News::GDC 2013: Kojima announces Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has shown off gameplay footage of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which he also revealed the earlier footage of Ground Zeroes was part of.

The Phantom Pain will be an open world game, but the new footage is taken from the opening tutorial section which Kojima describes as being, “more on rails”.

Opening in a hospital, it transpires that Snake has been in a coma for nine years, and as a result has lost the use of his legs temporarily.

A fellow patient, who’s voice actor sound suspiciously like Kiefer Sutherland, helps you to escape the hospital as an unknown enemy attacks it. Snake’s movement is laboured, and the Fox Engine pulls off some wonderfully naturalistic animation. Characters’ faces, too, look excellent.

At first, the enemy only seems to be military, but in fine Metal Gear fashion, things soon take a turn for the supernatural as a floating child ascends through the ceiling and a burning man exits an elevator and approaches the player amid an inferno.

A trailer shown just before showed all manner of theatrical bombast, too, within which flaming horses, helicopters, cigars and motorbikes abound.

You can see the first images of the section in motion in our gallery – it’s all taken from gameplay and running on a PC. Full trailer below:
