Microsoft’s former head of Interactive Entertainment had been angling for social and mobile game titan Zynga to become part of the Xbox family before he left to become CEO at the company under a wave of speculation and scrutiny last month.
As confirmed by sources to Bloomberg, Don Mattrick had sought to bolster the Xbox brand’s social game portfolio by acquiring all or part of Zynga in 2010 when discussions began between Mattrick and Zynga founder Mark Pincus.
Though Zynga’s market dominance has floundered in the past few years and – according to Bloomberg’s sources – the negotiations fell through, Mattrick’s interest in the company clearly never waned as he’s set to succeed Pincus with a rather attractive deal that was detailed in all in its financial glory last week.
