In the wake of last week's Summer sale, it is being reported that upwards of 40,000+ accounts were hit with the banhammer by Steam on grounds of being naughty cheats.
Game-hackers often take advantage of sales to buy up cheap copies of games, such as Counter Strike: GO and Dota 2, on multiple accounts. This allows them to test out various hacks and cheats safe in the knowledge that if the new account is banned, then their "real" account is still safe.
The Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) system went into overdrive on July 5, with the single biggest removal of users in Steam history. Also swept up were over $8,000 in cosmetic items. This could be a sign that Valve is stepping up its commitment toward fair play, it will be interesting to see if the exact same action happens following Steam's next sale.
