News:: Oh my gods, Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles looks utterly adorable

Have you ever seen a pitch for a game that's just grabbed you right from the onset? Something that seems like it was catered specifically to your interests, to such an extent where you find yourself desperately hoping that the final product turns out well simply because you're so fond of the promises made by the developers?

This was my reaction when I first checked out the trailer (which you can view below) for Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles by the Brisbane-based studio, Prideful Sloth.

Yonder (not to be confused with Wander) is an open-world adventure game for both the PlayStation 4 and PC that takes place on a large island known as Gemea. This island is separated into eight different locales, each with their own unique aesthetic and wildlife. While it's not been shown in the trailer, I hope that the transitions between each region feels relatively seamless and believable, as I'd hate for the game to feel as if it's simply been cobbled together in a haphazard manner. I find that seamless transitioning between biomes and locales is especially important in an open-world title, as it lends a level of believability to the game's overall environment.

In Yonder, the player will be able to contribute to Gemea and its people by partaking in various activities such as farming, cooking, fishing and even forming relationships with others. Not only that, but they can explore the island in order to both uncover its mysteries and to dispel an evil murk that has begun to plunge its kind-hearted inhabitants into despair.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is whether or not the game will feature any sort of combat system. I wouldn't be surprised if Yonder didn't contain anything of the sort, and even if it does, I doubt it would take up much of the game's focus. Prideful Sloth seems to be very intent on showing off the game's exploration and puzzle-solving aspects, as well as its town-building and social mechanics.

Mind you, I think the biggest take-away from the trailer for Yonder is just how utterly adorable it is. I have a huge weakness for games with a colourful, bright and cartoony aesthetic. This explains why The Wind Waker is unquestionably my favourite entry in the Zelda franchise, and also my sheer adoration for the early Spyro the Dragon games. In fact, the trailer for Yonder does feel somewhat reminiscent of the former of those two games. This really isn’t much of a coincidence, as the likes of Zelda and Harvest Moon have been cited as inspirations for the game.

I really hope that this game turns out well. My rampant lust for cute things must be satiated.

News:: Overwatch Season 3 is live, but there's nothing new yet

Overwatch's third season of competitive play opened up earlier today, and is now available on both consoles and the PC. Participating in competitive play matches allows players to earn points redeemable for golden weapons, and some other bonuses like sprays and player icons.

Blizzard let players know via the Overwatch blog that this season's competitive mode will have a few changes, and that they probably won't start at as high a ranking as they may be accustomed to. The second season of competitive play started out with more people in the Gold and Platinum ranks than were intended, meaning matches containing players in these ranks could be inconsistent. To counter this, Season three will start players at a lower rank, and they should theoretically be able to work their way up to their level, rather than falling for the first few games from wherever the placement matches ranked them.

The blog post made mention of something I hadn't noticed; during the week when competitive play wasn't available, players could still select competitive matches in what Blizzard called the "Off Season." This will allow players who like the format and rules of competitive play to practice without penalty to their ranking during the weeks between seasons.

Surprisingly, none of the changes made on the Public Test Realm have been included yet. Symmetra doesn't have her Photon Barrier or Shield Generator, and the Oasis maps have yet to enter the rotation. Less surprisingly, the Winter Event hinted at by audio files hasn't started yet either. Previous events have lasted for three weeks and ended immediately after the holiday, so I wouldn't expect to see the Winter Event begin for at least a week. It's possible all of these changes will be rolled together in a big patch sometime midway through December.

News:: Don't expect another Battlefield for 'a couple of years'

Battlefield 1 is here to stay for a while, and I wouldn't have it any other way. It has great bones! And, in time, they should grow stronger. I'm loving the WWI setting, far more than I thought I would going in, and that has resulted in a bunch of also-good, also-newly-bought multiplayer shooters staring at me from the shelf. I swear I'll come back to you, Titanfall 2. (Well, after Overwatch's holiday bash.)

Speaking at the Nasdaq 35th Investor Program, Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen commented on the company's release schedule for the series, noting that there won't be "another Battlefield back for a couple of years." Which, frankly, shouldn't come as any surprise. There will be expansions to sell, after all. And if the reception is good (and it is), why rush to move on in this games-as-a-service world?

Instead, 2017 (and presumably 2018 and, oh heck, 2019 as well) will be the year(s) of Star Wars. The "much bigger" sequel to Star Wars Battlefront is coming next year, and it has a lot to prove.

"I think if there was criticism, they just wanted more," Jorgensen said of the original Battlefront, which is closing out soon with its final, Rogue One-inspired expansion pack. "And so we're taking that criticism to heart as we build the next game and trying to address any of the issues that they had."

"The other thing is, we were really working with the old canvas of Star Wars, the old trilogy [...] Next year we'll have the opportunity to leverage more of that content from the new movies and we think that'll make the opportunity much larger."

DICE has no shortage of feedback to work with for the sequel. Here's hoping the game is longer-lasting.

News:: Spider-Man and God of War will be skipping PlayStation Experience this weekend

This weekend is going to be jam-packed with information on upcoming games. With the Video Game Awards (VGAs) happening tomorrow and Sony's PlayStation Experience (PSX) taking up two days (December 3-4), I'm sure a lot of people were expecting to see new footage of Sony's big-budget games for next year. Sadly, that won't be happening.

Both God of War and Insomniac's Spider-Man are going to be absent from either presentation this weekend. While that is a bummer, I suppose it makes sense. If you have nothing more to show off, it is better to stay silent than to make fake footage. We don't need another Colonial Marines on our hands.

As for what we do know about the VGAs, Nintendo is going to be showing off some new footage of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Hideo Kojima will also be holding a panel at PSX for Death Stranding and recent Gears of War inductees Run the Jewels will be performing. Sounds like fun for everyone.

News:: The UK's advertising board rules that No Man's Sky's marketing was not misleading

One of the most common allegations levied toward No Man's Sky in the weeks following its release was that the marketing campaign was misleading. People expected to find vibrant planets full of incredible wildlife. That turned out to be the exception rather than the norm. Instead, people found a lot of emptiness.

The disappointment led 23 people to file complaints to the United Kingdom's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). These complainants asserted that both Valve and Hello Games were guilty of misleading advertising, and that the "game content was not as depicted or described."

The ASA recently posted its ruling based on its investigation into these concerns. Valve was immediately dismissed because third-party developers post all marketing content to the game's page. As for Hello Games, the ASA outlines issue after issue and consistently found that No Man's Sky is clear from any wrongdoing with regard to its pre-release marketing.

All of the points raised such as deceptively engaging environments, different interfaces, and lengthy warping times (read the ruling for the full list) were all deflected by Hello Games. The crux of most individual decisions was either that: it's a functionally-infinite game and the average player will eventually encounter something like the advertising in a normal playthrough; the specific issue wasn't impactful enough to influence a consumer's purchasing decision; or it wasn't materially misleading.

The ASA concluded its findings by stating "We considered that the overall impression of the ad was consistent with gameplay and the footage provided, both in terms of that captured by Hello Games and by third parties, and that it did not exaggerate the expected player experience of the game. We therefore concluded that the ad did not breach the Code."

It seems the misplaced trust comes from the personal expectations so many put on No Man's Sky. A vacuum of concrete details led to people imagining infinite possibilities. There's a lesson to be learned here, although we're probably collectively destined to repeat our mistakes. Those mistakes were predicated on what wasn't said rather than what was shown, at least according to the regulating committee in the United Kingdom.

News:: Ninja Theory bumps Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice to 2017

Was Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice on your radar as something that would realistically make it out in 2016? The thought hadn't crossed my mind in a good long while, so there's my answer. Today, developer Ninja Theory confirmed a 2017 release on PS4 and PC, citing a few reasons for the delay.

As discussed in this developer video, earlier in the year, the team "had a project canceled" and that setback "took some time to sort out." What's more, there was "a rare opportunity to collaborate with Epic Games and others to push performance capture technology forward for the whole video games industry." And lastly, on top of all that, progress on Hellblade hasn't exactly been fast-going.

Ninja Theory doesn't want to rush it, and "compromising on quality is not something [it's] willing to entertain." Since this is an independent project, there's that freedom to take more time as needed. Aside from the release update, there's another behind-the-scenes montage in here. That starts at 1:20.

News:: Ark: Survival Evolved is hitting PS4 sooner than expected

I was under the impression Studio Wildcard couldn't bring Ark: Survival Evolved to PlayStation 4 until the game was further along (it's still in an early-access phase on Steam and Xbox One), but it sounds like its current state is sufficient for Sony. Ark is coming to PS4 on December 6, 2016.

The online dinosaur survival game is launching with the "Ark: Survivor's Pack," a $54.99 bundle that has the core title and its blistering desert expansion Scorched Earth. And a Bionic Giganotosaurus. Can't forget about that! There's a curious note on pricing, too: European players will have the option to buy Ark (€34.99) and the expansion (€19.99) separately. "Unfortunately, we were not able to release the content as two standalone items for the North American regions, until Spring 2017," wrote Wildcard.

PS4 players "will also receive a constant stream of major updates packed with new dinosaurs, weapons, armor, mechanics, and lifestyle improvements, until it releases as a final product in Spring 2017."

I'm willing to make exceptions for unfinished games, but not for this one (though the Monster Factory episode with "Angela Lansbury" almost roped me into an impulsive early purchase).

News:: You don't have to speak Japanese to appreciate this Miitopia trailer

When I was younger and played through the SNES Final Fantasy games, I would always change the name of characters when I could to fulfill my childhood fantasy going on a grand quest with my heroes, like Phil from Rugrats, Bill Nye from Bill Nye the Science Guy, and Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

I was a weird child.

Anyway, I eventually reached an age where I would keep all the names the same, partially because none of these characters looked like the people I was pretending they were, but mostly because I thought the practice was childish. It really wasn't until the advent of the Miis and release of Tomodachi Life that I rediscovered my love of doing this. That game is filled with all of the famous people I admire and Zendaya for some reason. Hopefully next year, I'll be able to take some of my friends and neighbors on a grand adventure in Miitopia

Japanese gamers are just a few days away from its release and Nintendo unleashed a long trailer to drum up interest. I didn't understand a damn thing said in its eight-minute run time, but I like what I see.

News:: Pokemon Sun and Moon is breaking all kinds of Nintendo records

Earlier this morning, Nintendo announced that Pokemon Sun and Moon had an incredibly successful launch in Europe. So successful, in fact, that the 1.5 million units sold was Europe's "biggest launch of a Nintendo game." The prosperity has made its way across the Atlantic, too.

Piggybacking off the Europe story, Nintendo has sent out another press release stating that Pokemon Sun and Moon are also the fastest-selling Nintendo games in the Americas. They sold a combined 3.7 million units since their November 18 release. That's an 85 percent increase over the former record-holder, Pokemon X and Y.

It's a quick start, and one that could probably have been predicted. A certain mobile game has brought the pocket monsters to the forefront of the public consciousness. Some people found themselves with the renewed vigor to play a Pokemon game, and that translated to an immediate boom.

Don't expect it to be a flash in the pan, though; Pokemon titles have long tails, steadily accumulating sales over the years. For instance, X and Y are up to 15.64 million global sales to date. Sun and Moon was always destined for success, mostly by virtue of the series it's a part of. That it's breaking records shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone. What we should keep an eye on is how high it can climb.

News:: With this Dragon Quest VIII story trailer, I can see why the game is so beloved

When it comes to the Dragon Quest franchise, my favorite RPG series, I'm a Johnny-come-lately. I didn't get into it until the DS era when I picked up and subsequently fell head over heels for Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime. That was the gateway drug that got me hooked. Since then, I've bought just about every game in the series that's been released on western shores.

Because of my tardiness to the Puff-Puff party, I've missed out on some of the best games in the franchise, so I've been told. Right now, I'm about halfway done with Dragon Quest VII on the 3DS and loving every moment of it. Next year, I'll finally get my chance to play what's been called by countless people is the best game in the series, Dragon Quest VIII. After seeing this 3DS story trailer, I can already tell I'm going to love it.

News:: Cyber Week deals on Alienware, Razer, HP, and Lenovo laptops

If you're doing last-minute shopping because you were too hungover overcome with food coma during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday chaos, the good news is deals are still a go with Cyber Week.

We've rounded up some decent laptop deals for latecomers, from premium (and pricey) Alienware and Razer laptops to the more affordable variants from HP and Lenovo. The cheapest gaming-capable rig below would be the HP Pavilion 17 pricing in at only $580 after coupon and instant savings. That's a Quad-Core i5 with a GTX 960M for under $600. Also available is the Pavilion 15 with a GTX 950M for $550. We'd go with the 960M but if you rather run with a 15-inch laptop, this is a good choice too.

A pricier alternative, of course, is the Alienware 15 below with a GTX 970M and 4K display (you're not going to do much 4K gaming TBH), coming in at $1,500. Most deals below will run through December 3, but if you spot anything that's expired let us know so we can update accordingly.

News:: Rainbow Six Siege Year Two pass is now available

After some rumors and a confirmation, it looks like Ubisoft is ready to kick off Year Two for Rainbow Six Siege. The game must be doing well for the big U if it isn't drastically trying to figure out a sequel. I love that we're getting more content to a game that fans enjoy; this is what I've wanted from an all-digital future for gaming.

As for what is actually coming, players can look forward to eight new operators (across four different seasons), eight new headgear and uniform customization options, a carbon charm (whatever the hell that is), and some credits to purchase in-game stuff (how thoughtful).

You can also opt to get the VIP membership, which allows early access to all content, a 10% discount on any in-game purchases, a five percent boost to renown (basically XP), and a couple of extra daily challenges. You could also just play the game and unlock all of this stuff for free, but that is the joy of Siege; options are available.

News:: 'Halo 5' is getting an eSports reality TV show

Microsoft really wants to make a big deal out of competitive Halo 5 gaming, and it's taking an unusual route to get there. The company's 343 Industries and Electronic Sports League have reached a deal with Pilgrim Media Group to create an eSports-focused reality TV series. Details of what it involves are scarce, but it will bring the "intensity and extreme competition" of Halo 5 to the TV, whatever that might mean. There's no mention of a planned air date or even distributors, so it's unclear when you'll have a chance to watch. It's safe to say that Microsoft will find some way to make the series available to Xbox One owners, though.

News:: EA and Ubisoft claim they're all in on the Switch: But will it last?

In the past six months we've been seeing a lot of praise coming out of Ubisoft's corner for the Nintendo Switch, and it's a whole lot of déjà vu.

When the Wii U launched, they pranced on stage at multiple trade shows talking about how it would be the "next big thing," and before you know it, they wouldn't even release DLC for planned games before the well completely dried up and they left town for good. EA did the same thing. Remember Mass Effect on Wii U? I remember, but not many others do, because the publisher abandoned the console very quickly.

It seems like every few weeks Ubisoft is praising the Switch, and now EA is joining in. At the Credit Suisse 2016 Annual Technology Conference, EA CEO Peter Moore re-confirmed its "major" Switch release, and goes on to talk about how important Nintendo is:

"Nintendo has always been and will always be an very important partner in this industry. They have some of the best first party development studios in the world, and some of the most valuable intellectual properties in the world. We have announced publicly that we got a partnership with them on their new platform, the Switch, we haven’t talked in detail on what’s that about. You can imagine, as you heard, that a major game will be distributed on that platform. We’re huge fans. We have a relationship that goes many decades back. They’ve had some difficult times as if recently obviously, but never, ever, ever discount Nintendo in this marketplace, and their ability to leverage their superb game development opportunities. Their intellectual properties, whether it’s Mario, whether it’s Zelda, whether it’s Metroid Prime, we could go on forever about what they can do… obviously Pokémon, we’ve seen more recently."

That sounds all well and good, but will they be there in a year if it doesn't sell Wii [OG] numbers out of the gate? We'll see. Between the utter destruction of third parties on Wii U and Sony's mercy killing of the Vita by their own hand, it's been a weird generation.

News:: Ubisoft ends its free game giveaway with a whimper

Ubisoft has been going all in for the celebration of its 30th anniversary. For the past six months, it has given out some pretty excellent titles from the history of the studio. Sadly, the final month of the year won't be anything noteworthy, as instead of gifting out a decent game in the series, Ubisoft is opting for Assassin's Creed III.

I can sort of understand why some people might dig this one. The setting is quite well realized and the beginning of the game is actually pretty cool. I love that you start off as a Templar (without realizing it) and the story does a lot to try and blur the lines between good and evil, instead of painting everything as black and white. Still, the general gameplay, the tired scenarios, and the lack of polish hurt this title.

I also can't get around the "Forrest Gump"-style feeling the narrative evokes. I know this is supposed to be historical fiction, but I take so many issues with Paul Revere becoming a glorified GPS. I also can't stand how Connor is present at the signing of the Declaration of Independence, since that is just plain stupid. At least the series rebounded with Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

You will be able to grab this game through Uplay on December 7. Don't even bother trying the multiplayer on PC as not a single soul is playing it. I trudged through this game two years ago and I couldn't even pretend to get into the multiplayer. Maybe this promotion will increase the player population.

Also, do yourself a favor and ignore the DLC. It is completely worthless.
