I've seen many folks go clan-less in Destiny 1, and that was perfectly fine. Bungie didn't really have any incentives to join one, and the system itself wasn't even in-game -- but rather, relegated to the unwieldy Bungie.net website. The site is still pretty much the same, but the entire clan system has been overhauled in the sequel.
If you aren't already in a clan yet, join one, even if it's a stopgap one for now.
