News::Maniac Mansion spiritual successor Thimbleweed Park meets Kickstarter goal

It's happening: the creators of Maniac Mansion are making another 2D point-and-click adventure together. Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick launched a Kickstarter for Thimbleweed Park just last week and with more than $375,000 raised, they've reached their funding goal.

"I am at a loss for words," wrote Gilbert in an update. "The support has been overwhelming and it's making us giddy. Before launching this Kickstarter, Gary and I debated endlessly if people would want a game that felt like it was made in 1987. A game made at the beginning of the golden era of point & click adventures. I think we have our answer. All 10,000+ of them."

The duo has until December 18 to bring in extra funding for "the stretch goals you're asking for the most," which should be doable. Those are: German, Spanish, French, and Italian translations ($425,000); the guy who translated Monkey Island into German will work on Thimbleweed Park ($425,001); iOS and Android versions of the game ($525,000); and full voice acting ($625,000).

Good for them and their fans. I might be an infrequent adventure game player, but it's still uplifting to see an audience form in 2014 to empower these creators to do what they do best.
