As well as a decent sized campaign to work through, there are plenty of special collectible items to forage around for along the way. In threads on NeoGAF, and on the fan forum Castlevania Dungeon, former developers talked openly about how constant changes and lack of communication led to employees coming into conflict with studio director Enric Alvarez and how many of the talent behind the game quit or were laid off throughout development.

Chris West writes: "So I recently finished playing through Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and Ive got to say, I wasnt impressed. The art direction was quite beautiful and the setpieces were done well, but I found the story aspect to be inorganic. The game consisted entirely of unconnected events that are generally considered to be either sad or touching. Considering how much praise this game has been receiving, I welcome all forms of backlash with open arms. While my opinion of Brothers isnt the focus of this article, its place in a pattern of serious and humorless video game narratives is. A narrative featuring serious themes and subjects isnt a bad thing as long as the writing and story is good, but it seems everybody is aiming to make their games dark and depressing because everyone else is doing it."

News::Hedge fund guy suggests mobile Mario with $0.99 high jump

This week, Oasis Management founder Seth Fischer sent a letter to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata explaining why the company should dive right into mobile game development and microtransactions and all of the things we don't want to happen.

Granted, we already know Iwata's stance -- the proliferation of mobile devices "doesn't mean that we should put Mario on smartphones" -- but I think you'll get a kick out of this.

"The same people who spent hours playing Super Mario, Donkey Kong, and Legend of Zelda as children are now a demographic whose engagement on the smartphone is valued by the market at well over $100 billion," Fischer wrote. Nintendo, he feels, is "well placed to make an immediate entry into mobile" with "arguably the largest library of casual games."

Chasing quick money based on what's popular right now. Hmm. That sounds like the opposite of the Nintendo we know and mostly love, but okay. I see where the guy is coming from, more or less. And then we get to the part where the letter straight-up sounds like satire:

"We believe Nintendo can create very profitable games based on in-game revenue models with the right development team. Just think of paying 99 cents just to get Mario to jump a little higher."

Please join me in setting a moment aside to be thankful you aren't the head of Nintendo.

  • Fixed issues during the Level 8 “Marian II” boss fight where players would experience slowdown and sometimes end up crashing.

  • Fixed the resolution issue where some players would have the game load up and hear music and sounds but not see a picture.

  • Fixed the issue where pressing Up on the D-Pad would sometimes cause the player to initiate a high-five on the controller.

  • Fixed issues where some backgrounds in levels were not displaying properly in certain resolutions.

  • Fixed the issue where choosing “Borderless” in Video Options was not working with certain resolutions.

  • Fixed an issue with the Level 8 “Marian II” boss fight so that its arms are no longer off-screen during its idle animation.

  • Added an option in the Settings menu so that mouse and keyboard players have a way to enable Ro-Bro Mode.

  • Additional bug fixes and tweaks to the game.

As of this week, publisher Midnight City has also added the option to buy a two-pack of Neon on Steam for $12.99. (For the sake of comparison, a single copy costs $9.99). Worth considering if you've got a special someone in mind.

News::One Hit Pixel Review: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2

One Hit Pixel: "Not everyone liked MercurySteams revival of the Castlevania franchise. Such decriers are largely those who felt that the in-house development studio at Konami led by Igarashi were perfectly fine without the need for a reboot. The series has gone from many different genres, with its most famous incarnation being the Metroidvania style. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow was mainly criticised for being derivative of the immensely popular games God of War and Shadow of the Colossus, not really focusing on being unique in anything other than setting. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 marks the end of MercurySteams involvement with the series; but while the first was a flawed gem that divided a fan-base, the second game in the franchise has major issues that may unite them once more."

News::Trolls Vs. Vikings Review | GameDynamo

GameDynamo - "Reversing the traditional perception of Trolls as vicious, brainless beasts and Vikings as cheerfully violent heroes, Trolls vs. Vikings portrays the former as peaceful folk who love beauty and the latter as greedy raiders. These Vikings are only after the gold, and the Trolls' village is about to be demolished by their avarice. It's up to the disarmingly cute Trolls to put their talents to work defending their homeland. A tower defence game, along the lines of the wildly popular Plants vs. Zombies games, the Trolls need to defend their peaceful village from advancing waves of pillaging Vikings. It wears its influences clearly, to the point of being derivative, relying on the design and artfulness of the characters, as well as a streamlined in-game economy to differentiate itself, and while both of these strategies are successful, it's not enough to pull the game out from under the Plants vs. Zombies shadow."

News::Review: Gunslugs

Sidescrolling run-and-gun games are, arguably, a classic that never seem to go out of style. Games like Contra and Gunstar Heroes, with their multiple weapon types, hundreds of attacking enemies, and billions of bullets whizzing past your head are a frantic and fun diversion. Naturally if you're going to make a run-and-gun game, these are the key elements you'll want to have present.

Gunslugs borrows heavily from these tropes, but still manages to come up as a unique and fun shooter with a large emphasis on the silly.

GamesAsylum looks back at Ubisoft's I Am Alive: "Its easy to consider I Am Alive as a forbearer to Ubisofts own ZombiU. The difficulty level is challenging but not unfair, while ammo has to be used sparingly. It was undoubtedly Dark Souls which influenced ZombiU the most, but I Am Alive should still be remembered for playing a part in shaping the Wii U system seller"

PJ: First of all, let's address what Hearthstone actually is. Simply put, it is a card game akin to Magic: The Gathering. You have a health pool, a deck, you play cards, things die, and everybody has fun...apart from that guy who lost, of course. What makes it so good however, is Blizzard. Now I am not a Blizzard fanboy, but I must concede that everything Blizzard touches turns to gold. StarCraft is one of the most revolutionary RTSs of all time, with professional tournaments and leagues; Warcraft spawned a community larger than some countries; and Diablo is directly responsible for a global decline in productivity. Hearthstone has some big boots to fill, and my god, they burst at the seams.

Allisa James from DualShockers finds really obscure Japanese indie games and writes about them. This month she cheats a little and writes about Sweet Home, a title that, while technically not "indie," is still an incredibly obscure game that inspired the Resident Evil series. It was the first survival-horror and helped pioneer the genre. Sweet Home is the tale of five people who venture into the abandoned mansion of famed artist Mamiya Ichirou, intent on filming a documentary while trying to restore Mamiyas works. Upon entering the mansion, the group discovers that the ghost of Lady Mamiya, Ichirous wife, haunts the place and she does not intend to let the intruders escape with their lives. The crew must try to find a way out of the haunted mansion alive and lay Lady Mamiya to rest once and for all in the process.

CVG: In his role as VP of PR and marketing at Bethesda, Pete Hines has helped ship some of the company's biggest games, including The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 3. While the company remains coy on the inevitable announcement of Fallout 4, Bethesda will ship three titles this year: Wolfenstein: The New Order, The Evil Within and The Elder Scrolls Online. All are interesting for the way they seem to shirk conventional publishing wisdom in 2014: one is a single-player FPS, another is a survival horror game and the last is a subscription-based MMO. In the interview, conducted during a recent Wolfenstein preview event in Sydney, we touch on Bethesda's willingness to pursue genres and models the rest of the industry is avoiding, the legacy of the Wolfenstein IP, and whether any new titles are set to be announced in 2014.

Like Ubisoft and Assassin's Creed, do you have more money than you know what to do with? Buy these $500 Black Flag bags, then.

Yes, they’re not cheap. But both bags are made with Italian full-grain bovine leather, with authentic details and exquisite workmanship. And both bags are extremely limited: only 100 of each have been produced – so once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.

Actually, I'm cool with both the messenger bag and sailor bag. Game merchandise is usually tacky and cheap. These are actually sort of nice. Not $500 nice, but nice. Maybe reach a healthy middle ground next time, Ubisoft. Something more accessible to all fans than a premium limited 200 run that costs more than the consoles the series is played on.

It reminds me of when Resident Evil 4 came out and I wanted a replica of Leon's jacket. Probably for the best that never happened. What am I, some kind of nerd?

Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw: Someone asked me if I'd have given Dark Souls Game of the Year if I'd gotten into it three years ago. This is a pointless question. No, because I didn't get into it three years ago, because the barrier to entry was completely unreasonable. And all the people singing its praises made me resist it all the harder, due to the unwritten rule that all good things are ruined by their fans. Dark Souls is difficult, and so there's an increased air of smugness in the veteran players, who reply to heartfelt requests for advice with dismissive phrases like "Git gud", forgetting that there but for the grace of God went they.

Blaine Smith of XMMORPG writes: One cannot debate the quality on display in Heartstone. It's arguably one of the best online MMO card games available, although much of the reasoning behind that is due to a lack of any real competition. However, credit where credit is due. Hearthstone is impressive graphically, the cards and artwork are top drawer and the depths of mechanics are on display for all to see. So why do I feel my Hearthstone experience is lacking?

News::Domino's Fire Emblem pizza isn't for Fire Emblem, sadly

Domino's "pizza" is terrible junk I wouldn't eat if I'd ingested a poison for which the only cure was the exact blend of possum endocrine system and Nickelback sweat found in Domino's pizza.

That said, Domino's Japan is at least fun. Last year they had an amazing campaign with my good friend Hatsune Miku. Now they've got something called the "Fire Emblem" pizza. "Girls love hot boys," the pizza description reads. "Same with pizza. Try this pizza, the zingy heat of the jalapenos will surely get you hooked."

Unfortunately, it's named after a Tiger & Bunny character and not based on the Nintendo property. What happened to considering licensing options, Nintendo? Pick it up. You went the entire first year of Luigi without a Luigi's Pizza. Don't make that mistake again in this, the second year of Luigi. How about Donkey Kong sponsor a banana eating contest? Or a Kirby sex toy? Don't make me think of everything.

Is it just me or does the Sonic Boom gameplay in this behind the scenes video actually look better than it did with the initial reveal? And everything is so nice...and colorful. Oh no. No no no. No falling into the Sonic Cycle for me. Booooo. Hisssssss. Sonic is dead.

Anyway, Bob Rafei, Big Red Button CEO/Creative Director, actually specifically talked about all the tape and character redesigns. "For example, the sport tape that I thought was a good example of showing how active the character is, shows how fast these guys are moving," while the neckerchief is an homage to the adventure genre (see: Uncharted 3 for another example).

News::Extensive Diablo III patch 2.0.1 goes live for PC today

This may just be the time to give Diablo III another chance ahead of next month's Reaper of Souls expansion. Patch 2.0.1 hits the PC version today, and it's a huge one.

Many core aspects of the game have been tweaked in some way or altogether redone: experience-boosting Pools of Reflection are in, bosses and classes have been revised, crafting has been streamlined, the difficulty system is now dynamic with monsters leveling up alongside your characters, the loot and paragon systems have been overhauled for the better, clans and communities were added, and the user interface has been tidied up.

Even after that stupidly long-winded overview sentence, I still feel like I'm barely scratching the surface here. You'll want to read Blizzard's full patch notes, linked below. The company anticipates servers going online at 8:00pm Pacific once maintenance is completed.

News::Sony Santa Monica has been hit with layoffs

God of War developer Sony Santa Monica has undergone layoffs as first rumored earlier today and later confirmed by Sony Computer Entertainment America.

"This is a result of a cycle of resource re-alignment against priority growth areas within SCE WWS," reads a statement. "We do not take these decisions lightly. However, sometimes it is necessary to make changes to better serve the future projects of the studio. We have offered outplacement services and severance packages to ease transition for those impacted."

IGN also heard from sources that a project at Sony Santa Monica has been canceled alongside the layoffs, but SCEA did not substantiate this rumor. The studio is said to have an unannounced PlayStation 4 title in development -- hopefully that's not what was canned.

Cinelinx - "The battle is over net neutrality. What net neutrality means is that companies such as Comcast, Verizon, etc cannot charge extra based on the individual, company, or how data is used. Netflix is the biggest supporter of this and has been fighting for consumers rights for a while now."

News::Fez, Starseed Pilgrim, Beatbuddy join Humble Bundle 11

I feel even more confident calling the Humble Indie Bundle 11 one of the group's best offerings to date now that Starseed Pilgrim, Fez, and Beatbuddy have been added. These are available to customers who pay more than the average user-determined price for the bundle.

In short, that's under five bucks for the three newcomers and Guacamelee! Gold Edition, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, The Swapper, Antichamber, and Monaco, plus their soundtracks. All games are PC/Mac/Linux excluding Giana Sisters, which is PC-only.

Starseed in particular is a great addition here. In my mind, it's one of those games that you can't be sure you'll enjoy until you try it for yourself, and I'm not always willing to risk paying full price.
