When you ask someone to describe the typical mmorpg, you'll normally get a description that strongly resembles games like World of Warcraft. Push a little deeper, and you might get a response that brings up moba games, such as League of Legends, or a card-based game like Hearthstone. Yet lurking in the shadowy recesses of the internet where few glance at, and even fewer dare to venture, there is another form on mmo gaming that has quietly taken root over the years: ARG mmos or, as they're better known, alternate reality games. This breed of online gaming is markedly different from the standard mmo, which is part of the appeal.
