News::Call of Duty: Ghosts Free-for-All Tips

Bill Lavoy (Prim Games): Call of Duty: Ghosts has incredibly fun multiplayer modes. In the case of Free-for-All, you can add tough to that description. The fact that many players will never win a match shouldn't discourage frequent participation. After all, we improve by testing ourselves against those who are better. Implement some of our tips, develop some of your own and you'll be at the top of scoreboard in no time.

News::Spearhead: We found Sony more helpful than MS or Nintendo

Making a brand new game studio isn't easy. So imagine the undertaking of creating a new brand, crafting a never-before-seen IP, gathering a production crew, and shipping a game in a year. That's what Spearhead Studios did with Tiny Brains , and they went through quite the adventure to do it.

I had a chat with Spearhead's Simon Darveau and Malik Boukhira to find out what makes an indie studio tick, what they've learned so far, and what they have planned for the future.

News::Games with Gold: Dead Island, Toy Soldiers: Cold War

Microsoft's Games with Gold promotion is becoming a parody of itself. In February, Xbox Live Gold subscribers are once again getting two free titles, one that is the first installment of a popular franchise, and another that's an enjoyable but perhaps under-appreciated Xbox Live Arcade title. Those are Dead Island and Toy Soldiers: Cold War, respectively.

As ever, the first free game -- in this case, Dead Island -- will become free for Gold members on the first of the month. So, tomorrow. You'll then have until February 16 to download it at which point game number two, Cold War , goes free for the rest of the month.

You really should make a note to download that second one, though -- you get to shoot at tanks as an offbrand Rambo toy. It's pretty special. I also much preferred its setting over the first Toy Soldiers, so if you resisted it for similar reasons, consider getting the sequel.

News::'Silent Hill 2' Review: Tense, Tragic And Terrifying | Bloody Disgusting

BD writes: "Theres a reason why we still bang on about Silent Hill 2. Almost fifteen years have passed since we first stepped into James Sunderlands heavy footsteps and peered at that bloodstain through the fog, and were still obsessing over the intricacies of his journey, as though deconstructing the individual parts of this game might offer up the secrets of its oh-so-terrifying alchemy. For many (unashamedly, myself included) Silent Hill 2 remains the crowning achievement of the Silent Hill series. Reknown for its hitherto unique approach to survival horror so at odds with Resident Evils combat-heavy blueprint it was Silent Hill 2 that picked up the legacy set by the series disturbing first title, and birthed one of horror gamings most darkly disquieting offerings. The thing with Silent Hill 2 is, it crawls beneath your skin. And you dont even know its doing it."

News::Europa Universalis IV: Conquest of Paradise Review | Saving Content

Excerpt: "This of course is one of the up-front problems of Conquest of Paradise, the game can stray from the history books from the get-go. This is whether you have random terrain, or take a nation not known for discovering new lands into being the first to discover America before Columbus could do so in 1492. Though not far off from how the base game works, those looking to maintain historical accuracy are free to do so, but becomes increasingly difficult to maintain."

News::Loadout - As We Play I Expansive DLC

2014 will unquestionably see a more-considered movement toward the F2P game becoming a mainstay in the household. Titles like Warframe, Blacklight Retribution, War Thunder, World of Tanks amongst others are already hugely successful and enjoying high figures of active users. Naturally, success breeds emulation, duplication and multiplication. And just a few weeks into the year, the first major attempt at infiltrating that market has already reared its head. Edge of Reality feel confident that Loadout is ready to move out of Early Access, officially launching the game today. This F2P hits hard and early with outrageous characterisation, immensely generous flexibility and ferocious violence. But after a few hours of play, we have serious concerns as to whether this is really ready for public consumption. Despite the fantastic ideas engineering it, Loadout struggles to handle its core business: Online multiplayer.

News::Friday Night Fights: SK8 or die!

Look, I make no bones about how old I am. I've never hid my age from anyone and I know my limits. Turning 40, as I recently did, tends to make people feel like, they need to finally grow up, finally become an adult.

To hell with that, I say! Just because I'm getting older doesn't mean I have to stop doing the things I enjoy, no friggin way! I still skate with my friends, I still skate vert ramps with my friends, sure it hurts more the next day but I can't see myself stopping anytime soon.

Same goes for gaming, I may not have as much time as I once did , but I'm not gonna stop any time soon. I've found that, the older I get, the more appreciation I have for the smaller things, I've noticed my likes and dislikes towards gaming have changed, where once I was very vocal about all the hullabaloo in the industry, now I just, sit back and not worry so much. I'd rather spend my time having fun and enjoying myself than sitting around always pissing and moaning about stuff that, has little to no bearing on my life.

Anyway, sorry to rant like that, I just felt like I needed to get that off my chest.

News::Sci-fi horror Master Reboot coming to PS3 next month

Don't have a next-gen console yet? Pish posh. Who needs 'em? Especially when the current/previous gen is still getting cool new games. Next month, the psychological sci-fi horror game Master Reboot is coming to PS3. Here's an explanation from Managing Director David Banner:

To house your Soul, a family member (or yourself before you die) purchases an island on the Soul Cloud where the server will generate rooms, houses or skyscrapers that hold each and every memory from the deceased’s past, or of memories of their choosing. The game starts with you being uploaded to the Soul Cloud but something has gone wrong and you wake up on a beach not knowing who or where you are. It’s up to you to explore, solve puzzles and try to piece together your life and death.

If you check out the PlayStation Blog post you'll find more haunting, colorful scenes. The sense of something being not quite right Master Reboot is attempting to instill is a nice alternative to the shock and gore horror sect. Very Lovecraftian in its gaps. The scariest things are the unknown, after all.

News::We Talk About 'Heroes of a Broken Land' With Andrew Ellem | Hardcore Gamer

It's not easy making video games, especially when you're a team of one. It also doesn't help if your ambitions are as far-reaching as those in Heroes of a Broken land. You see, Andrew Ellem -- creator of Winged Pixel, developer of Heroes of a Broken Land, designer of graphics, and lover of the finer things in life -- wasn't satisfied with sticking to a single genre. "Nope, that's for the weak," he probably said as he typed up another line of code, taking a sip from his flask. Instead, Andrew opted to meld his various ideas into a single experience, and allow players the freedom of a classic turn-based RPG, dungeon crawler and town management simulator without compromising an ounce of quality.

News::Zynga buys NaturalMotion for $527M, cuts workforce 15%

Zynga has made its first big move under new CEO and former Microsoft head Don Mattrick, acquiring CSR Racing developer NaturalMotion for $527 million. The UK and US-based developer did well for itself with the mobile hit CSR Racing, but is also known for technologies used in big-budget console development, including the Euphoria physics engined licensed and used by Rockstar in Grand Theft Auto IV and V.

Zynga is dropping $391 in cash on the deal and making up the rest with 39.8M Zynga shares, Venture Beat reports. 11.6M shares are going to NaturalMotion employees who are joining Zynga.

Meanwhile, adhering to equivalent exchange, Zynga is once again laying its own people the heck off, to the tune of 314 jobs. That's 15% of its workforce and more jobs cut than the entire 260-person staff at NaturalMotion.

Cutting 15% of its staff is expected to save Zygna $35 million in 2014, which doesn't seem like all that much when you just orchestrated a $527 million acquisition, but that's why I don't wear a moneyhat.

News::Iwata: Nintendo 'should abandon old assumptions'

Nintendo CEO Saturo Iwata had more to say following the earlier espoused plans to turn Wii U sales around, which include some mystery, non-wearable fitness advocacy device. Speaking to The Nikkei, as picked up by MCV, Iwata explained, "[W]e've been preoccupied with a fixed idea of what a game should be like. The game industry is at a turning point amid new developments like the rise of smartphones."

Of course, Nintendo has also explained it does not want its games on smart phones, but says, "We'll change the way we sell products, by managing customer information via the Internet. We'll offer discounts to steady, regular customers."

While it's nice to joke about Nintendo thinking that "using the internet" is a dramatic shift, my ears perked up at 'offering discounts to steady customers.' Nintendo is infamously against devaluing its games, leaving its first party software at launch price for years before cuts. It'll be interesting to see what it does with that.

Iwata also said, more generally, "We should abandon old assumptions about our businesses. We are considering M&As as an option. For this reason, we'll step up share buybacks," and explained that the companies previously built up cash reserves have kept them going. "Without savings, we could not have recovered from a single failure in game systems. Even now, we can afford many options because of our robust financial standing."

Nintendo opening up to the idea of mergers and acquisitions to stabilize its business is the most potentially interesting bit in there, though. Maybe they'll be acquired by Sony? (It's a joke, don't kill me)

This is a game a lot of people have been waiting for. One of the first ridiculously-successful Kickstarter games, this is certainly the most well-known, putting the model on the map. Its goal was to prove that the adventure game was in demand, and that the nostalgia for Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle could be recaptured. As mechs rip opposing pilots out of their cockpit and thrash them by the leg, tearing every tendon and breaking every bone in their knees, and jetpack clad folks run up walls, I'm struggling to see why so many people are down on Titanfall as more of the same. News::Check out the 10 games in this Vita indie game bundle

I've made no secret of my desire to buy a PS Vita soon, mainly as it's one of the cheaper platforms out there. Getting a bunch of games included with your console is always a draw and this upcoming Vita Indie Games Mega Pack is definitely appealing. There's some great games from the last few years included, like Hotline Miami , Thomas Was Alone , and Limbo . The bundle is going to retail for €24.99 which includes a 4GB memory card and a voucher to download the included titles.

Of course, there's some games I'm not especially interested in playing like Coconut Dodge and Floating Cloud God Saves The Pilgrims in HD (actually, that last one does sound kinda cool) and to be honest I've already played a lot of the big titles in that bundle.

Maybe if a couple of games were swapped out for titles like Spelunky, Frobisher Says, and Soundshapes I'd be more inclined to buy. Still if you fancy it, the bundle will be out in February along with a €199.99 option that includes a Vita with all 10 games.

For years I've been searching for a modern Dungeon Keeper-esque game but nothing has been able to hit all of the right notes for me. Maybe that's nostalgia speaking. From the look of it, not even a game literally called "Dungeon Keeper " will do the job.

Developed by EA Mythic, this is a free-to-play title available now for Android and iOS. The more I look at it, the less faithful to the original Bullfrog games it appears to be. The increased focus on social and in-app purchases are one thing, but this new Dungeon Keeper just seems like a standard tower defense title geared toward mobile platforms more than anything.

Guess I'll just stick with the classics on GOG.com.

News::Enemy Front is a fresh approach to World War II shooters

Back in 2011 City Interactive announced Enemy Front , a World War II shooter that was being worked on by Stuart Black who was the guy responsible for Black. It's funny how over-hyped that game was looking back.

Anyway, Black left at some point in 2012 and since then Enemy Front was completely reworked. It's still a World War II shooter, but instead of just being another colorless run-and-gun shooter like Call of Duty, the developers at CI have taken more of a fresh approach to the genre that made me think of it as a nice cross between Bad Company and Far Cry 3 during my hands-on time.

News::Detective Grimoire Review | Hardcore Droid

Hardcore Droid: "Detective Grimoire is a stylish game. In fact, its stylish enough to make me wonder if it can stand on that alone. In pop culture, style often dominates over substance. Audiences were dazzled by John Camerons Avatar, in spite of the fact that its story was just a gussied up Dances with Wolves. Lady Gaga is beloved and her music is meticulously produced, but her lyrics arent exactly incisive (Ill direct you to a line from G.U.Y: Love me, love me, please retweet). Bioshock Infinite was released last year to rave reviews and commended for its stunning graphics, but some critics felt unfulfilled by the games message, wondering if the storywriters even knew what message they were trying to convey. Detective Grimoire is not a blockbuster or a platinum singer or part of an enormous franchise, but despite its humbler beginnings, its got a lot of style. But is that enough?"

After impressing backers on Kickstarter two years ago, culminating in pledges seven times what the developers were seeking, and then teasing the combat side of their game via a free-to-play multiplayer game last year, indie studio Stoic have finally released their long awaited campaign-based game, The Banner Saga. The game promises a story-based role-playing experience in which your choices affect how the story unfolds, combined with the tactical turn-based combat demonstrated in their aforementioned multiplayer release, The Banner Saga Factions. In fact, upon starting the campaign, theres a sense of deja vu as it quickly becomes apparent they borrowed the first map wholesale from the campaign to serve as the tutorial in their free-to-play release.

News::Here's what to expect from the Wii U's quick start menu

One of the announcements included in Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata's corporate management policy briefing was an update planned for Wii U this summer which will allow players to get to their games more quickly through the use of a new quick start menu that features recently-played titles. Nintendo wasn't ready to show a real-life demo, but here's what it'll look like.

"We think that this function will make you feel that the time to start up a Wii U software title is cut by more than 50 percent, and that it will also lead to more Wii U users understanding the appealing nature of the GamePad," Iwata said.

I tend to play Wii U games on a television screen when given the choice, but I know a number of you have professed your love of the system's Off-TV Play feature. Certainly a worthwhile update.

Sony has announced the PlayStation Vita Slim for the UK following the model's release in Japan last year. This thinner, lighter system will be available in black on February 7 for £180, which is a higher price than some of us were anticipating considering the move away from the original PS Vita's OLED screen to a less-desirable LCD display. And no extra colors? Darn.

There's still no specifics on a launch in the US, but if the pricing is consistent with what's been announced here, I'm not interested. I figured it would be on par with the current line, not more expensive. If anything, this puts pressure on me to get the non-Slim model before those go away.

News::Octodad: Dadliest Catch review

Publisher/developer: Young Horses Format: PC (version tested), PS4 Release: Out now (PC), March (PS4)

The gag’s a decent one: Octodad is an octopus living among humans, who accept him as their own so long as he’s wearing a suit. Irrespective of his suckered arms and suspiciously poor coordination, our hero lives a reasonable life, having somehow taken a wife and spawned two kids. Best not to ask how that last bit came about, but then Octodad: Dadliest Catch asks you to overlook an awful lot more than plot holes.

Octodad’s controls are best thought of as like Bennett Foddy’s slapstick athletics game QWOP in a 3D space. Squeezing either trigger lifts the corresponding leg, which you manipulate with the left stick. When standing still, the left stick moves your right arm, the right stick raises and lowers it, and RB grabs the nearest object. It’s simple in theory, but being an invertebrate, Octodad is at the constant mercy of his limbs. Walk in long strides and his head and body lurch around with the shifting momentum. He doesn’t grab and push door handles so much as tether himself to them and hope. It’s clear that our paternal cephalopod is built neither for speed nor grace, so it’s all the more baffling that developer Young Horses soon starts asking for both.

Things start out well enough, with the first half of the game’s two-hour runtime making great hay of its physical comedy. You’ll get dressed for your wedding, flinging gifts to dislodge a tie from a stained-glass window, then flop your way to your waiting bride down an aisle cruelly dotted with banana skins. A stint as the doting father sees you spill half a container of milk on the walk from the kitchen to your daughter’s waiting cup. Everything goes horribly wrong at every turn, of course, but it’s supposed to. By wrestling with controls that are cumbersome by design, you just about make it through, and have a fine old time of it.

Octodad’s slapstick elicits plenty of laughs early on, but frustration sets in halfway through its two-hour runtime.

Then it all falls apart. An aquarium visit involves a tortuous series of minigames in an old-fashioned amusement arcade. Octodad’s controls are meant to be imprecise, so a demand that we throw six basketballs through a small hoop sparks ten minutes of wearying frustration. Then comes stealth, of all things, and by the end you’re tiptoeing across rafters that break under heavy footsteps and dodging projectiles thrown by the antagonist, a chef of unidentifiably foreign origin who accosts you at the end of missions for a scripted chase where a single mistake means a restart.

It’s hard to tell quite how things went so wrong. Lacking the confidence to revel in its protagonist’s clumsiness for the entire runtime, Young Horses takes Octodad’s comical core mechanics to places they have no right to go. QWOP, remember, only gave you an athletics track, and with good reason.

News::Sofa Sharers: A New Spit-screen Feature

Split-Screen, couch co-op, just playing with your mates; whatever you want to call it, its dying out. Sure, online gaming has brought people from all over the world together and made it easier to game with your friends, but in my opinion theres nothing that can replace the brilliance of playing a videogame with your friends literally beside you. Why modern game devs dont realise this, I may never know, but this, a new regular feature focusing on the brilliant world of split-screen gaming, aims to bring the injustice into the light. Or, failing that, its a small dedication to couch co-op.

News::The Castle Doctrine Preview (PC) | CriticalIndieGamer

(CriticalIndieGamer) The front door slams open, darkness obscures all but the corridor in front of me. Meticulously I scrutinise the walls for other rooms, knowing that behind any of the doors lays certain death. I tentatively enter a room to find a cowering family before me. Mother, daughter and son scramble out , making a break for the front door. A close call; had they owned a gun, I would be dead. I continued further down the hall, peeking through another door; to my dismay, I was face to face with a bloodthirsty pit bull. Hot on my heels, the ravenous beast chased me back through the hallway and out of the house. I returned home, a little worse for wear, but empty-handed. Crossing the threshold, a pool of blood encircled my shoes. While I was out, my wife had been murdered, and my savings stolen. This is brutal. This is The Castle Doctrine.

News::Nintendo details plan to turn around Wii U sales

Nintendo released their third quarter financial results which revealed an operating loss of over $15 million due to poor Wii U sales. While it wasn't totally bleak in sales in some regards, the company overall failed to meet revised sales projections thus causing Nintendo president Satoru Iwata to cut his salary in half.

So now what? Iwata just held a press conference in Japan tonight and detailed what his plan of attack is to turn the company around. For starters, Iwata stated that they won't be abandoning its hardware business, and game consoles will continue being the center of their strategy. That said, he admitted that adapting to change is necessary.

A revamp to their marketing is coming, with a big focus on the GamePad and it's capabilities, such as pushing the NFC function (tech similar to what Skylanders/Disney Infinity does). He admitted that the Wii U's weakness is the GamePad in that the recognition is low, and that people think it's an accessory for the Wii. Turning this around is the company's highest priority, such as how they'll be revealing new NFC titles at E3. They won't be cutting the price, however. We can also expect high-speed startups, so for instance you can instantly dive into games through the GamePad as your TV is powering up.

News::Pokémon X/Y Beta Competition set for next month

The first Pokémon Global Link tournament to allow Pokémon from the Kalos region happens next month, on Thursday, February 20 at 4:00pm Pacific. Registration details for this Beta Competition will be available at the Pokémon Global Link beginning January 31 but in the mean time, you'll want to register your copy of Pokémon X or Y with the PGL.

According to the announcement, some players are already qualified for the the tournament based on their performance in the Global Showdown. I've always been into Pokémon for the catch-'em-all aspect and never the competitive scene, but that's not to say I'm disinterested in seeing how players make use of the new generation. Quite the opposite.
