Tin Salamunic: Piranha Bytes is a peculiar developer. Their games are typically technically messy and narratively disjointed, but they carry a certain nostalgic allure that makes them difficult to put down. While the Gothic series has received both critical praise and criticism (some even call Gothic 2 the greatest western RPG of all time), Risen gained very few followers since it originally released in 2009. While the first Risen was met with generally favorable scores, the sequel withered away its potential with questionable design decisions and frustrating combat mechanics.
