News::Steamworks made available for all developers

Steamworks, the API that drives Steam’s backend, has been made available for free for any developers that wish to submit games to Steam Greenlight.

By using Steamworks, developers will be able to utilize Steam’s variety of network services relatively easily. By implementing the service, they’ll have access to things like matchmaking, anti-cheat services, and cloud saves. By downloading the Steamworks SDK, they will be able to test all of these services before being accepted into Valve’s store itself.

Now, this isn’t a huge change, as anyone accepted through the Greenlight system is automatically granted access to Steamworks, but it could be a step towards giving developers the option to self-publish on Steam, rather than having to go through the curation process.

We’ve sent word to Valve to ask for more information.
