News:: Mafia III is locked to 30fps on PC

When Mafia III releases tomorrow, PC players won't have a significant technical edge over console users -- at least not in the ever-hallowed "frames per second" category. On the eve of its launch, 2K has confirmed that the PC version of the game runs at what many will consider to be a sub-standard state.

In a brief post on the game's site, 2K cops to the fact that Mafia III is locked at 30 frames per second on PC. That's exactly half the frames most players would like to see, and others won't be able to push the limits of their rigs to take it as high as they can. For what it's worth, the publisher says it's a "solid" 30fps, indicating that there shouldn't be much in the way of technical hiccups.

2K seems to realize that many will find this unacceptable, as the post goes on to say "We are currently working on an update for PC that will give players the option to play Mafia III at higher framerates. We're actively considering a number of additional post-launch improvements on PC that would give players more control over how they can tailor the game's experience to suit their rig's performance."

It's worth mentioning that if PC is locked to 30fps, the console versions will also run at that level. On the bright side, maybe the technical limitations will make this feel more like the '60s action noir film that it wants to be. Glass half full and all.
