probably see a few more completions, but the barrier of entry is so high that they're not going to be widespread. Honestly, I love that idea. The journey that the community has taken these past few weeks to collectively clear it for the common good has been amazing -- and I like the idea that players are still going to be theorycrafting it for weeks to come.
