Dragon Quest is an institution in Japan. A 30 year institution actually. Although the west doesn't get every game right away, in Japan, a DQ release is a holiday to be celebrated. It's personal for me too -- Dragon Warrior was my first RPG, before I even set foot in the world of Final Fantasy.
There are tons of little stories like that, which is probably why Square Enix is holding a 30 year bash on NHK General TV in Japan on December 29. It'll feature series composer Koichi Sugiyama and creator Yuji Hori, and will touch on Dragon Quest XI as well as provide a retrospective of sorts, in addition to a segment that answers fan submitted questions.
While the US is getting more stuff like eSports being broadcasted on major networks, I'd still love to see more of these types of programs at some point.
